tacticaldev··on If you buy a Cybertruck, Tesla says you can't sell it for a year
It's also worth mentioning that Ferrari also asks you to simply call them first, before selling it (within that first year). I've never bought a ferrari but it seems like you have some options depending on your needs/situation/etc.
tacticaldev··on If you buy a Cybertruck, Tesla says you can't sell it for a year
This isn't a new idea; Ferrari has been doing this for a "while".
tacticaldev··on The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening (1985) [pdf]
Not a bad read. Looks like it's got a lot of technique(s) and basics. Could probably use some updates on materials and tooling for higher end (modern/powder metallurgical) steels.

Knowing how to sharpen your tools is something just about everyone should learn. Almost all of us have at least a kitchen knofe that needs attention.

tacticaldev··on AOL pretends to be the internet
I get so nostalgic about AOL. It's why I learned Visual Basic (a natural progression from QBasic in my DOS days). All my friends and I wrote "Punters", "Macros" and "Progz". It really jump started my journey into Software/Programming. A year or so later I installed NetBSD and never looked back, but I often think about those late night hacking sessions writing horrible VB...
tacticaldev··on What Is Textmode?
ANSI/Ascii Art will always hold a special place in my heart. The Good ol' WaReZ days and of course my more embarrassing AOL Punters/Progs scene years from my early tweens.
tacticaldev··on 'Terminator' 1 and 2 Save Their Reveals for the Right Time
"Sex, in other words, literally makes them too ignorant to live." -- anyone with Kids can tell you this is true...
tacticaldev··on The hype around esports is fading as investors and sponsors dry up
Hasn't this happened before? Reading the History of eSports will show 'pretty much' the same thing happening in the 80's with High Score Arcade tournaments, then in the 90's with Console Game Championships, etc...

We may see another round of interest when the new wave of gaming systems matures, but I think this will always be the case. Maybe next time people will learn from the past?

tacticaldev··on MIT researchers propose Brazil-sized fleet of “space bubbles” to cool the Earth
Did they not see the Matrix Movie(s)?!
tacticaldev··on HUDS and GUIs: an inspiration resource site featuring Future User Interfaces
Let's not forget the scene from Jurassic Park where the young female uses FSN to navigate a unix file system to save the day.

tacticaldev··on SDF Public Access Unix System
My first Shell Account when I was like 15. I learned a lot from SDF before I started running BSD at home.
tacticaldev··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
Just another example of how Organic (clean food) propaganda isn't based in science. I can't tell you how often I hear cooks swear by their redish, darkwe yolk eggs for having some kind of magic properties. Interesting article, good read.
tacticaldev··on Pockit: A tiny, powerful, modular computer [video]
Ok, wow! This is, by far, the most innovative "product" I've seen in years!

I will definitely be keeping a very close eye on this project!

I sincerely hope it does well enough to get to production levels large enough to be "affordable". I would totally buy this for my Daughter's as a way to get them interested in building/coding.

tacticaldev··on The curious case of the Raspberry Pi in the network closet (2019)
This story sounds so familiar; did this get posted 3-4 years ago? Good story and good sleuthing tho.
tacticaldev··on Cryptoland [video]
Blockchain Fyre Festival?
tacticaldev··on Dev corrupts NPM libs 'colors' and 'faker', breaking thousands of apps
While we don't do this with every package. If a package isn't managed by a team or company, we tend to fork these libraries. if it's critical we at least discuss contributing.
tacticaldev··on XMPP: The secure communication protocol that respects privacy
Isn't that Jabber? Haven't heard of XMPP in a while.
tacticaldev··on 14kb WASM game written in D
A LITTLE SLOWER, BUT WAY LESS BUGGY. Thanks for sharing the link. Very cool for a 1k game.
tacticaldev··on 14kb WASM game written in D
SUPER IMPRESSIVE, SUPER BUGGY... VERY COOL (OVER ALL)...
tacticaldev··on Remembering Windows 3.1 themes and user empowerment
this idea was probably one of the first points that drew me into the Linux community when I was young (so many decades ago). The idea of customizing and even modifying my own Window Manager was intriguing!
tacticaldev··on Stored Procedures as a Back End
I'm currently part of a team trying to UNDO this very concept. It sounded great in the beginning, but after years of headaches and wasted cash; we're building the backend in something else. I wasn't part of the original team. Nor was I part of the decision to migrate off of the system. I just know that for my employer, it was a bad decision those many years ago...
tacticaldev··on Show HN: Tiny mobile-friendly interactive fiction game
had a lot of fun, but ended up getting stuck with the dragon. explored every room multiple times but never found anything that helped hurt the dragon. i'm probably just missing something... still fun, up until a point- which from the comments doesn't seem like anyone else hit this snag, so it must just be me lol
tacticaldev··on OB–4 – Portable high fidelity loudspeaker
their stuff is awesome, but so expensive! I've wanted an OP-1 for a long time, just can't fork out that kind of cash for a "toy"
tacticaldev··on Show HN: Dating app focused on chatting and gamification
it certainly sets a tone for the intended audience.
tacticaldev··on Turning Off Autoplaying Previews
Awesome! auto-playing previews has always caused issues on my Roku devices
tacticaldev··on Xip.io: Wildcard DNS for Everyone
anyone else get a HTTP 105 while trying to access xip.io ? (ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED)
tacticaldev··on Show HN: Chrome extension that plants trees for free while shopping at 50k shops
yes, I'm interested in the overhead as well, and how much of that is actually going to planting trees?

The only information on the site about this question would be; "We use the majority of that fee for planting trees."

tacticaldev··on Show HN: I made online community for unusual people
yeah, that was the first thing I saw when I logged in for the first time.
tacticaldev··on Show HN: I made online community for unusual people

tacticaldev··on Slack Is Down
is for me :(
tacticaldev··on Show HN: Civitas – An empire-building game written in JavaScript
I opened an issue on Github over missing images. Anyone else try running this yet? Setting up was super easy but there appears to be a missing /images/assets directory where most of the UI is stored... I was very interested in trying this out.
