swinnipeg··on Those Who Can Do, Can’t Teach
Who are the great quarterbacks that have struggled at coaching?

My best guess is that the spoils of being a great quarterback are so great, and the retirement job offers are so lucrative that they simply don't want to take the steps required to learn to coach.

For example a pretty good QB turned great coach like Jim Harbaugh took a job as an assistant coach Western Kentucky after he retired, and subsequently moved up the coaching ladder. I struggle to see a great QB taking a road like that when they have so many other options.

swinnipeg··on SF Restaurants Can’t Afford Waiters. So They’re Putting Diners to Work
This is common in the USA at fast food (McDonalds..etc) and fast casual (Chipotle...etc) restaurants.

It is rare for a place that sells their cheapest 250ml glass of wine for $13USD to operate this way.

But likely this was just chosen as a restaurant to fit the discussion of certain types of labour being priced out of SF.

swinnipeg··on No Exit: Dementia Village Dwellers Live in Alternate Reality
Looks like a great way to allow some dignity and independence in ones final years. Would of loved this for my late grandfather or grandfather-in-law.

The alternative I have seen is a locked down area of a nursing home. They are segmented from the rest of the nursing home residents as they can be trusted with the same freedoms. All bets are off once a dementia patient exits the front door.

This also seems like a far nicer place to visit a relative suffering from dementia.

swinnipeg··on After Google bought Nest, it removed company’s biggest competitors from results
Vivint is more of an ADT competitor. They are a security/automation company with monthly fee model.

It is clear they have spent alot of money buying links from their profile, but so has ADT.

A more fitting question would be why ADT hasn't also been penalized.

swinnipeg··on Delphi – why won't it die? (2013)
Was once in a similar situation myself. One path is to identify a future customer pain point that will occur if they continue to use Delphi. You can direct the solution to a language/platform you wish to learn, and work like a dog to develop the new skills and build a great piece of software in this new language.
swinnipeg··on Why I Wrote PGP (1999)
My go to is something along the lines of:

You disapprove of mandatory cavity searches before air travel or entering a school? Sounds you are a drug dealer.

swinnipeg··on Work versus Life. Greatness versus Family
Not the biggest Jack Welch fan, but I think his quote on work life balance is most accurate:

"There's no such thing as work-life balance, there are work-life choices, and you make them, and they have consequences."

You don't need to rationalize spending more time with your family and less at work or vice-versa, just be honest about the consequences of it.

I worked a ton before I had a family, 7 days a week, always online. Now that I have scaled back I do accomplish less work, and I am 100% ok with that. My choice is more time with my wife and kids, and slightly less money (and alot less chance of a big $$ windfall), but I couldn't be happier.

swinnipeg··on YC S13 Top beautiful websites
What makes these designs work? Do they?

I am no design expert, but these sites look like they could of been "top theme downloads" on a WP Theme site.

swinnipeg··on Signs You’re in a Dead-End Job
5 years experience is very different than 1 year of experience repeated 5 times.

Many positions aren't designed for growth, and you really need to ask your self if you have been growing professionally when in that position. You risk losing whatever edge you once had.

IMO having side projects (with some sort of attached business goal) / and some contracting is a great option if you aren't ready to leave a job that is going nowhere.

swinnipeg··on Malcolm Gladwell's Reponse to the Culturalism Post
How does your ad hominem attack add to the discussion of this article?
swinnipeg··on Bose founder, Amar Bose, has died at 83
Don't overlook the Braun Atelier systems. Those products are art.
swinnipeg··on Stop Glorifying Hard Work and Long Hours
It doesn't need to end. It is "work life choice" not "work life balance.

Choosing to spend more of your time to a task will generally return a better results. Now choose your own adventure and determine where you want those results, friends/startup/employer/family/fitness or whatever else you value.

swinnipeg··on New York Lawmakers Set Aside Bill Threatening Tesla Sales
Rent Seeking exists in so many places.

"rent-seeking is an attempt to obtain economic rent by manipulating the social or political environment in which economic activities occur, rather than by creating new wealth"

A great side effect of popular companies like Tesla and Uber is the attention they bring to these practices.

swinnipeg··on How to know when someone is in trouble in the water
The absence of screaming and waving seems obvious after reading it, I realize I am really am conditioned to think if people aren't screaming...etc they aren't in trouble.

That said there is definitely some lifeguard propaganda in the article (who knew such a thing existed?):

"From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.”

swinnipeg··on What to expect in SEO in the coming months [video]
Penguin opened the world to scalable negative SEO. This is now a common tactic in competitive markets. If you rank well it is worth worrying about.
swinnipeg··on What to expect in SEO in the coming months [video]
Hacked sites are a dominant strategy is many markets right now. Perp will Hack N sites, cloak them so only the googlebot sees the hacks, and use those links to drive rankings of a site in a highly liquid market place (Pharma, gambling, payday, insurance).

When google can't devalue hacked/cloaked links well, I expect much collateral damage with Penguin (since it has primarily been focused on low value links). It won't be a precision attack on webspam.

swinnipeg··on "I can't do math" (2001)
I went through this exact issue with a junior employee moved to my team to do some analysis that required a basic understanding of medians/means and a little intro stats.

It took about 8 weeks of tasks with incremental mathematical challenges to overcome this, and at least reach the point where he could do his work, and apply the fundamentals learned to solving more complex problems.

In the end he "could do math", the real issue was he had never "put any work into math".

swinnipeg··on Poll: How much money have stock options brought you?
$0, had them with 2 different companies, both became worthless.
swinnipeg··on Meet Mr. Money Mustache, the man who retired at 30
You are throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Even if he had $0 in investment gains he would of been able to do this at 33-35 instead of 30.

swinnipeg··on Job hunting experience (and few advices)
You still spend 2 "unbillable" hours of your life if it is a phone call instead of a test.

And obviously there will be some costs to the company, the test didn't develop itself, and there is likely a developer reviewing the code after completion.

In this case the developer is in a different city, the test appears to be designed to see if it is worthwhile to bring him in for further interview.

swinnipeg··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
He means Fremont street in Las Vegas. The area surrounding it is largely populated by places to gamble and find bail bondsmen. Very un-Palo Alto.
