tbm57··on How to build quickly
I'm not as much of an overhead strategist, but I do have a rule that I follow that matches this article: if I hesitate to start working on a problem because it seems too difficult, it's because that problem has not yet been broken into small enough parts.
tbm57··on Why doesn't advice work?
One of the most frustrating things in life is dealing with someone who says one thing, but really feels a different way (this is obvious after writing it down). Consider someone who is asking for advice for a problem that they don't really want to solve. i.e. somebody is overweight, but they don't really want to change anything about their lifestyle to lose weight. They value the food they eat and their activities more than any consequences they might bring. So, any advice given to them on losing weight would be dead on arrival - but the receiver would never admit that.
tbm57··on "We ran out of columns"
Working on something like that would drive me absolutely batty. I am happy you were able to find your zen in the middle of that chaos. This post truly speaks to the human condition
tbm57··on Why privacy is important, and having "nothing to hide" is irrelevant (2016)
So, suggestions on how to combat this?
tbm57··on Learn CSS Grid with a virtual garden game
i thought this was excellent. very engaging way to quickly learn a useful tool
tbm57··on Old dogs, new CSS tricks
don't call me a monkey for not using a tool that I don't need, thank you!
tbm57··on Humanity's remaining timeline? It looks more like five years than 50
> I have set out to meet and talk to a small but growing band of luddites, doomsayers, disruptors and other AI-era sceptics who see only the bad in the way our spyware-steeped, infinitely doomscrolling world is tending.

I would say at this point that it's harder to see the good?

tbm57··on Ask HN: What lessons in life do tech people learn too late?
but you'll probably need to sell your soul for just a little while to learn what it takes to run a business
tbm57··on Sora: Creating video from text
Does it matter to you whether you're interacting with a human on some level when watching a show or movie, specifically on an artistry level?

Maybe some movie you've watched has been spun up by a Sora-like platform based on a prompt that itself was AI-generated from a market research report. Stephen King said that horror is the feeling of walking into your house and finding that all of your furniture has been replaced by identical copies - finding out that all of the media everybody consumes has actually been generated by non-human entities would give me the same feeling

tbm57··on Sora: Creating video from text
not to add to the doomerism, but I often wonder about how much AI-generated content I've consumed without realizing it - especially from times before generative AI became mainstream
tbm57··on Super Mario 64 on the Web
i'm impressed with the performance! this laptop struggles with simple games in steam, but had no problem with this at all
tbm57··on Variable Variables
this looks like this is specific to PHP? does this imply the existence of variable variable variables?
tbm57··on Every time you drive, you use gas
I'm in a discord with him
tbm57··on Why I didn't play this harpsichord sooner
so is he keeping the harpsichord at his church? seems like a great way to: attend service, play in public, and share it with others

enjoyed the article!

tbm57··on Every time you drive, you use gas
the wise man says: to summarize is to reduce your words, but keep your meaning. However, there is meaning in everything: therefore everything is a summary
tbm57··on Thomas Cochrane
love that he helps win the war against napoleon only to try to break him out of exile a few years later
tbm57··on Light No Fire – A Fantasy Game from the Makers of No Man's Sky
I hope the launch for this one goes better than last time! They had to spend like a decade repairing their reputation to get to this point again
tbm57··on Show HN: Open-source alternatives to tools You pay for
I think compiling lists of open source tools is always a nice idea, but there's some parts of this site that are a little confusing for me. What would be the open source alternative for PHP, for example, which is already open source? In general, I think it's rare that someone would be looking for an open source alternative for any programming language

I think the list of tools is valuable, it's just that it's in need of a different organization here

tbm57··on You are never taught how to build quality software
> To be realistic, it's important to not over-engineer QA measures with a big upfront investment. We shouldn't block progress of the project as a whole and neither will we get the necessary buy-in from all stakeholders with this approach.

I suspect that a lot of the bad code that is out there exists because teams are constantly in crunch time where it is important to get certain features out by a deadline.

From that perspective, this statement is kind of a contradiction. If every minute is vital to finishing a feature on time, then the act of writing tests will always block progress of the project

Basically, I just wish it were more innately profitable to write quality software

tbm57··on The Onyx Programming Language
The most interesting part of this language to me is that it's streamlined for WASM compilation, and I think that should be put up front more than it is
tbm57··on Conway's Game of Life is omniperiodic
I might be misunderstanding what they accomplished here - doesn't this mean that oscillators needed to be found for all prime number periods?

for me, random coincidence that this popped up today, I just published a little holiday-themed GoL variant last week here: https://52games52weeks.com/gameofchristmas

tbm57··on TBM's Game of Christmas
Alright - thanks for letting me know! I will take a look at this
tbm57··on TBM's Game of Christmas
The first entry in my mission to make 52 small games in a year. A holiday variation on Conway's Game of Life
tbm57··on A chess TUI implementation
this is the most performant chess TUI implementation I've ever used
tbm57··on Playstation is erasing seasons of Discovery shows from customer libraries
it seems like console manufacturers could just add a software update that prevents users from playing certain pieces of purchased physical media? the 'always online' paradigm is just as annoying as digital/physical ownership here
tbm57··on A Light in the Woods
Very nicely designed and well executed. thanks for sharing
tbm57··on A very subtle bug (2010)
this is clearly fixed by popen starting a docker container for the subprocess to run in
tbm57··on Who invented file extensions in file names?
fewer letters saves valuable developer time

typical java, prioritizing verbosity at the expense of efficiency /s

tbm57··on Cities Skylines 2 runs with 20fps on an Nvidia RTX4090
software optimization as a practice is dead
tbm57··on Where does my computer get the time from?
I think we need a community-maintained and democratized time-tracking standard so we're not so beholden to Big Time
