tarr11··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020)
OP uses their calendar as a supplement for their the todo file. There is a lot of functionality implied in that decision:

- calendars have mobile apps which enable quick and precise entry

- calendars understand time spans

- calendars have many options to display events

- calendars have cloud syncing

- calendars are backed by a queryable data store

Not saying using a text file is good or bad, but I think a more accurate title would be “my productivity app is a never ending txt file and a calendar app”

tarr11··on Amazon is chopping jobs at its One Medical and Pharmacy units
I was looking at them and gave them my contact info. The aggressive sales techniques- many calls and texts within a week - really turned me off.
tarr11··on Ask HN: Does this math education idea make sense?
Mathacademy.com is pretty good for this. My kid used it in HS and liked it.

It has a system that can move you forward quicker for concepts that you know. It goes pretty far through a college math curriculum.

It also uses some spaced repetition as well to cement the ideas.

tarr11··on Compressing Text into Images
OP converted a Unicode file to an ascii file.

Isn’t the loss of precision what is “compressing” the file? The Shakespeare corpus probably doesn’t use any Unicode characters.

tarr11··on A vision for the alleviation of water scarcity in the US Southwest
From https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2022.8451...

“ In general, anthropogenic activities pollute the coastal marine environment, altering the environment’s physiochemical properties and resulting in changes in marine communities. Physiochemical conditions can be altered by the presence of pollutants, hypoxia, organic enrichment, decreased hydrodynamic conditions, and, more recently, brine discharge (de-la-Ossa-Carretero et al., 2016). Salinity elevation in receiving soil and water bodies and the territorial consequences of brine with high total dissolved solids on benthic marine life close to the discharge site are the most important environmental challenges associated with brine disposal (Miri and Chouikhi, 2005; Panagopoulos et al., 2019).”

Lots more detail in the article on studies of specific populations as well as discussion of mitigations and alternatives.

tarr11··on Facebook Is Being Overrun with Stolen, AI-Gen Images That People Think Are Real
I wonder if this problem could be addressed with immutable timestamps and a vector database with image embeddings.

Eg, someone builds a system that constructs a graph that points images back to the previous references, based on their distances.

The one with the earliest timestamp is considered the original.

tarr11··on Humane AI Pin
Isn't this just the Halting problem? No software has the property of being "determinate".
tarr11··on Braid is dead, long live Braid
I appreciate stories like this, they are the memento mori of startups.
tarr11··on Screeps – MMO sandbox game for programmers
Cool! Reminds me of Code Combat a bit.
tarr11··on Epic Games is laying off 16% of its staff
You can also use "Mesh to Metahuman" to make stylized characters but with more interesting facial expressions

tarr11··on Unity Can Get Fucked
I hope they don’t decide to make their own engine for Rust 2.

If they need custom stuff, build it for Godot instead.

If Godot can become the Blender of game engines, game developers will be in a much better place.

tarr11··on Factorio: Space Age
Tears of the Kingdom went through a similar year long testing and refinement phase

tarr11··on He dropped out to become a poet – now he’s won a Fields Medal (2022)
I found the writing of this piece to be very clear and accessible.

Whenever i read something like this, I marvel at the author who can be both fluent in Mathematics and have an ability to convey very complex ideas to a lay reader.

tarr11··on Power companies fight Maine’s proposed non-profit utility
I wish California would consider this for PGE
tarr11··on Wevi: Word Embedding Visual Inspector
I found this to be a useful way to visualize the word2vec algorithm
tarr11··on MusicGen: Simple and controllable music generation
This feels like a straw man to me. We are continuing to automate feeding, housing and clothing ourselves as well. These two things are not mutually exclusive.

I would like to make music, video games and movies, too, and AI lets me do that. I don’t need millions of dollars or years of training to make something creative anymore.

tarr11··on Fallen Pizza Startup Zume Shuts Down After Raising Millions
Wonder if they were too focused on solving the wrong problem. Reminds me of this article (featuring an innovative pizza box design from Zume)

Maybe if they just built pizza boxes instead of a delivery service they could have been successful.

tarr11··on Run Llama 13B with a 6GB graphics card
What is the state of the art on evaluating the accuracy of these models? Is there some equivalent to an “end to end test”?

It feels somewhat recursive since the input and output are natural language and so you would need another LLM to evaluate whether the model answered a prompt correctly.

tarr11··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
> The Stanford study points out that since charging electric vehicles takes time using conventional chargers, owners tend to leave their cars charging in the evenings and overnight, putting added pressure on the grid. Demand peaks between 5-9 pm as people return home from work and use electric appliances like televisions and kettles.

> If vehicle owners were to charge them during the day, this could cut costs and help the grid as the number of electric vehicles increase to meet sustainable goals, the authors say.

My EV (Tesla) already has a charging option for when rates are cheapest. I would assume that most EVs will have that feature if they don’t already?

Not sure I understand why this is considered a big problem.

tarr11··on An Ominous Heating Event Is Unfolding in the Oceans

tarr11··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
I wasn’t aware of the nuclear problems in France. Here is some explanation of the problems.

tarr11··on Laid off by Big Tech, then recruited for contract work – at the same place
Tldr: recruiters are trying to bait workers with contract work at the company they’ve just been laid off from, but then turn around and submit them to many other companies instead.

> Lawrence Dearth, the president of staffing company Insight Global, said the average recruiter is simply hoping to make contact with a talented individual. After the initial contact, they’ll ship the worker’s resume out to 10 to 15 different companies.

tarr11··on SpaceX alums are branching out and shaping the startup economy
How have the returns been?
tarr11··on The water technology behind Avatar: The Way of Water
It doesn’t say in the article how this was implemented. Was all this simulation done in something like Houdini or is there a custom engine Weta uses?
tarr11··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Does this mean that SVB customers are going to lose deposits over the FDIC limit (250k?)
tarr11··on Running large language models like ChatGPT on a single GPU
Wonder if someone would be willing to start an open source project where we could crowdsource donations for training, and people could possibly donate their GPU usage for it.
tarr11··on Deepfake scams are here and we're not ready
Banning or regulating AI wouldn’t impact scammers at all.
tarr11··on First signs of spring have arrived in parts of south 3 weeks sooner than average

tarr11··on PagerDuty to Lay Off 7% of Staff; Revenue Officer to Exit
Consider wearing a product hat as well; is doing undifferentiated work the best use of your very limited engineering resources?

There are less expensive alternatives to PagerDuty that might have fit your budget, and wouldn't have put your engineering team on the hook for managing this custom built service forever.
