Unfortunately it seems to have lost momentum.
I very much look forward to the author's follow up post at the end of 2020 to see if another 5k turns into 200.
The other point is whether the flagging is legit, or being influenced by special interests. If the same X number of users were flagging everything related to Y, there is no way to know under the current system.
Edit: Just pointing out that doomsday predictions about population growth have been consistently wrong for the last 100 years.
Why not freeze and hide the accounts instead of deleting? I.e. don't push any tweets to them, or anything else computationally intensive. Then when they log in again, have them click a button to "catch up." Probably not as profitable as annoying a lot of surprised users who try and log in after Dec 12...
In other words, exercise cuts 11-22% of calories on the low end, and only 6-11% on the splurge day.
(And, ideally, the ability to play them on the computer.)
There was a recent post showing the version control history of HN article tiles. That's one step in the right direction.
