How can there be a higher standard if something doesn't apply to you?
t0ddbonzalez··on UK government advisor caught out by Wayback machine
The offence of Misconduct in Public Office, as the name suggests, applies only to those in public office. So it's not a higher standard - it's another, different standard. You or I couldn't be prosecuted for the offence (assuming you don't hold a public office...).

Humanity in a nutshell: "Why change our polluting ways when we could just blast our junk into space?"

Why do we think we have the right to blast our junk into space?

Who does the cleanup when a rocket explodes after launch and covers Florida/Guyana/Khazakstan in used diapers and hypodermic needles?

Indeed. The Scottish Chief Medical Officer was forced to resign in similar circumstances. I seem to recall the Scottish Tories calling for her head.

> "then please hold them to a higher standard, especially if they have any kind of public role."

Thing is, the law doesn't allow one class of persons to be held to a higher standard.

Everybody is supposed to be held to the same standard.

Of course, it seems in this situation that certain people in public service can exempt themselves from the common standard altogether with no punishment.

Hard to justify spending €860 on a no-name brand when I can buy a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 with the same spec for €550.

Ok, it comes with Windows 10 and it doesn't have a backlit keyboard but neither of those things are deal breakers if I'm saving €300.

Ah yes, the benefits of nuclear power with no responsibility for dealing with the waste.

Shifting the burden elsewhere hardly seems fair, does it?

Anyhow, I don't think that importing power from a neighboring country is a long-term solution to Germany's electricity needs.

The 8oz/240ml bottle of strawberry milk pictured in the article contains 170 calories and 10g of sugar... A perfect fit for Coca-Cola’s portfolio.

t0ddbonzalez··on America's Biggest Milk Producers Are Going Bankrupt
> "dairy consumption is very strongly linked to prostate cancer: Dr. Miller gave a huge talk about this. You can find it on Youtube."

Who is Dr Miller. Does he present his research in medical journals, or just on YouTube? Got a link to a research paper? "Look it up on YouTube" isn't a valid response when someone asks for proof of something...

> " Also, there's the China study..."

China's a big place. Lots of studies going on, I'd imagine. Again - got a link to a research paper?

How about this: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-canc...

"Milk and dairy are good sources of calcium and protein which are needed as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Calcium is important for teeth and bone health.

Studies looking into the link between cancer and dairy products have not given clear results. There is evidence that dairy products could reduce the risk of bowel cancer, but we cannot say for sure that this is the case. There is no strong evidence linking dairy products to any other types of cancer. We need further research to find out more about the links between dairy products and cancer risk."

Never mind, found this Guardian article from 2018: https://www.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2018/jun/09/...

> "In 2016, Canadian farmers received an average price of C$0.79 a litre for milk, compared with C$0.49 on average for US farmers."

So it appears that US farmers are paid roughly the same or slightly more than their European counterparts.

Out of curiosity, how much is a US dairy farmer paid for a gallon of milk?

t0ddbonzalez··on Suspension of Cogent Access to ARIN Whois
> "I think this is the wrong approach. The data is public."

But why should the registration data be in the public domain?

I don't publish my name/address/phone number in a phone book (remember those?) for obvious reasons. My domain registration info shouldn't be any different.

'No privacy' shouldn't be the default setting, with the customer having to pay extra for 'private' registration.

t0ddbonzalez··on Suspension of Cogent Access to ARIN Whois
If only some GDPR-type legislation existed which made it more difficult for companies like Cogent to misuse contact info in this way.

t0ddbonzalez··on College-educated workers are taking over the American factory floor
lol...if you say so. Five minutes on Indeed.com shows that you can get a $24k per year office job with a GED, so maybe you need to set you sights a bit higher.

Maybe the statistics are wrong and you're right, but I doubt it

t0ddbonzalez··on College-educated workers are taking over the American factory floor
>>$61k per year on average

>Here in Indy a 4-year degree will get you 13-16$ an hour to start.

Doing what?

t0ddbonzalez··on College-educated workers are taking over the American factory floor
Using the figures in the link I posted, a graduate with a Bachelor's degree will make $61k per year on average. So yeah, you may need to get into debt to get a degree, but you also earn more money with which to pay off the debt.

Being a naive European, I think education should be free just like universal healthcare - both of these things benefit society immensely. The sad thing is that those who have paid (or are currently paying) for the privilege of education or healthcare seems to be determined to maintain the status quo. Free stuff for other people is tantamount to communism in some people's eyes.

t0ddbonzalez··on College-educated workers are taking over the American factory floor
It's funny reading comments from Americans on the perceived lack of value of a college degree. I've never heard this nonsense repeated in any other country on the planet.

Then again, I don't think any other country on the planet shackles its young to such huge levels of debt in the name of education. Is there a 'fox and the grapes'-type situation going on, where people are hating on something they can't have?

Having a Bachelor's degree or higher means that you're less likely to be unemployed, you earn more money, you have better health outcomes, you're more involved in your children's education, and perhaps most importantly, society benefits from your education.

And the people who say "I don't have a degree and I make $150k per year at Google"? You're a statistical anomaly. The average salary for a high school graduate is $37k per year. (https://smartschoolsusa.org/blog/the-average-salary-by-educa...)

t0ddbonzalez··on Huawei Manages to Make Smartphones Without American Chips
Exactly. There is no EU call to ban Huawei infrastructure, so I'm mystified as to why you claimed 'the EU is on the "let's ban all Huawei products, China spies on us!" boat'.

The links you posted show that government departments in a couple of EU countries refuse to use Huawei, nothing more...

t0ddbonzalez··on Merck’s NotPetya attack: Was it an act of war?
>"And how are you so sure Merck's IT team didn't fail to have backups, redundancy, security patches, etc. to prevent an attack of any sort from being such a big deal?"

If the insurance claim is ~$1.3bn, we can safely say that the NotPetya cleanup isn't a trivial thing for them.

How many companies have we heard about who were totally screwed after a ransomware outbreak, because their only backups were online - network connected? Does anybody have offline backups anymore?

Is corporate IT negligent where it appears to have no disaster recovery plan?

t0ddbonzalez··on Huawei Manages to Make Smartphones Without American Chips
> 'Right now, e.g., the EU is on the "let's ban all Huawei products, China spies on us!" boat'

Really? Citation please.

Mike Pompeo's been going around Europe threatening dire consequences for any country which uses Huawei tech ("We won't work with allies that use Huawei equipment in their 5G networks", etc.), but I haven't heard of any calls for a ban at EU level...

Can you show me some proof that the EU wants to ban Huawei products?
