sys32768··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Has anyone else noticed human drivers becoming more aggressive and causing more accidents than ever?

I thought it was because my smaller town was overrun after COVID by transplants, but I'm hearing similar complaints from other places I was considering relocating to.

Perhaps the solution will be robocars where, if there's a potential road rage scenario, the passengers can duke it out in a VR headset session.

sys32768··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Tragically this won't be the last time AI kills a lot of innocent people.
sys32768··on Claude Opus 5.5
Fable and now Opus 5.5 won't answer my college student's prompt about Alzheimer's and immune response.

ChatGPT 6 Pro answered it without issue.

sys32768··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
Fable 5.1 refuses to answer my college student's prompt about Alzheimer's and immunology.

It always downgrades to Opus 4.8 because apparently solving Alzheimer's should be left to big pharma?

sys32768··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
My Dell rep quoted me $736 for a single 16GB RDIMM for the newer Dell Pro 16 laptop, which retails at its baseline configuration with 16GB for ~$1000.
sys32768··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Pre-ACA, I could afford family insurance. My family premiums went up ~$500 a month post-ACA, while the coverage worsened.

My afib ER trip three years ago cost me $7k out of pocket even though I left the hospital still in afib.

Today in my 50s, my deductible is now $8,500. My partner doesn't have insurance because she's not poor enough or rich enough.

We had an insurance rep come to my work last year who said after ACA they had some people whose premiums went up 900%.

So yeah, ACA is better in your world, but not in mine.

sys32768··on Glaciers on the Climate Dashboard
George Bird Grinnell, the "Father of Glacier National Park", made a final visit to his namesake Grinnell glacier in 1926 and then wrote in his diary [1]:

>"the glacier is melting very fast and the amount of water coming from it is great. All these glaciers are receding rapidly and after a time will disappear."

sys32768··on Greenland issues "strong warning" as American oil firm illegally drills wells
Please fix the inflammatory clickbait title to the actual Guardian headline:

Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drill

sys32768··on Midlife Vascular Risk Burden and Dementia-Free Survival Years
Nope.

I have one APOE4.

Her mother didn't get Alzheimer's until her mid-80s.

sys32768··on Midlife Vascular Risk Burden and Dementia-Free Survival Years
It's mostly luck and genetics, but good sleep matters.

My mother died from Alzheimer's at 77 but wrote down her symptoms as early as 60, a full six years before her diagnosis.

Prior to her diagnosis, she walked her dog two miles a day, had an ideal weight, ate organic, never drank or smoke, used her brain constantly, and enjoyed a happy social life.

The only problem I saw with her was she was a very light sleeper.

Her aunt also died from Alzheimer's and was super healthy when diagnosed too.

Meanwhile the 103-year-old lady at my mother's former care facility is still sharp as a tack and reads daily without needing glasses.

sys32768··on FBI arrests CIA official with $40M in gold bars in his home

sys32768··on Chuck Norris has died
To be fair, you probably have some views some people think are pretty awful.
sys32768··on US- and Greek-owned tankers ablaze after Iran claims 'underwater drone' strike
An Iraqi security source said they think it was an Iranian boat rigged with explosives.

If Iran does have underwater explosive drones, why would they boast about it and invite attacks upon that weapon and its deployment systems?

sys32768··on Roblox is minting teen millionaires
My youngest has played Roblox half her life, but is very angry about recent decisions like requiring ID to chat in-game.

Still, if she's anything like other players, she's spent countless hours playing some of the most mindless Roblox games, and we've spent a few $100 on Robux gift cards over the years.

sys32768··on Anthropic drops flagship safety pledge
Google: "Don't be evil." Alphabet: "Do the right thing." Anthropic: "Do the thing which seems right to you at the time--at speed."
sys32768··on Platforms bend over backward to help DHS censor ICE critics, advocates say
The Censorship-Industrial Complex is troubling no matter which party benefits.
sys32768··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
On the Apple TV interface on my Roku, I can't tell which movie thumbnail I'm on because their UI just slightly enlarges the image which I can't really make out from my couch.

I always wonder who makes these decisions and whether they fancy themselves a designer.

sys32768··on Amazon's Spending on 'Melania' Is a Barely Concealed Bribe
Amazon burned $250M just for the rights to produce the goofy and embarrassing "Rings of Power" series. I wonder who was bribed in that deal?

Here's a CNN segment from 2016 about ICE enforcing in Chicago, without the spin we see today, yet essentially the same operations:

Many on the right who had Obama Derangement Syndrome didn't know how well Obama's administration enforced federal immigration law.

sys32768··on TikTok users can't upload anti-ICE videos. The company blames tech issues
Glitch or not, anything that helps get people off TikTok and hopefully off their phones is a good thing.
sys32768··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Some please write a web plugin to use AI to analyze comments so we can filter partisan comments and only read the truly engaging and intelligent comments by more objective people.

sys32768··on Ask HN: Why did forum culture die?
I keep a forum going that's been up since 2007 for hobbyists. I keep it going because of the priceless historical information on it, not the present quality of discussion.

My sense is that people have become less literate, less polite, and less patient.

Again, this is for a simple hobby so there aren't necessarily many intellectuals in this hobby, but 10+ years ago we had many lively, intelligent, long discussions.

What happens is you start getting more and more users who barge in, hijack threads, and do not contribute anything useful.

They can also be abrasive, which spooks the old timers from prior generations who were used to intelligent, polite discussion where they agree to disagree.

Eventually the quality content thins out, and there's a sort of Reddit effect where you get one solid reply for every ten useless ones.

These days I find most of the new users are just looking to find out what their collection is worth.

As those new users fill up screen space with vacuous content, the old timers are fading away either through attrition or illness or death.

On the technical side, you're constantly battling bots because your domain age and reputation is targeted by spammers.
