t3rabytes··on Tesla is launching their developer APIs
?? You have to grant an app access to your car via the API with your own Tesla.com oauth creds.
t3rabytes··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
Re 1: The US built 1,000,000 new homes last year without anyone saying "how we the country cope with this increase in need for wood/etc". Most new homes will have multiple 50A circuits to power an electric range and/or HVAC system. Most level 2 electric car chargers max at 50-75A, and can be configured to only charge during times of low grid power demand. Every electric car in existence won't be DC fast charging all the time. In fact, I'd wager for most EV owners in the US today, DC fast charging is a very very low percent of their total charge allocation (between DC fast and AC level 2).
t3rabytes··on Bill to ban hidden fees in California signed into law
The UK is an oddball now -- VAT-free shopping for non-UK citizens ended in 2021. You can still do it in (most?) EU member states though.
t3rabytes··on The $53.000 Intel Mac Pro won't be usable for developing VisionOS apps
A 4 year old device on a different CPU architecture. The Mac Pro wasn’t a device aimed at developers, it was aimed at creatives. This title is grandstanding.
t3rabytes··on Brightline Orlando's first train: 125 mph from MCO to MIA [video]
Brightline takes a bit of a longer path (straight to the coast and down) than can via car (more direct).
t3rabytes··on USPS In-Person Identity Proofing
> In and out in 5 minutes.

Most of my USPS experiences are great once I actually get to the desk, but it might take 45-60 minutes of standing in line before I actually get there.

t3rabytes··on Why We're Pulling Our Recommendation of Wyze Security Cameras
https://www.theverge.com/23573362/anker-eufy-security-camera... Maybe avoid Eufy...
t3rabytes··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
Ford has been known to send corp engineers to dealerships to help diagnose and resolve recurring issues in specific vehicles (has happened to a coworker of mine, and the engineer did end up fixing the issue!) -- I wouldn't entirely doubt.
t3rabytes··on Home insurers cut natural disasters from policies as climate risks grow
That's not really an option for almost anyone with a mortgage on a home -- the lender will require home insurance with themselves listed as the primary payee.

Same with an auto loan for most lenders (Lightspeed being one of the abnormal ones that doesn't hold the title to the vehicle as collateral).

t3rabytes··on Bike Lane Sweepers (2021)
These are great for sidewalks, too.
t3rabytes··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
It's not new -- it's been around for a long time, since the late 60s maybe?
t3rabytes··on Web Environment Integrity has no standing at W3C; understanding new W3C work
At this point I don't think it matters -- if Google wants to do it, they'll do it. :/
t3rabytes··on UPS driver pay and benefits deal in US to be worth $170k a year, firm says
I'm not sure I can put a dollar cost on the theoretical toll that a package delivery job puts on your body versus being a dev.
t3rabytes··on Hacker mods an M1 Mac mini to receive power over Ethernet instead of AC
I pulled the specs for a dual-compressor fridge this morning for an unrelated reason and it only draws 180w... maybe the fridge can run on usb-c too! https://www.bosch-home.com/us/productslist/refrigerators/fri...
t3rabytes··on A room-temperature superconductor? New developments
I haven't seen a particularly great explanation that explains why this is such a positive discovery that is copy/paste/digestable. No MSM outlet is going to run this story unless they can say an impact.
t3rabytes··on Airlines are a lot like central banks (2020)
Platinum Medallion with Delta whose been on 30 segments this year with 2! "complimentary upgrades" across those. I'm going to start just booking first on the major (DL,UA,AA) with the direct flight from my local airport and be done with it. Loyalty doesn't buy anything when everyone has it via credit cards.
t3rabytes··on Cryptography may offer a solution to the AI-labeling problem
Better title: "AI companies propose using C2PA to identify AI-generated content"
t3rabytes··on Tell HN: Airbnb’s transparent pricing is a lie
"Display total price" "Display total price for real"
t3rabytes··on Tell HN: Airbnb’s transparent pricing is a lie
The "Display total price" toggle should just be deemed misleading all together. It's explicit that it includes fees and not taxes, but is withholding tax info really the total price? No.
t3rabytes··on The Perfect Laptop
I'd venture to guess that the take rate on custom configs from any manufacturer is quite low. Most consumers are going to go to Best Buy, Apple Store, et al and buy what config is available today, not wait to order some custom model.
t3rabytes··on Boston mayor announces residential conversion program for office buildings
Common in NYC to do that to say you have the tallest building by height even if you were only approved to build X floors (your service floors don’t count) — from the couple videos I’ve watched about it over the years (see 432 Park Ave).
t3rabytes··on Google Cloud Workstations managed development environment is now GA
How many big corps in the US (I live in the US so that’s my reference) are doing engineering hardware rotation at sub-2 years? Most are likely to be 3.
t3rabytes··on Google Cloud Workstations managed development environment is now GA
Cloud desktops move the numbers game from CapEx to OpEx.

“CFOs love this one cool trick!”

t3rabytes··on Moody's downgrades US banking: ‘rapidly deteriorating operating environment’
At some point you could argue that Moody’s is the reason for the deteriorating operating environment given that their downgrade of SVB is what caused the need for the asset sale which caused the run (following media/VC fund reports).
t3rabytes··on Rivian in talks with Amazon to remove exclusivity clause of EV van agreement
Other outlets (The Verge) are reporting that Amazon actually only ordered their contractual minimum of 10k instead of the reported 100k, no source cited though.
t3rabytes··on The rise and fall of Birchbox, the startup valued at nearly $500M has vanished
Were there markets where they weren’t using UPS/FedEx for delivery? I’m in a semi-major metro and every time we’ve used HelloFresh it’s always been delivered by UPS at my standard delivery time (1-2pm).
t3rabytes··on SCOTUS Says Domestic Spying Is Too Secret to Be Challenged in Court
The US Justice system has been responding like this since at least the beginning of the War on Terror unfortunately. There are many lawsuits against the US government/CIA for their torture antics (leading to Congress writing their own report it!) that were dismissed as a matter of national security instead of dealing with the issue.
t3rabytes··on Developer with ADHD? You’re not alone
> In the US, the only external downside of ADHD

The FAA doesn't look kindly on ADHD diagnoses for people looking to get pilots licenses, even private. It adds a bunch of extra hoops to jump through.

t3rabytes··on Millennials who buy less are happier
> it was all the time researching, reading endless reviews

Interesting. This is actually where the dopamine hit comes from for me -- being educated at the things I want to buy at the rest for whatever price-point and goal I'm trying to achieve, whether that's something for the house (TV) or something related to a hobby (bike, espresso machine, etc).
