techdevangelist··on My Resignation from the Intercept
Add in they paid $85 for data recovery on 3 water logged Apple laptops... I’ve paid for data recovery services on drives, it’s a lot more than 85 bucks...
techdevangelist··on Spotify revises TOS to allow transfers of user-created playlists
On the desktop client you can select all songs on a playlist, right click and add to a new playlist. This new lis shows up as able to be transferred with SongShift. I did it last night as a PoC, I’ve done it it previously to customize some Spotify playlists here and there and will be my method going forward to keep lists in sync between services now. Just in case they try to pull access again.
techdevangelist··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
I’ve got Crohn’s so I’ve had my share of colonoscopies, completely agree that the procedure is a breeze. And now that propofol is the standard it’s that much better, the older versed/morphine combo really hammered you. The prep is the worst bit and it’s better if you prep well for the prep; wet wipes, bidet, water bottle anything, some good reading material and a good even free from other disruptions (you’ll be disrupted enough...)
techdevangelist··on GardaWorld lost track of millions
Yes, stalling auditors and engaging in a coverup to hide information from auditors tends to draw some harsh findings. It’s 9M that’s known to be missing, it could be much larger (or smaller). But generally deceiving your customers isn’t the best way to keep them coming back.
techdevangelist··on Six months in, N95 mask shortages persist
We have the flat folded KN95 masks in Kroger costing 3 for $15
techdevangelist··on JDK 15
Lucky! We still have a mix of 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8; our recent big upgrade came from moving a few apps from 1.6 to 1.8... we’ll get to this jdk in about 15 years.
techdevangelist··on Theranos’ Holmes May Pursue ‘Mental Disease’ in Her Defense
That’s a similar response to accounting personal who worked for Arthur Anderson, the one I know personally leaves a hole in his resume during the tenure and would explain it if asked. He said it was a pretty common tactic, even for those that had no roll with Enron.
techdevangelist··on How to take back control of /etc/resolv.conf on Linux (2018)
It can be worth trying to set the file to immutable; chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf
techdevangelist··on SoftBank unmasked as ‘Nasdaq whale’ that stoked tech rally
I think it’s interesting it popped 24 hours prior to this story, like reporters reaching out for comment triggered a change of strategy. Pure speculation of course, the holiday weekend tends to cause sell offs as well.
techdevangelist··on Amazon deletes job listings for analysts to track ‘labor organizing threats’
Or maybe they found their candidates based on the free publicity around the posting..
techdevangelist··on Lego IKEA Bygglek – First Look
My new IDÅSEN powered stand up desk is quite sturdy, albeit with a considerable premium from ikea is fantastic. Since I’ll be WFH for awhile I thought it worthwhile.
techdevangelist··on Shippos USPS Time in Transit Data
And I saw someone else’s note about it being redlivered by an individual; we use locked boxes here that the mail carrier has a master key to the back, they are the only one getting in easily.
techdevangelist··on Shippos USPS Time in Transit Data
I’ve consistently seems this exact behavior on every package delivered by usps lately. It shows up typically the next day but twice it took multiple days to find its way to my mailbox.
techdevangelist··on Windows 10: HOSTS file blocking telemetry is now flagged as a risk
The target demo of those buying licenses wouldn’t be building workstations, they are buying prebuilt whatever and upgrading the entitlements from there.

MS very explicitly doesn’t target these releases to consumers, it’s entirely possible to do it by adding the 4 x useless products to get over the 5 x volume requirement. It’s sad, but not shocking they didn’t cover the edge case of a custom builder. If you were a firm building machines, you’d again get a special setup and do provisioning and key burning into bios etc.

techdevangelist··on One-Third of U.S. Museums May Not Survive the Year, Survey Finds
And those enhanced unemployment benefits expire next week, so far the Senate and White House are wanting them ‘means tested’, so it looks like they may fall off without renewal.
techdevangelist··on British Airways announces immediate retirement of 747 fleet
I suspect some may be sold to freight lines for conversion but many will end up in aircraft boneyards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_boneyard
techdevangelist··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
That’s close to my theory as well, Googlebot is almost universally allowed, building the index happened at the right time to become to big to block. Trying to deep crawl to Google’s level may be impossible now, and maybe one way to encourage innovation in search/discovery is to force the raw crawl results for others to parse & rank.
techdevangelist··on Swamped bankruptcy courts threaten US recovery
Googling the url of the story is typically a god way around most paywalls, in this case the story seems available over amp:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/14b07c0e-95e...

techdevangelist··on LabCorp’s at-home Covid-19 test kit is the first to be authorized by the FDA
What is the expectation people will actually get the swab far enough back to collect a meaningful sample? Having been on the receiving end of a nasal collected flu test, it was a pretty deep probing. I’m kind of doubtful most people can do it to themself properly without some prompting to ‘go deeper’.
techdevangelist··on COBOL programmers answer call
Ah MicroFocus where enterprise products go to die a very slow drawn out death
techdevangelist··on US weekly jobless claims jump by 6.6M
I don’t think any states are paying that extra 600/week out yet, where I’m at they are still recoding for it and expecting several more weeks. It’ll be back dated but still, and with the numbers of claims I’m wondering how much capital they really have for it.

techdevangelist··on Federal Reserve pledges asset purchases with no limit to support markets
And somehow the Dow opened lower still, it’s like lighting an unlimited pile of money on fire does nothing good, almost like there is a health crisis instead of a monetary one..
techdevangelist··on Apple CarPlay, Android Auto distract drivers more than pot, alcohol, says study
Have you tried a charge only cable that lacks the data pins being hooked up?
techdevangelist··on We're making an open-source $30 GPS/mesh radio, would like advice
Just picked two up as well, looking forward to playing with this project!
techdevangelist··on 30-year U.S. bond yields less than S&P dividend rate
Assuming we’re at the bottom, with the virus concerns, plus the much earlier bond yield inversions we could be always from bottom.
techdevangelist··on Adobe Summit Cancelled
If you are a large event, the hope is they purchased a policy for show stoppage events and it covers public health events like this. It won’t make you completely whole but should limit losses on contract commitments to venues, hotels, f&b, etc.
techdevangelist··on A two-person startup already uses twenty-eight other tools
I think your plan has to support the outbound calling, our Corp issued plans do but the random 3rd zoom bridge I join doesn’t always have the call me option. It may be free tier vs paid; but has bit me right before trying to jump on and having to dial in manually.
techdevangelist··on Mozilla’s DNS over HTTPs
I wonder if we’ll start to see Comcast and other large snooping ISPs start to filter the resolution of this domain in the name of stability...
