tdrgabi··on I set a trap for a book-marketing scammer (2025)
Because he decided to write an investigation article and wanted to see what would happen.

I don't think he replies to all spam emails.

tdrgabi··on The Religion of Speed
Sorry if it sounded like I was picking on your story, that wasn't my intention.

I was just thinking out loud. You hear stories of "do 100, it beats doing 1" and "plan well and do 1, it beats doing 100", in the end... you sort of chose the stories that agree with you.

tdrgabi··on Unraveling the mysteries of habit formation
Could you share a link to the interview?
tdrgabi··on The Religion of Speed
There are anecdotes supporting almost any point.

We've all heard about the "make 100 clay pots", or, sometimes it's photos group vs "make 1 perfect clay pot" group.

tdrgabi··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
I am building a solitaire solver for Zachtronic Solitaire. Especially the last one. It should allow you to take a pic of the screen and tell you if it's solvable and what the next moves could be.
tdrgabi··on Show HN: I reverse-engineered the world maps of Test Drive III (1990 DOS game)
Carmageddon would be what a kid could ask
tdrgabi··on The Gervais Principle, or the Office According to "The Office" (2009)
What other books did you find in that style?
tdrgabi··on What happens when an octopus engages with art?
Imagine being taken from your environment, maybe on a spaceship and get to see, among other things, a human market, where parts of humans are sold.

I'm sure that octopus has a UFO kidnaping story.

tdrgabi··on The year of peak might and magic
Not exactly what you asked for but https://store.steampowered.com/app/867210/Songs_of_Conquest/ is somewhat close.

I played the campaign and it scratched the itch

tdrgabi··on Just How Many More Successful UBI Trials Do We Need?
I'm sorry if this has been answered many times in the past. I didn't find the answer anywhere else.

If everyone gets 1000$ extra, why wouldn't rent increase by close to 1000$. If you're not willing to pay it, someone will. I don't understand how giving all of us X amount of dollars would help. The number of goods are the same, they would become more expensive through inflation.

tdrgabi··on Dragonsweeper — A minesweeper game that requires observation
If you liked this, there's a game on steam: "Desktop dungeons". It's a more refined version and more puzzles, character classes etc https://store.steampowered.com/app/226620/Desktop_Dungeons/
tdrgabi··on The joy of reading books you don't understand
Probably "The spy who came in from the cold"
tdrgabi··on Was Atlantis a Minoan Civilization on Santorini Island?
I liked the JRE episode with Jimmy Corsetti. He thinks he found the traces of Atlantis in west Africa.

It was an entertaining episode to listen to, not being a scholar, it's hard to know if he's right or not.

Here's a clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_R1zoY9kWs

tdrgabi··on What is Glamorous Toolkit v1.0?
I had the same problem as you.

My current understanding is that it's similar to Emacs, but in this case it uses Smalltalk instead of Elisp.

It's an IDE who's selling point is that you should extend while coding.

If my day job uses Python, for example, is it pragmatic to use Glamorous Toolkit? Yes, it has a few functions for editing code in some language .. but you get a lot more Python power from Intellij or Pycharm. I don't use Smalltalk but if I were, I would consider it, alongside Pharo or instead of Pharo.

tdrgabi··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
I don't have tinnitus, so I can't verify, but I stumbled a long time ago across this reddit thread https://np.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/3l3uri/these_guys_light...

The url looks weird, I'm not talking about the video but the comment this links to.

It looks like ... his method makes it stop for 10-15minutes, so it's not permanent.

tdrgabi··on A self-driving Uber killed a woman. The backup driver pleaded guilty
Police have released the video https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2018/03/2...

I'm not sure I could have avoided her, if I was the driver and paid full attention. She came out of the dark so fast, in the middle of the lane.

tdrgabi··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
But they "didn't know how it worked", DNA was not discovered yet
tdrgabi··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
What resources can you recommend to learn how to advocate strongly in this context?
tdrgabi··on DuckDuckGo’s building AI-generated answers into its search engine
I see your point, but is it much different than googling and getting a site in the result with wrong information or advice?
tdrgabi··on Up (Film Series)
I was trying to reply to the Everyone part in:

If society can't make everyone happy, what's the point.

tdrgabi··on Up (Film Series)
Make most of the people's life better.

Everyone is an impossible target.

Maybe make the life better for more than the alternatives

tdrgabi··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
It's probably trying to avoid the opening of many accounts, all under 25$, as an attempt to transfer a lot of money but still fly under the AML radar
tdrgabi··on Why are developers expected to estimate tasks at all?
I do wonder if developers would accept the same from people they "employ" to do a task.

I imagine sometimes I renovate my kitchen, an expensive task, within my budget but with not a lot of leeway, I can't renovate the kitchen twice for example. If the workers say they don't know how long it will cost and they won't provide an estimate to when ... I would not be happy.

Even creatives, writers, musicians, graphic artists have deadlines and must estimate their work.

But we feel that our work is special and should not be asked to give an estimate.

tdrgabi··on Sex worker-led payment platform shuts down after being cut off by processor
"Crypto payment processor SpankPay announced on Monday that it would shut down because of financial discrimination"

They were using crypto. Didn't help.

tdrgabi··on You just gotta tell a good story
I'm not sure if you are sarcastically referencing online recipes nowadays, or are serious...
tdrgabi··on Ask HN: Which courses (online or not) have had the greatest impact on you?
What impact did it have on you. How did you change afterwards?
tdrgabi··on Show HN: ELI5 Powered by GPT-3
For a 5 year old that's not worse than what parents say
tdrgabi··on Worst-Case Scenario (2017)
I was referring to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_submarine_B-59
tdrgabi··on Worst-Case Scenario (2017)
There was a moment where a russian sub was depth charged by us destroyers. The subs captain decided that ww3 has started and ordered a nuclear torpedo to be fired.

On board they also had a higher ranking officer which overruled it. That was a close call.

tdrgabi··on No Start Menu for You
In my experience, each time a firewall is blocking a connection, you experience it as a timeout, so the app tries to connect and finally times out.

Which would take longer. I haven't tried though
