tahoeskibum··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
As a consumer, the new T-mobile has been great. I was finally able to switch away from Verizon, as their prices are cheaper, and the 5G network equally good.
tahoeskibum··on What Apple means when it says "shot on iPhone"
It just means that it is good enough to replace a professional camera. Did people think that it'll be just random dude taking some shaky videos?
tahoeskibum··on All-new solar-powered 'city car' is coming to the U.S. – it costs $6,250
Basically a golf cart that with a max speed of 28 mph. Perfect for golf club retirees, but not the 99% of US consumers.
tahoeskibum··on NASA's Psyche Spacecraft, Optical Comms Demo En Route to Asteroid
They are using ground based telescope observatories. "...To receive the downlinked high-rate data sent from the probe, NASA is relying on the 200-inch Hale Telescope at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, which sits atop a mountain south of JPL."
tahoeskibum··on Why has a useless cold medication been allowed on shelves for years?
It is simple: the original ingredient pseudoephedrine was put behind counter as it can be used for meth production. The replacement phenylephedrine is just not effective, something I've known for years (so I always go behind the counter).
tahoeskibum··on Super-Earths in Need for Extremly Big Rockets (2018)
I'm curious how much harder it would be on these planets to launch 1) Sputnik like satellite 2) Hubble Space telescope
tahoeskibum··on The Device That Won WW2: A History of the Cavity Magnetron
In addition to being used in microwaves, magnetrons are also used in radiation therapy for cancer, to power the linacs.
tahoeskibum··on One reason Tesla is letting rival car companies use its EV charging stations
The Tesla mission statement is “to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.” Opening up Superchargers is in alignment with it.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months
Highly rated Wall St analysts were saying the same thing in 2009 comparing about Apple with Nokia.
tahoeskibum··on Aspartame sweetener to be declared possible cancer risk by WHO, say reports
Coffee is a known carcinogen (due to formation of acrylamides in roasting). Ripe fruits emit small amounts ethylene that is carcinogenic.
tahoeskibum··on The first V8 powered Tesla hits the road
So what's next: a horse drawn Ford :-)
tahoeskibum··on Tesla Confirms Automated Driving Systems Were Engaged During Fatal Crash
This was an old 2014 model which had old HW1 Mobileye based package. It cannot have FSD.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla Confirms Automated Driving Systems Were Engaged During Fatal Crash
This was an old 2014 model with basically advanced traffic aware cruise control. I wonder how many Toyotas get into accidents with regular cruise control. The figure of merit is number of accidents per mile...
tahoeskibum··on [dead]
Yup let's take the capital away from efficient resource allocators like Bezos and Musk and let the inefficient government waste it away... Bernie doesn't understand that this money is tied up in capital investments, which create jobs.
tahoeskibum··on Ask HN: Who is doing Car UX well?
Tesla does a great job. The touchscreen has low latency and the layout is intuitive. But best of all, most things can be done by voice including seat heating (say "my butt is cold").
tahoeskibum··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
But then again, Chat GPT just passed law school exams, albeit at C+ in blind testing.

From Wikipedia: Vaccine misinformation In May 2021, Kirsch posted an article online claiming that COVID-19 vaccines affect fertility, while also underplaying the vaccines' ability to prevent illness and death, both statements criticized by fact checkers as being inaccurate and misleading.[14] In September 2021, speaking at an FDA meeting and identifying himself as CETF's executive director, Kirsch claimed that the vaccines "kill twice as many as they save"; the FDA responded that Kirsch had misinterpreted data and that there was no evidence his statement was true.[11][15] Reuters assessed the claim as false.[15]

In October 2021, Kirsch founded the anti-vaccine group Vaccine Safety Research Foundation (VSRF),[16] which created ads depicting deaths the group attributed to vaccines.[17][18] Foundation advisors include Robert Malone, Peter McCullough, and Stephanie Seneff. Soon after, Kirsch appeared with Malone on the Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying podcast, which according to MIT Technical Review "introduced Kirsch to followers of the 'intellectual dark web'" and allowed him to access a "large and receptive audience to his claims about a fluvoxamine conspiracy".[11]

tahoeskibum··on A.I. Will Change YouTube Forever
Can't AI channels get good enough to get loved and have people genuinely excited about seeing the next video? At first there will be some human curation, eventually the AI will get good enough.
tahoeskibum··on Twitter engineer explains how it will break in the coming weeks
It is almost as though many folks want Twitter to fail, instead of having a better social media to compete with Meta/TikTok. People forget that Elon was one of the original dot com millionaires with his success in PayPal. Back then they said that he can't land/reuse rockets or make electric cars.
tahoeskibum··on Student loan forgiveness will cost US $300B
If the goal was $300B in consumer spending, then they should've just given a tax rebate to everybody below a certain income. Instead, this penalizes students who paid off their loans and non-college graduates who might've taken out loans to setup a service business like electrician or car mechanic.
tahoeskibum··on The first car ad shows what changed, what hasn’t
It was also a lot more expensive back then. Today you can pay first class and get better service. Ultimately this is what happens when air travel gets democratized: people focus on low costs.
tahoeskibum··on Twitter Sues Elon Musk
Fun to see how it went from: Musk can't/shouldn't buy Twitter and we shall implement a poison pill to prevent him -- to you must buy us out at a hefty premium to the market.
tahoeskibum··on Embodiment is indispensable for AGI
Tesla FSD Beta has a body with sensors (cameras) and actuators (engine/wheels/steering). Does that count as embodiment?
tahoeskibum··on Ford to Impose Non-Negotiable Pricing on EV Sales as Part of Model E Plan
The same way people buy a phone without trying it. Electric cars will be appliances. Some will pay premium for Tesla like for Apple, and others will find that Hyundai's are a good bang for buck too.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla to recall vehicles that may disobey stop signs
I have FSD Beta and I can tell you I have never seen FSD do a rolling stop.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla's Autopilot may not have been available at time of driverless Texas crash
This is a case of bias against anything that smells of AI. Media blew this one: any Tesla owner could've told you that AutoPilot cannot be switched on in roads with no lane markings. The peak hysteria was when Consumer Reports showed users how to fool AutoPilot by a set of complex pre-planned steps, which would be considered sabotage in any industrial setting.
tahoeskibum··on Tesla Q4 2020 Earnings
You would've made the same comparison between Apple and Nokia back in 2008. If you've ever driven a Tesla, you'll realize that it is a paradigm shift just like the iPhone was back in 2008 relative to Nokia.
tahoeskibum··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
Here's the link to Economist article from 2005, which explains how IKEA uses non-profit status. I frequently buy from IKEA but used to think of it a well oiled corporation, and didn't know that it was "non-profit".

tahoeskibum··on U.S. physicists rally around plan to build fusion power plant
I think that solar/wind + battery (e.g. Tesla Megapack) will make fusion irrelevant.
tahoeskibum··on Airbnb S-1
I just got an email from AirBnB outlining their plan to offer shares to hosts as a part of the IPO with first dibs to hosts that first came on the platform.
