szx··on We need less powerful languages
Interesting. But what if it's both? Or maybe there's an interaction (expanding on "taste")?

That is, some languages are more expressive and/or powerful than others. Your great programmers will tend to gravitate towards these languages because they're able to spot and leverage their inherent advantages.

Conversely, other programmers will appreciate other qualities in languages, which may or may not overlap or interact with expressiveness etc. - e.g. ease (read: familiarity), rich ecosystem (read: lots of libraries and stackoverflow posts).

szx··on Cross-Platform UI in GitHub Desktop
Since the app already bundles web views and resources, I'm curious to hear if they considered making it an Electron app, and if they did - why they decided to go with multiple native apps instead.

(I realize at least the OSX version probably predates Electron, still might have paid off to completely rewrite.)

szx··on Getting Garbage Collection for Free
I wonder how hard it would be to implement something similar on the JVM (e.g. for Clojure games) or in games/graphic apps that embed V8.

The tricky part seems to be estimating how long garbage collection will take and/or the ability to stop GC if vsync is approaching.

szx··on What is Ethereum?
While I generally agree with your point, it seems to me like that specific scenario could be solved with a dead man's switch contract. Not ideal, but still better than other cases.

I got the impression that the answer you'd get from the Ethereum team is: at the worst case, this is just as bad/good as the current system - i.e. real world effects have to be mediated by an executing authority, same as a real world contract. They would add (and I agree) that smart contracts still have advantages, even in this case.

szx··on Gigster (YC S15) Does The Dev Work To Turn Your Idea Into An App
Sorry if I wasn't clear... I do agree with you - if anything I'm more skeptical :)
szx··on Gigster (YC S15) Does The Dev Work To Turn Your Idea Into An App
Hold on, are we talking employee or contractor? If it's the latter, I'd consider at least the following two points:

1. $20k/month every month? Unlikely.

2. Self-employment taxes + other business expenses.

szx··on Greek referendum results
Uh, no - this is a completely different situation. Whereas gay marriage has little to no effect on most Americans' lives, the results of this vote will affect each and every Greek citizen for years (decades?) to come.

Moving abroad (assuming that option is available to you) might simply be the rational thing to do in such a case.

szx··on Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext?
Incidentally, I just found out yesterday that Straight Talk (AT&T MVNO) keeps their online passwords in plaintext. Restoring your password actually sends you the password by email.

I'm glad I never reuse a password.

szx··on Exercism.io – Become a better programmer
I imagine the idea behind this was to avoid having to roll an in-browser IDE with the advantage of letting users use (and learn) the actual tooling that comes with that language.

I personally liked using my own editor, but the CLI didn't provide much added value in my opinion. The tests were enough for me and it was kind of annoying to have to run the CLI every time you're finished just to get the next exercise...

szx··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
That's actually a pretty common study size in neuro-imaging/fMRI studies. You may still disagree with the statistical validity of the findings, but there's nothing unusual about this specific study in that regard.
szx··on Facebook Launches Flow, Static Type Checker for JavaScript
This might be a stupid question, but is there a way to leverage object annotations [1] for runtime checks of data coming from e.g. an API or FFI call (node.js module calling C++ code)?

szx··on Facebook Launches Flow, Static Type Checker for JavaScript
Awesome. FYI, the Language Reference Next/Back links don't match the order in the left navbar.
szx··on Show HN: Hacker News Redesign
I've switched to http://hn.premii.com/ on mobile. Give it a try.
szx··on Poll: US residents, how do you do your taxes?
NYS actually sent me a letter saying I missed this and that credit, refund check enclosed. Pretty crazy.
szx··on Gmail was down
Your contacts' email addresses (or at least most of mine) wouldn't do you much good if everybody left gmail all of a sudden.
szx··on Why does it seem like threading and fibers in Node have been abandoned?
CPU-bound loads still block the event loop. Modules take care of this behind the scenes (sometimes?) but if you're rolling your own expensive operation threads can come in handy.
szx··on Show HN: Moon by Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson
Will look into it. We haven't had time to test with ghostery/disconnect but the site definitely doesn't _need_ any of those things to work (except maybe it wouldn't look very nice without the fonts from typekit). It's a bug, not a feature :)
szx··on Show HN: Moon by Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson
We initially wanted it to be anonymous but ended up going with login for two main reasons:

- Social login means sharing is only a click away, encouraging conversation and possibly more thoughtful contributions.

- We wanted to give people equal chance of contributing and avoid the scenario where a handful of users (vandals?) find the site before everyone else and take over it all. That meant limiting the number of marks a person can make in a given time period - and that's easiest to do when you have users.

Would love to hear your thoughts on these points. This is still a work in progress after all...

It was an incredible collaboration experience. We talk about this in the "making of" video that should be coming out soon (assuming we make the cut...)

Perhaps a WebGL issue? Email is in my profile if you're still having a difficulty.

Creative director (and developer). I doubt the artists have time to read HN :)
szx··on Yes, Clinical Trials Work
What I found most worrisome about the NYT piece was the idea that "the payoff for a successful Phase 3 trial can be so enormous that drug makers will often roll the dice".

Now, IANAStatistician but from what I understand there's an inherent (small) chance of any given trial showing a drug is effective. Wouldn't that mean that since there's such an incentive to test unpromising drugs, it's more likely some would get through by chance and get to the market?

szx··on Extreme Saving: A Man, His Van and Five-Figure Debt
This: "I have little patience for critics who don’t see the value in a liberal arts education. We don’t mock people who have children -- and there’s no practical value to having children."

szx··on Bret Victor: Learnable Programming
Computers are programmable. Pianos, horses, fires are not. Some (lower level) tasks absolutely require the programmer to think like a machine. Most do not.

We have the power to make it easier for ourselves, and lower the barrier of entry for others. They might develop that sympathy you speak of later on, but there's no reason why that should be a prerequisite.

szx··on Give people an iPhone 4S, tell them it's an iPhone 5
Am I the only one who prefers the older (3GS) designs over the new ones (4+) in terms of ergonomics?

Sure, my 4S is beautiful, but it just doesn't feel right in my hand. Something about the aluminum/glass seam bothers me, and so I got a slim case and never looked back.

szx··on Visualizing Code to Fail Faster
Am I the only one who feels like the game demo was so awesome that it overshadowed some of the other parts of the presentation, parts that were just as interesting yet probably more feasible? I would kill to have just the algorithm evaluator part become reality.

szx··on Tuning out: How brains benefit from meditation
Theoretically, the goal is simply to avoid the knee jerk reaction. Accept the reality as what it is, then figure out what you want to (and can) do about it - rather than succumb to your animal instincts.

As for why these Buddhists put up with the dictatorship, you'd have to ask them... Keep in mind different people interpret Buddhism (and meditation) very differently.
