tchbnl··on NASA reconnected with Voyager 1 after a brief pause
I don't think you can blame a bot for a mentally unstable kid and neglectful parents.
tchbnl··on Turkey blocks instant messaging platform Discord
Yes, Erdogan has really dragged Turkey back. It picked up after that "coup" attempt that he used to arrest anybody who disagreed with him, be it soldiers or even judges.

It's so sad to see Turkey turn out like this, but there's nobody that can do anything except their own citizens.

It was a skeleton crew of H-1Bs being held hostage in a building that Musk was refusing to pay rent for.
tchbnl··on Moom 4: Next-generation window manager
Long time and very happy Moom user. Instantly bought a new license for Moom 4.
tchbnl··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum
You're right, Ireland doesn't deserve that trash fire.

tchbnl··on Russia behind fake news bot campaign to empower French far right
I'd call their interference something a bit more serious than trolling.
tchbnl··on Cloudflare blocking my IP (2023)
I think this highlights the problem with so much of the Internet being hosted behind a single provider that has the reachability of a porcupine.
tchbnl··on SUSE Offers Lifeline to Stranded CentOS Users with Liberty Linux Lite
Ignoring that I've never heard of this site, this "news" article is just a straight up ad. Might as well find a direct link from SUSE at this point.
tchbnl··on Voyager 1 is back online: NASA spacecraft returns data from all 4 instruments
Or it was specced and engineered for a long life in the harshness of outer space. You can't compare it to a 1950s fridge.
tchbnl··on As private equity dominates wheelchair market, users wait months for repairs
PE is such a cancer
tchbnl··on North Korean animation outsourcing for Amazon, HBO Max series
And of course here's the "AI solves everything" comment.
tchbnl··on North Korean animation outsourcing for Amazon, HBO Max series
The issue is the money is piped into the NK regime. The problem isn't that a North Korean did the work, but that it was done by a state-owned firm.
tchbnl··on Drone footage of fledging penguins jumping off cliff
Fear not, no penguins were harmed in the making of this film.
tchbnl··on macOS Sonoma 14.4 might break Java on your machine
Apple doesn't EOL the last OS version when the latest comes out. I think they mean they wait a few months to make sure all the issues have been worked out.
tchbnl··on The BeOS Bible (1999)
Ah man the nostalgia. I still read through mine sometimes.
tchbnl··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
With how much of a shitshow this was, I'm not sure Anthropic wants to touch that mess. Wish I was a fly on the wall when the board tried to ask the Anthropic CEO to come back/merge.
tchbnl··on Oink's Pink Palace
Not everything is on Spotify, though. I have a lot of CDs I've had to look for second-hand because they're not on any streaming services or digital stores, and long out of print. I'd probably been able to find a lot of them on OiNK or What.CD and nowhere else online.

It's difficult and expensive sometimes, and it also feels wrong not to be able to share them with others.

tchbnl··on Cloudflare mitigated yet another Okta compromise
This is the _second_ time this has happened, and it's clear Octa hasn't learned any lessons. So Cloudflare is right to call them out, and Okta should be embarrassed. What surprised me about this post is that they didn't say they were dropping them. Okta is a vulnerability to any organization.
tchbnl··on Bandcamp's Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off
Yes. They acquired the company for no logical reason, did nothing with it, and then dumped it rather than spin it out because they don't care and want their money back.

Epic ruined it.

tchbnl··on Apple plans to update iPhones in-store without opening the boxes
I don't think the issue is half-baked software. It's the idea that you buy a phone six months out from the last major release, open it up, and boom, it's charged and even has the latest update already installed. No irksome red dot on the Settings app icon. It's a little more "magic" to wow the customer.
tchbnl··on Opera's browser is now available with chess baked in
Adding to that, the acquired company isn't even the original Opera Software. They divested of their browser, sold it to a Chinese consortium, and changed their name to Otello to focus on their ad business.

The new Opera likes to promote their Norwegian roots everywhere, but it is very much a Chinese business with an overseas office.

tchbnl··on Vaxbarn
I imagine most people talking about old VAX machines don't care about SEO. And I doubt there were ever any relevant top hits for "Can I see a VAX in a museum?" on reddit since day one.

But none of that matters, because if you wanted to ask or search for that, you would do it in one of the relevant subreddits. And if I search for "vax computer" on Google I get plenty of good results on the first page.

You're making this into more of an issue than it is.

tchbnl··on The Federal Helium reserve is for sale
Ah, because who cares about the people who come after. That's their problem.
tchbnl··on X plans to collect biometric data, job and school history
Tastes like garbage, though.
tchbnl··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
I do think the Internet peaked in the early 2000s. Things started to take a downward turn as social networks like Facebook and Twitter really took off and simple recommendations started being replaced by algorithms and endless scrolling to encourage nonstop consumption. The limited hardware and network speeds prevented some of that from being possible.

We're definitely overconnected these days. I think it'd be a net positive for humanity if the centralized social networks and mega services died.

tchbnl··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
Windows 7 really was the last good Windows release. After that we got the hideous Metro redesign, then all the telemetry and shoving of Edge etc. down our throats.
tchbnl··on Kagi Search Stats
One of the best features of Kagi. Getting rid of all the Pinterest spam instantly made searches so much better.
tchbnl··on Kagi Number of Users and Searches Stats
I'd imagine that's because it's the weekend and most queries are related to work.
