sumo89··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
If you want a recommendation I really like Merrell Agility Peak's or for something less run-y, the Moab.
sumo89··on London's Free Roof Terraces
Same with the "affordable housing" criteria of new build housing developments. They'll accidentally forget to build the affordable part then get a slap on the wrist afterwards, or build much fewer than were in the plans, or build whatever they want then apply to regularisation afterwards.
sumo89··on Identify a London Underground Line just by listening to it
I'd put bets on yours being the Jubilee line then, that loud whine is etched into my soul. One thing this couldn't capture for the Central line is the sheer volume of it.
sumo89··on Typing and Keyboards
Yeah same, even after years of gaming I still prefer laptop style short travel keys. Slim mechanical are good but still not quite the same. The official apple separate keyboards are my favourite but currently I use a keychron k1.
sumo89··on How the Turner twins are mythbusting modern technical apparel
If you start doing longer rides you learn there are general temperature ranges and kit that's fine to commute in or ride an hour in traffic with a rucksack is very different from the kit you want on a 6 hour ride in the countryside. I generally have kit for 0-10, 10-15, 15-22, 22+°C. My 0-10 jersey will boil me alive after an hour cycling in 13°C but likewise my 10-15°C will risk hypothermia in 8°C. There's only so much layering you can do with cycling kit before it starts becoming restrictive.
sumo89··on Mac external displays for designers and developers, part 2 (2022)
Actual display recommendations aside I would have loved this article years ago when trying to explain to designers why a font on one device may not look the same on another device, even if it's the same font-family and pixel height, especially when they're all using Macs.
sumo89··on The Xkcd thing, now interactive
The shark biting the cable is what gets me
sumo89··on What I Learned After Building 3 TV Apps Coming from Mobile
As someone that used to work on a TV app I wasn't surprised when focus issues were the first thing mentioned. It sounds trivial but it takes a surprising amount of testing and bug fixing to get it right.
sumo89··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Popular as in populous as in numerical
sumo89··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Yeah it's just the kernel anti-cheat now which is keeping me on windows. I'm fully ready to swap to linux but unfortunately I do like to play games that need it.
sumo89··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I recently built a windows PC again for gaming. Haven't used one for years. Everything's fresh, loads of room on hard drives etc and still sometimes it'll just be weird and needs a reset. But it doesn't surprise me, it's sad we've come to tolerate that from the world's most popular OS.
sumo89··on New gel restores dental enamel and could revolutionise tooth repair
Huh? If this was an article from a commercial entity selling a product we'd be calling it a marketing puff piece and asking for the science.
sumo89··on Wasp Blower
More like "Wasp Wood Chipper"
sumo89··on Chezmoi introduces ban on LLM-generated contributions
Or arguably that's the point. If you Copilot generate a few lines of code or use it for inspiration you're still paying attention to it and are aware of what it's doing. The actual outcome will be indistinguishable from the code you hand wrote so it's fine. What policies like this do is stop someone generating whole pages at once, run it with minimal testing then chuck it into the code base forever.
sumo89··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
Maybe read some of the stories of the cyclists like Pantani doing blood doping. They would have to wake up every few hours through the night and do some cycling on a stationary bike to get their heart rate up or their heart might stop while they're asleep due to their blood being too thick. Sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber to boost the mitochondria is childs play in comparison.
sumo89··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
Yeah I meant viewership, tv coverage etc.
sumo89··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
It's the most tested sport by far. Mostly because a couple of huge scandals - Festina and Armstrong. It's an endurance sport which is a natural target for doping because of the huge gains that can be made and it's also probably the most popular endurance sport too. That said, it's a problem in other sports but they just don't test as much or publicise it as much. It's become a real problem in Rugby, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/50785122 and in Football where they hardly test anyone https://warrenmenezes.substack.com/p/doping-and-english-foot...
sumo89··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
Except in cyclocross you swap bikes constantly during the race so the current one can be cleaned of mud before it blocks the wheels from spinning.
sumo89··on Open letter accuses BBC board member of having a conflict of interest on Gaza
Oh look the Israeli tech workers are online. Everyone knows it's a genocide. "Gaza victim narrative", the absolute state of you.
sumo89··on Show HN: I made a running app that turns your runs to a virtual garden
I was thinking something like those idle phone games with a virtual garden that gets more plants the more time you've logged.
sumo89··on Withnail and I (2001)
"We've gone on holiday by mistake" is forever in my head.
sumo89··on I was a Theranos whistleblower. Here's what I think Elizabeth Holmes is up to
> That’s a ridiculous theory

Yeah she's not even a Fox News host yet. She needs to be on TV for at least a couple of years before Trump gives her a job.

sumo89··on The gem Apple discontinued: the 11-inch MacBook Air (2019)
This is what I learnt to develop on. Yes I could have done with some more screen real estate but this thing never skipped a beat. I wasn't exactly running LLMs with it but multiple local servers, lots of files open at once, lots of chrome tabs, it handled it all silently. Eventually I got my first job as a dev and got too used to a 15'' screen with 2 desk monitors and struggled to go back to it.
sumo89··on Does or did COBOL default to 1875-05-20 for corrupt or missing dates?
And there's no punishment for being wrong. Even a newspaper has to publish official apologies, not that anyone bothers to read them. He could say the sky is red on that platform and there's nothing anyone could do to force him to change it or admit he's wrong.
sumo89··on The year I didn't survive
There's an unavoidable amount of guilt. I should be remembering them more, I should be honouring them by keeping them in my thoughts, but I can't think about them 24/7 and now I feel guilty that I'm doing them a disservice. The callous answer is life goes on and you need to go on with it. The friendlier answer is you have to give yourself permission to live for yourself, thinking about them only some of the time is still keeping their memory alive. It can help to have a representation, be it a specific day like their birthday you assign to their memory or a physical item. I lost a parent when I was a teenager, it turned my world upside down, I found what helped was having a thing as dedication to them. It let me compartmentalise the emotion to that object and gave me permission to not think about them all the time because they're being remembered by that item existing. It's not easy but does get easier, ultimately just be kind to yourself. It's not a quick process.
sumo89··on Make Your Own Website: A beginner's guide
It's the same reason I always recommend people to start with CodeAcademy if they want to start learning web dev. The interactive, live preview is perfect and the UI is nice enough to outsiders. There are other sites with preview boxes but they look very code-y. Once they can see how setting a background colour or adding a new <p> works in real time it helps the beginning of understanding.
sumo89··on Amazon says developers spend 'just one hour per day' on actual coding
How nice of them to identify a problem and offer their paid solution in the same article.
sumo89··on Every board game rulebook is awful [pdf]
Over simplification can be ok but they need to provide an in depth faq after wards. I've got too many board games where the actions per turn are easy enough to understand, you get 3/4 of the way through then someone asks if this action means this token is generated again and you spend the next 20 minutes looking through the rules and the internet to find an answer. Give me a simple step by step of a turn but also give me a huge list of faqs that we can reference during the game.
sumo89··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Rough maths. 70 mil votes for Tump out of 260 mil 18+ people in the USA, that's about 27%. Around 21% of US adults are functionally illiterate. There's a lot of idiots out there. https://www.crossrivertherapy.com/research/literacy-statisti....
sumo89··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Absolutely. This comment section shows it as good as any. HN used to be about intellectual curiosity, now you get people complaining about pronouns.
