supperburg··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
The pandemic will truly end when therapeutics are mature. My liberal relatives become visibly upset when just the concept of therapeutics is brought up. Thanks liberal dogma/media…
supperburg··on How to design a house to last 1000 years
Yuck, colonial.

Here’s the best way to build a 1000 year house or a 10,000 year house: build a giant in-place concrete form with the following features: deep waffle grid foundation slab, rounded corners and arches everywhere, thick walls and of course tasteful layout of rooms and embossings. Lay out tons of carbon-fiber reinforcement and then fill the entire form in one monolithic pour with ultra high performance concrete. Attach a thick layer of rock wool to the outside with masonry screws.

supperburg··on Thousands of coma patients may be conscious
He did a ton of good things too. I would say the good outweighs the bad, especially since FSD has started to pan out in the past few months.
supperburg··on Japan's Paper Culture
I was shocked to read that the Netherlands has a private post service. How could the Dutch people ever have let that happen?
supperburg··on “The Matrix Resurrections” is an excellent movie
It’s incredible to see Lana be handed millions of dollars to make a film and they bomb every single time no matter how large or spectacular. They just keep giving her money. It’s amazing how she makes the same mistakes every time and never seems to learn or gain any self awareness. And it’s amazing to think it all began somehow with the greatest movie of all time.
supperburg··on The Sound of Silence: A Noise Map of the U.S.
I drove through Wyoming or someplace like that one time on a less traveled highway and stopped at a gas station. It was flat for as far as the eye could see in all directions and the utter silence that confronted me after stopping the car and getting out was jarring. Absolutely no sound. I remember pausing and taking note of it. Really made an impression on me.
supperburg··on Wish HN: Happy Holidays
1: how are hosting costs paid for?

2: how many people need to get hit by a bus to bring it down?

Yes, it is fragile and precarious and transient. Why would you delude yourself? I think your emotions are clouding your logical faculties. If Dan G got hit by a bus I know for a fact there is nobody who could replace him.

To serf

That’s a very elegant observation. When I imagine hacker news shutting down I can only think of the massive implications it would have for my life and I imagine feeling scared because it’s like a part of me is gone. It would be a massive thing and I’m not sure everyone like me realizes it. I’m working on a replacement now even if that’s insane and impossible.

supperburg··on Sen. Joe Manchin says he won't back $2T social spending bill
I don’t follow politics but I saw a guy called Charlemagne the god ask Kamala Harris who’s really the president, Biden or manchin. What does he mean by that and why does everyone care?

Create low pressure around the legs, they puff up with blood which means less blood in other parts of the body. If you need a demonstration then google “penis pump”
supperburg··on Marketing is scary for a solo developer
Actually none of that was a factor for the model s, x, roadster or really even the model 3. In both the former and latter case the viral popularity was fueled by the fact that the products were intrinsically good, although flawed, and filled a gap in their respective markets that was neglected by large corporations. The “Elon musk is just a marketing guru” thing is a super annoying misinformation spread by people who only started paying attention to Tesla and EVs in general after Elon musk became famous.
supperburg··on Marketing is scary for a solo developer
Minecraft had zero marketing. Tesla had zero marketing.

Anyway, if you wanted to market your product how would you even do that? Just buy ads on YouTube and google?

supperburg··on Window to the World
I was thinking about making a light-field window that somehow transports the light-field from one side of a wall to the other. Maybe with fiber optics. Window with insulation of a wall.
supperburg··on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter Account Gets Hacked
Because the way it’s implemented in 99% of cases is password reset uses your phone for validation. But that’s not true 2FA.

It’s a widespread lack of courage which I think afflicts many areas of the western world right now. Instead of making things right, everyone just says well if you lose your password then it’s ok, just do x y and z and you can reset your password. Never mind the fact that this completely ruins the whole point of passwords and 2FA. People aren’t brave enough to just confront the plain fact that in order to have security, you have to let your customers deal with the bitter consequences of losing their passwords. Instead of rightly putting the burden of managing passwords on the consumer, we treat them like children at the expense of sanity and order.

Just strong passwords and backup passwords is way stronger than 2FA anyway

supperburg··on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter Account Gets Hacked
I only say 2FA because every instance of being offered the choice to use 2FA in my experience was phone based. It’s by far the most common 2FA scheme — its very widely asserted that phone based 2FA is secure and it enrages me because it really isn’t.

But something like u2f as far as I can tell isn’t any better than memorizing a strong pass-phrase. It’s basically just moving the password manager to a computer that’s not connected to the internet. I guess it’s easier than memorizing.

supperburg··on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter Account Gets Hacked
So now instead of social engineering the government intern all they have to do is social engineer the phone company. It’s called sim swapping. 2FA is bullshit and doesn’t work in practice.
supperburg··on Antikythera Mechanism: An ancient 'computer' that 'shouldn't exist' [video]
There was a point in time where Ancient Rome had plumbed, running water. And there wouldn’t running water again for 2000 years later. I think people are obsessed with technology but in reality stability counts way more than anything else.
supperburg··on YouTube deleting comments who criticize their hiding of the dislike count
As a shallow person who likes shallow content, YouTube sucks. Their recommendations suck. They literally offer the same things over and over. There’s a billion videos and nothing to watch…
supperburg··on Google removes Pirate Bay domains from search results citing Dutch court order
Google search sucks, has demonstrated political bias through deliberate intervention and has become dominated by direct and indirect advertising. And now they are just removing shit.
supperburg··on Hayao Miyazaki prepares to cast one last spell
I’ve been watching these movies recently simply because they are so popular — I feel obligated to see them. I was bored by my neighbor totoro. But kikis delivery service absolutely blew me away and I would call it one of the best movies ever made. It astounded me. The story is perfectly paced and the characters mesh with each other, the setting and the story absolutely perfectly. It’s extremely beautiful visually. It should be mandatory viewing in the way that to kill a mockingbird is mandatory reading.
supperburg··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
Without any doubt both YouTube and google search have gotten way worse compared to ten years ago. It was crazy when I realized that I may have lived through a brief window in history when search was at its historical peak before being corrupted by politics and money or whatever it is that’s caused this change.
supperburg··on Tiny
Can anyone say how much it costs a founder to go through the process of being propositioned and then either rejecting the suitor or be rejected by them?
supperburg··on Ask HN: Jaded about the internet?
I also feel like the illusion of variety has been broken for me. I feel like it’s always the same kind of person who you find on any forum regardless of the topic — a power user who is on the spectrum and socially awkward and not very smart in certain areas of life. I used to come across a comment and wonder what kind of person wrote it but now I feel like I kind of know who wrote it and the internet has become a lot less mystical and useful since. The parts of the internet where non-spectrum people hang out have all the same problems of exclusion that the real world has for me. It’s all pointing to the fact that the internet hasn’t really changed anything fundamental like we were all led to believe by the hype.
supperburg··on Autism affects the microbiome, not the other way around
The micro biome is lauded everywhere and considered as the last great frontier of medicine which will solve all human ailments. There is barely any disease that is not regarded as being potentially caused by the micro biome. It’s all complete horse shit.
supperburg··on No, the real inflation rate isn’t 15 percent
I was listening to NPR in the car today and they were talking about inflation. They always talk about inflation now. But it confuses me because isn’t inflation supposed to be the increase of price of everything due to something other than practical, on-the-ground market problems? Things cost more right now because of supply chain problems, low interest and high demand. When lumber became super expensive, that wasn’t inflation. If it was inflation, how could you explain that resin-based wood was more expensive than natural wood? You can’t, because the resin plants were hit hard by covid.

I think NPR insists on the inflation thing because they are liberals and recognizing the real cause of these high prices would mean admitting that the lockdowns were way more dangerous economically than they thought and that people against lockdowns actually had a point if a morbid one.

supperburg··on To be energy-efficient, brains predict their perceptions
The brain is a prediction machine largely. How is it possible that you can experience a lucid dream where every sensation and interaction is as real as real life? It’s because your consciousness lives inside a simulation. When you’re awake, your brain uses sensory input to populate the simulation. But when you’re asleep it populates it itself. When you’re awake, your brain doesn’t scan every square inch of the real world looking for things to populate the simulation; it scans sparsely looking for key indicators and then guesses the rest. It’s an optimization for time and energy. Most of the things you experience are guesses. And when you’re asleep this guessing is all that you’re seeing. Dreams are just the guessing machine.

There are scattered reports of lucid dreamers who take benzodiazepines. They can’t escape their dreams. They simply wake up into the dream again if they die. Everyone reported it as being terrifying. Some reported that their reality checks stopped working; double taking at a watch didn’t change the position of the hands. The world became frighteningly real. It’s likely that the guessing machine you experience during a normal dream is not operating at full capacity.

It explains everything. How people swear on their life that they saw something, ordinary or extraordinary, that couldn’t be explained by a trick of light on the eyes or anything else. It explains dreams of course and other realistic hallucinations had by schizophrenics or drug users. The simulation doesn’t just deal with the physical world, it deals with abstract things like the “presence” of a person or entity. It’s all haywire simulation.

This idea that synapses are a part of an energy optimization is fascinating. It is widely speculated that inflammation has to do with schizophrenia, and inflammation is also involved in metabolic interference. African sleeping sickness for example is a purely inflammatory disease that causes people to run out of energy and fall asleep. Perhaps schizophrenia is some kind of metabolic knob being turned down by an inflammation signal which then results in the progressive shutting down of synapses as a way to conserve energy…

supperburg··on Ask HN: Messed up my education, now 30 and regretting it. What to do?
The only reason to get a degree is to get a job that pays more.
supperburg··on People with 1 dose J&J will be considered unvaxxed from Jan 3rd 2022 in Austria
I got one dose of JJ and i was feeling so sick that it was difficult to stand up for two days. The idea of doing that routinely is insane to me.
supperburg··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
This is terrible. The dislikes are often a source of ground truth and sometimes even comfort. Like when Gillette created an advertising campaign that promoted the idea of male original sin, the idea that men are intrinsically bad. Seeing that video in the wild might make you feel crazy but seeing that I was not alone in how I felt about that commercial made me feel like I wasn’t crazy.
