tcfunk··on Windows 11 Pro will soon require a Microsoft Account during initial setup
but the adobes
tcfunk··on Goodbye CSS Modules, Hello TailwindCSS
I've been using tailwind in combination with styled components, so that I can easily capture repeated sets of classes. Something like:

  const PostImage = styled(Img).attrs({
    className: `
      duration-100
      transform
      transition-transform
      ease-in
      hover:scale-110
    `
  })``
tcfunk··on Amazon Is Lobbying the US Government to Make Pot Legal
> "We've found that eliminating pre-employment testing for cannabis allows us to expand our applicant pool," Amazon senior VP of human resources Beth Galetti said.

As soon as I read that headline I figured this had at least something to do with it.

tcfunk··on Many of the clothes we donate to charity end up dumped in landfill
I'd be curious to know if it is helpful or hurtful for me (as someone who can afford to buy "new" cloths) to shop at secondhand clothing stores.

Am I preventing clothes from getting shipped out to Africa, or preventing someone of less means from finding something to wear? Or a bit of both?

tcfunk··on Firefox 89 Tab Appearance
I think the purple theme is pretty so I enabled it.
tcfunk··on You Don't Need a GUI
All well and good until you try one of these commands only to be told you don't have permission. Uh oh, now you're down the rabbit hole when all you really wanted to do was copy a file :)
tcfunk··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
I've just started using ZBrush recently, and one of my favorite ideas in this software is their timeline scrubber. You can just drag through undo/redo history to get back to the point in time that you want very quickly.

I could see this being similarly useful in code.

tcfunk··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
Eye-opener for me that I really need to set up a fallback email address
tcfunk··on Being Bored Is Good
> Meanwhile I'm able to write about game ideas, code them, create some characters and story and background, even though it doesn't lead to anything since it's more of a hobby, but I fail to make it into a job.

I am feeling sort of stuck in a loop with this, and constantly feel like a failure about it. Part of me thinks I should give up on the idea altogether and I would just be a happier person. But I don't know if I could do that if I were being completely honest with myself. Not that this helps you, just putting it out there :)

tcfunk··on Minimum Wage Still Can’t Pay For A Two-Bedroom Apartment Anywhere
That's all well and good if 16 year olds are the only ones making minimum wage.

And if their parents haven't kicked them out of the house already because they got pregnant too early.

Or have a sexual orientation that their parents don't agree with.

Or..

tcfunk··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
Does it? I can locate and adjust a knob without ever taking my eyes off the road. The same can't be said for a touchscreen.
tcfunk··on Pyramid Tracks: Obscure, retro, and weird royalty free music
I had the same thought :) The track "Driven" by "Blue Crystal Star" stood out to me in that regard.
tcfunk··on Always Own Your Platform
If you ask me, we're already past the point of this being effective.

Coming from the perspective of creating and selling a PC game, do you really think you can be successful by posting it up on your website with a Stripe checkout button? (Actually you shouldn't even be using Stripe, but I digress). If you do, you're fooling yourself.

I think the same could be extended to a number of industries, e.g crafts that are sold on Pinterest/Etsy. To get back to where we were will require a complete overhaul of the entire system. Until then, we are beholden to our advertising masters.

I actually don't think it's all bad, though. 15 years ago, you didn't have nearly the options available to you to make money that you do now.

tcfunk··on “Apps intended for kids may not include third-party advertising or analytics”
Yeah I actually stopped allowing YouTube and YouTube Kids. YouTube has inappropriate ads, and YouTube Kids content is basically half ads in disguise (just people advertising toys and how they work).
tcfunk··on Roundup’s Risks Could Go Well Beyond Cancer
Sort of a tangent here, but I find very often in the workplace that my managers want me to tell them about how I "know" something will work. I never know if something will work. I can only be mostly sure that it will. It goes against my nature so much to respond to these questions the way that they want.
tcfunk··on Brush your teeth – postpone Alzheimer's
I don't think I follow. I believe we have the science to prove that having food stuck between your teeth is worse than not having food stuck between your teeth.
tcfunk··on The Weird World of Larval Fish (2016)
OT, but their favicon is awesome
tcfunk··on Sony and Microsoft set rivalry aside for cloud gaming alliance
Would be comical if Sony still claimed that they can't allow crossplay.
tcfunk··on Facebook is redesigning its core app
I know at least 4 people who are very interested in pictures of my kids ;)
tcfunk··on New version of Stripe Checkout
I think PayPal might be the Kleenex of online payment providers
tcfunk··on Buy Yourself a Latte
> The latte scare is a great way to make sure people who are apprehensive about investing never even consider it.

It's like fad dieting, but for your wallet.

tcfunk··on Easy to Remember Color Guide for Non-Designers
Something that would help me is an example implementation based on color palette selections. I'm am expert at selecting colors I like :) But I don't necessarily know how to apply color palettes to the elements of a site. What should be primary, secondary, etc?
tcfunk··on Electron is flash for the desktop (2016)
I've also found (anecdotally) that the resource usage between a browser tab an the same electron app has been inconsequential.
tcfunk··on I'm leaving GitLab to help everyone work remotely
Probably a personal issue, but I can count on zero hands the number of friends I've made in the workplace.
tcfunk··on Unity Engine ToS change makes cloud-based SpatialOS games illegal
Re-distributing was the wrong word to use. But it seems to me that the Unity Runtime is a part of the stack of their SaaS.
tcfunk··on Unity Engine ToS change makes cloud-based SpatialOS games illegal
I'm not so sure. Maybe I am misunderstanding but the terms prohibit the "use [of] a managed service running on cloud infrastructure...to install or execute the Unity Runtime on the cloud or a remote server".

Which leads me to believe they are installing or running the Unity Runtime on their servers? If not I'd love a better explanation :)

tcfunk··on Unity Engine ToS change makes cloud-based SpatialOS games illegal
I feel like people are missing the mark here, complaining about commercial game engines.

SpatialOS was basically re-distributing Unity under a SaaS model. Unity is in the right here.

Edit: Have heard some pretty good points about the ambiguous wording of the ToS (such as theoretically making the distribution of a Unity-made game through a storefront illegal). It will be interesting to see if this ToS change sticks.

tcfunk··on Plane drops to 928 feet after autopilot set to 0 altitude
Despite the fix suggested, what you'd actually feel is acceleration, rather than velocity. 500ft descent over 18 seconds would be about -1.2ft/s acceleration.
tcfunk··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
Yes! I am constantly holding down the escape key without realizing it. Not a problem very often but occasionally causes some really confusing things to happen.
tcfunk··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
I would phrase it more like "Yay it has made improvements without compromises"
