tamade··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
How likely will Trump DOJ drop this? Consumers have choice, albeit just a handful of credible options. Nobody is forced to use Chrome (unlike MSFT pushing IE back in the day)
tamade··on Wonder is acquiring Grubhub
"new kind of food hall" sounds much better than ghost kitchen
tamade··on New York City Council Votes to End Broker Fees Squeezing Renters
Glad they are ending this notorious NYC grift. Renting in the city is a horrible experience in no small part due to this broker racket
tamade··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
better idea: let's ban nepobabies in california politics
tamade··on Say a Final Goodbye to Sprint – T-Mobile Is Reportedly Shutting It Down
Always found T-Mobile to be an odd brand for the US market since Americans still refer to these devices as cell phones rather than mobiles like the rest of the world. Wonder if they considered keeping the Sprint brand instead?
tamade··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
Ironic given the legal saga between the two
tamade··on Japan's Old Art of Soba Noodle Delivery on Bicycles
Had the most sublime soba ever at Juugo in Kyoto. Small shop right off the Philosopher's Path. Literally farm-to-table, every serving made to order by chef-owner Ishhibashi-san who harvests his own buckwheat on his farm. Amazing what magic he conjures with just buckwheat and water. Try his sobagaki as well.
tamade··on Overnight 'hotel train' could link San Francisco and Los Angeles
This is so sad. Tokyo-Osaka, a bit shorter than SF-LA, is a 2.5 hr train ride. Beijing-Shanghai, twice as far as SF-LA, is a mere 4 hour train ride.
tamade··on DPReview.com to close
Why not find a buyer? Plenty of traffic and monetization
tamade··on We're Drowning in Subscriptions
Is there a card program for subscriptions? Similar to how Ramp or Brex manage SaaS payments but for personal use.
tamade··on UBS in talks to acquire Credit Suisse
The two rival banks have a lot in common, essentially identical cultures and similar scandals (though arguably CS has been more poorly run in recent years). Current CEO at CS ran a big part of UBS before taking the top job
tamade··on Minimum Viable Finance: The Guide for Seed/Series A Startups
Mercury Treasury takes a hefty cut (0.6%) of VUSXX yield. Any alternatives other than opening a Vanguard account?
tamade··on Stripe announces new round of funding and plan to provide employee liquidity
That last sentence is corporate PR spin. They very much need this capital to run the business, ie, they didn't have enough money to pay taxes.
tamade··on Mercury Vault: money market fund and up to $3M in FDIC insurance
> We also have a product called Mercury Treasury. This allows you to invest in mutual funds, the safest of which is a Vanguard Treasury Money Market fund (VUSXX)

Mercury charges 60bps for their Treasury product. Why the hefty fee for buying MMFs? VUSXX expense ratio is 9bps for comparison.

tamade··on Dow said it was recycling our shoes. We found them at an Indonesian flea market
The journalists went out of their way to not call them AirTags
tamade··on Japan: the harbinger state
It's just a notional loss for tax purposes. Japan has generous depreciation loopholes, some of which was closed a few years ago.
tamade··on Japan: the harbinger state
Not really. Japan isn't unique in how property is valued. Real estate values in market-based economies are set by the market. Cap rates in Japan are comparable to the US and other major markets. Assigning value to land or improvements is just accounting. Buildings in Japan (and elsewhere) "lose value" over time due to depreciation, not because only land has value. There are huge tax advantages to owning real estate vs other asset classes. For example, Japanese real estate owners take advantage of accelerated depreciation for wooden structures as a tax shield.
tamade··on The Radical Design of PizzaExpress
PizzaExpress was ahead of its time with its design and fast casual positioning

tamade··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
I was at PKU around that time too, ate at the shop in Haidian book city a couple times. Apparently they rebranded https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Lee_(restaurant)
tamade··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
They serve Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Obvious reasons why they opted for California branding instead.
tamade··on Challenges with capturing and storing rainwater for drought in California
The reason is California lacks infrastructure to collect rainwater. Rain hitting urban areas mostly heads out to the ocean or into the sewage network. The tech and engineering know-how to collect and recycle storm water at scale is available-- Singapore does a great job at this.
tamade··on My secret life as an 11-year-old BBS sysop
Brings back fond memories of helping sysop our local BBS, Korova Milkbar
tamade··on The Netherlands may be the first country to hit the limits of growth
"Importing more migrant workers isn’t a popular idea..." well there you have it.
tamade··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
If you can't beat them, buy them
tamade··on One kitchen, hundreds of internet restaurants
That's not how CPG business models work. Unilever doesn't "churn out thousands of brands" to cannibalize their own portfolio. What they are doing is building brand equity and competing for sales and shelf space vs other CPG brands-- that costs a lot of money and takes years.

The cloud kitchen model is more akin to putting lipstick on pigs...

tamade··on FTC takes action to stop Opendoor from cheating potential sellers
Judging from the losses they are taking on short sales, Opendoor seems to have overpaid on the bulk of their home inventory. Ironic to get penalized for deceptive practices, but not actually profit from them.
tamade··on Brazil's answer to the Sichuan pepper
Dried peppercorns are found in most Chinese kitchens. It's not used in every dish, but it's certainly a staple in any Chinese pantry. The related Sansho peppercorn is used like black pepper in Japanese cooking.
tamade··on Fred Wilson: Some Thoughts on Twitter (Continued)
I tend to agree with Fred's view that this litigation will likely end with a settlement north of $1bn for Elon to walk away. Twitter BOD doesn't actually want to force Elon to buy TWTR, but has a fiduciary obligation to do so. That said, Elon is playing multidimensional chess if this TWTR bid was just a pretext to unload $8.5bn worth of Tesla stock.
