tankbot··on He got 1%, we can't hire him
Not to be nitpicky, but rather to help: You are using 'me' and 'I' backwards. It's really distracting and made it difficult to get through the beginning of the post to the actual story.

The rules are simple: Take Carl out of the sentence. Would you say "Me made myself available"? No. Then why "Carl and me made ourselves available"?

Would you say "score extra points with I"? No. Then why "score extra points with Carl and I"?

If you are in the subject of the sentence, then use I: "Carl and I went to the movies."

If you are in the predicate, or are the object of an action, use me: "The students handed their completed tests to Carl and me."

tankbot··on What happens when you use a standing desk for two years
I find it best to move between sitting/standing. I sit in the morning and stand in the afternoon. Standing in the afternoon gets/keeps circulation going and prevents that drowsy feeling that can sap productivity after work.

Something else that's great to add: a bicycle. I sold my car and commute by bike to/from work about 7 miles each way. The added leg strength is amazing, not to mention it tightens your core, which helps with back pain, and there are cardio benefits, too.

It's also a lot of fun. I look for excuses to ride my bike.

tankbot··on Exploring aisles 9-13 at my local supermarket
So true and so irritating! Health detriments aside, I can't stand this food. It's too sweet!

Once you get used to good food that doesn't contain gobs of salt and HFCS, the stuff that does is disgusting.

tankbot··on Tesla Model S achieves best safety rating of any car ever tested
That's amazing! I had no idea the F1 was so sturdy. My assumption (probably common) is that these super light exotics disintegrate when hitting large insects, let alone walls.
tankbot··on My Final Post
This made me think of a quote from a movie. Actually it was just the trailer I saw, years ago. Took some digging but here you go, it's from The Libertine:

"...you must acquire the trick of ignoring those who do not like you. In my experience, those who do not like you fall into two categories: The stupid and the envious. The stupid will like you in five years time. The envious, never."

tankbot··on What Exactly Did The US Government Ask Lavabit to Do?
Someone else can probably answer this more accurately, but I don't see that these two things are related.

That is, they may have referenced the Stored Communications Act when requesting the information, but that is not what puts a gag on Lavabit.

tankbot··on “People simply empty out”
Yeah Friday. It's Bagel day!

But this crap still bothers me. It drags an otherwise nice discussion about good art into the gutter of reactionary judgements. A lot of really good artists had/have problems, but that doesn't discount their work.

tankbot··on “People simply empty out”
Agreed. Succinctly put.
tankbot··on “People simply empty out”
So you have to like everything about a person in order to appreciate their art? I never realized this was a prerequisite, thanks for clearing that up.

You do realize that this ignorant, reactionary stance invalidates the work of practically everyone ever, yes?

EDIT: If you're going to downvote someone's comment please have the guts to make an argument.

Run With the Hunted and Love is a Dog from Hell spring to mind, but for me half the fun of reading him is just jumping in randomly. His life was chaos so it's fitting. If you read enough about "Hank" a picture of who he was will start to materialize.

Since he's dead and not able to spend your book sales money on booze and horses, he'd probably be ok with you just reading his stuff online for free[0]. He is also great to listen to, there are a lot of recordings of his readings that you can find in the usual places. The poems are filled with a kind of beautiful carnage which contrasts the even tone of his delivery. Like, "Yeah, that crazy shit happened but so what?"

One of my favorites as a teaser to start with:

  Rain

  a symphony orchestra.
  there is a thunderstorm,
they are playing a Wagner overture
and the people leave their seats under the trees
and run inside to the pavilion
the women giggling, the men pretending calm,
  wet cigarettes being thrown away,
Wagner plays on, and then they are all under the
pavilion. the birds even come in from the trees
and enter the pavilion and then it is the Hungarian
Rhapsody #2 by Lizst, and it still rains, but look,
one man sits alone in the rain
listening. the audience notices him. they turn
and look. the orchestra goes about its
business. the man sits in the night in the rain,
listening. there is something wrong with him,
  isn't there?
  he came to hear the
  music.

p.s. I can't speak for the quality of that site, you may have better luck elsewhere. When I looked up Rain all I got was the first line, so it's possible that other poems have errors.

I took "work" to mean purpose, which applies in either case.

The problem comes when people limit themselves to a singular purpose and spend the rest of their time being consumers. The don't learn and grow and so end up in this rut for the duration. You're left with aging, atrophied, one-dimensional automatons who don't know anything else besides the grind and T.V. to relax in the evening. Rinse, repeat. When they retire they have no idea what to do with themselves and the thought of figuring it out probably makes them anxious so they stick to what they know.

Speaking of which, I gotta go. TMZ is on soon...

Can I just say that I love Charles Bukowski? If you've never read him go buy his books now. There's so much humanity in there. Some will think he's a downer or depressing, but I think he's genius. His life reminds me of this quote by Hokusai:

When I was 50 I had published a universe of designs. But all I have done before the the age of 70 is not worth bothering with. At 75 I'll have learned something of the pattern of nature, of animals, of plants, of trees, birds, fish and insects. When I am 80 you will see real progress. At 90 I shall have cut my way deeply into the mystery of life itself. At 100, I shall be a marvelous artist. At 110, everything I create; a dot, a line, will jump to life as never before.

Never stop learning, folks.

tankbot··on NSA broke privacy rules thousands of times per year, audit finds
Please tell me this is Swiftian irony and you are playing Devil's Advocate for the sake of conversation.
tankbot··on New species is first carnivore found in the Americas in 35 years
My armchair assessment was that its long, finger-like paws were for digging those "crunchies" out of trees, etc. but was disappointed when the article didn't mention anything about it.

I never knew until now that there is no taxonomical classification for Omnivores.

tankbot··on Meet the Dread Pirate Roberts, the man behind Silk Road
Certainly he has justification. Also, clever use of a Princess Bride quote.

Inconceivable!

tankbot··on Meet the Dread Pirate Roberts, the man behind Silk Road
I don't have the links handy, but it's well know that mail has been photographed for years and it seems likely that PRISM or some gov database is already ingesting this information. Seems like an easy step to upgrade the camera to something that attempts to scan contents.
tankbot··on Your protestations about “literally” are literally wrong
You're making the same argument as the post, it's worth reading. He is saying that telling people they can't use "literally" as an exaggeration is wrong because words mean what you want them to.

He is also explaining that the dictionaries that have updated "literally" to show this usage are not dictating anything, they merely reflect the way the word is being commonly used.

tankbot··on Ubuntu Edge funding reaches $10M
Indeed. $22 million in 8 days would be some kind of miracle.

I really wanted this thing too.

tankbot··on Poll: What OS do you currently use?
I use all of these except BSD, unless OS X counts in that regard...
tankbot··on Poll: What OS do you currently use?
iOS is OS X. I'd bet it's someone who either didn't realize that the two popular mobile OS's are variants of common desktops, or someone who is playing with something like BeOS or Plan 9 or some other more obscure OS.

Could be someone who is writing their own.

tankbot··on DOJ Elevated Its Charges Against Swartz Because Internet Rallied on His Behalf
> a bigger scandal than Watergate.

Depends on how you qualify its big-ness. Go out and talk to regular, non-techie folks about NSA spying. In the unlikely event that you even find someone who knows what you are talking about, they won't care. They will look at you like you're crazy and they'll say, "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about."

If it's just a small, quickly forgotten blurb on Fox news between TERRORISM and Honey Boo-Boo then does it even qualify as scandal?

tankbot··on Hyperloop
Just read the first part, it's only a few pages.

It's an exciting approach to high-speed land travel at a proposed cost of far far less than the California coastal rail's $70 billion minimum price point.

tankbot··on Kickstart the GNUstep Project
You're adding to the problem here instead of taking the constructive criticism to heart and taking action to make things better.

This project is now a business seeking outside funding and should be conducted as such. There are no excuses and perception is everything. Instead of an itemized (note: this projects as petty) response, you need to fix it and say "thank you" to sillysaurus for the valuable input.

You've since added $1 minimum contributions. Awesome! What does that person get? An honorable mention? Their name on the 'Founder's List'? There's nothing in the tier descriptions...

The overall message is still unclear. How does Johnny MacBook benefit from all of your hard work? What is the point?

I want this project to succeed, and that is where the feedback comes from. It's obvious to me and everyone else here that you've put a lot of time and effort into this project. Please don't make the mistake of thinking that it's enough to build it. If they don't know what it is and what it does for them, they won't come.

tankbot··on Hyperloop
Just finished reading the pdf and now I understand why this is by far the most popular HN post for a long time (ever?). I now post my feeble comment to be lost in a sea of enamored nerd buzz.

Fucking awesome, Elon.

tankbot··on Homes for Hackers gets a visit from the FBI
Seems like another reason to never start talking in the first place. Thanks!
tankbot··on Homes for Hackers gets a visit from the FBI
So am I correct to assume that, according to this description and the other answer, that this falls under the 4th amendment and since the person in question initially answered questions they implicitly gave up this right and are thus accountable when they decide to stop talking?
tankbot··on Homes for Hackers gets a visit from the FBI
> The fact you remained silent after being asked a question can be used against you in certain situations, especially with a non-custodial questioning.

How is this possible given the 4th and 5th amendments?

tankbot··on Homes for Hackers gets a visit from the FBI
Bzzzt! Wrong answer!

Say nothing, ever, for any reason. [0]

The only thing you should ever say to Police is, "Am I suspected of committing a crime?"

  if (crime_suspect) {
    lawyer(yourself);
  } else {
    print "Thank you, have a nice day.";
  }

tankbot··on Specifications of the planned solar-powered Ubuntu laptop
Seconded. Of all the features this one caught me off-guard a bit. I was expecting a small-ish SSD akin to what a Chromebook sports.

A 120GB SSD would be really nice in this machine.
