sumeeta··on Web Design Trends 2010
I was expecting some mention of CSS text shadows.
sumeeta··on The browser desktop, developer tools
More of my tools in the browser would really be great for iPad.
sumeeta··on Quasi-cranks
It’s this way for anyone who’s good or bad at anything.

If you’re not good, you’ll be confused and clumsily try to get the results you want. If you’re good, you actually understand what you’re doing and make deliberate strokes.

sumeeta··on Thoughts on Horses
Ford’s My Life and Work for Kindle is free: http://www.amazon.com/My-Life-and-Work-ebook/dp/B000JQUSUW
sumeeta··on Great Set of Sequence Diagrams Explaining HTTP over TCP/IP
The web caching diagrams were super informative.
sumeeta··on HN Members' Workspaces
What kind of boat? Pictures would be nice.
sumeeta··on Thoughts on Flash
3.3.1 is an issue for developers. No Flash is actually a super huge deal for users.

I think one of the main reasons they published this was so they could respond to “iPhone doesn’t even have Flash.”

sumeeta··on Wget is looking for a maintainer
cURL ignores the filename header, but Wget actually gets it right by default.
sumeeta··on My how far you have come, Apple.
The ad makes me think more about (and appreciate) Steve Jobs the individual rather than the Apple brand.
sumeeta··on Tools To Add Some Spice To Your UNIX Shell Scripts
I think it’s easy to get stuck thinking you have to use bash and the UNIX utilities for sysadmin tasks.

Automating some more complicated stuff is just a pain in the ass to write and maintain if you just use bash, sed, awk, grep and friends. Free your mind and don’t be afraid to pull out Perl, Ruby or Python and apply liberally.

sumeeta··on Mac OS X SSD tweaks
Is there really a serious issue in the way OS X handles SSDs?

I think I want to replace my MacBook’s hard disk with an SSD, but I’m afraid of having to spend hours rigging out the best configuration. Do you have to play with settings if you order a Mac from Apple with an SSD pre-installed?

It seems like if I want to just plug an SSD in and get on with my life, I’ll have to wait for an OS X update. Unless this is all just PC-ricer talk that’s safe to ignore…

sumeeta··on iPad bug interfering with Princeton's network
iPad (that is, iPhone OS) could be better at setting the time. I was completely unaware I had to do that until I tried using the App Store. I wasn't prompted to enter the time when I first started the device, the time didn't synchronize with iTunes and there doesn't seem to be support for synchronizing with Internet time servers.

Maybe they overlooked this because iPhone gets the time from mobile networks?

sumeeta··on A new Google Docs
So these are the results of the EtherPad acquisition?
sumeeta··on Flask: a micro web framework for Python
Since it’s by the same author, this is probably inspired by or related to Armin’s April Fools’ Python micro web framework:

Denied: Python Micro-Framework (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1237412)

April 1st Post Mortem (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1239438)

sumeeta··on Ask HN: What do you do with your iPad?
Which keyboard do you use for taking notes?
sumeeta··on Mytechne: a site to record the history of programming langauges you've used
I wanted to enter my data, but doing that seems like too much work. Way too much clicking and page jumping, and then it looks like I have to fill in dates too that I’m not sure I can pull out at the top of my head. I think the UI for that could be a lot better and can fit on one page.

I’m down with the idea, though.

sumeeta··on Mytechne: a site to record the history of programming langauges you've used
jtauber: Have you thought of cool things to do with the data?
sumeeta··on A 2.5 Year-Old Has A First Encounter with An iPad
I kept thinking to myself, ”I’m not sure I see the scholastic value in that game; it’s so easy to cheat!”
sumeeta··on A 2.5 Year-Old Has A First Encounter with An iPad
How about a similar experiment about 20 years ago? Has anyone watched a young child try to navigate a command prompt? I mean changing directories, and maybe eventually learning a basic understanding of the filesystem and what files are.

I always tell people I learned how to navigate MS-DOS when I was five from watching my cousin do it. I wanted to get on the computer and play games, and I just remembered what he’d typed. I actually have no idea how true this memory is. But I wonder if CLI can feel just as natural to young children.

sumeeta··on Show HN: I just hacked together an app to map broadband speeds.
I wish it would’ve zoomed in and opened my entry after I submitted. Kinda fun, though.
sumeeta··on IPad review
> I've yet to see the blue lego block.

I think Flash content is just blank on iPad.

sumeeta··on Curl vs Wget
Wget seems to be better at naming saved files:

`curl -O http://host/my%20file.txt` annoyingly saves to `my%20file.txt` while `wget http://host/my%20file.txt` will save to `my file.txt`.

sumeeta··on IPad screenshots make this thing seem less like a giant iPhone
Example?
sumeeta··on Couchdb Clustering
I know the CouchDB team said they were taking steps to make CouchDB officially usable as a distributed system. Is this it? Or has this chapter been around for a long time?
sumeeta··on Why most people don't like jazz
I don’t like that you’re drawing a line between talent and education.

I would probably arrogantly classify myself as someone with a “good ear” but because of my experiences with different music and musicians. I often say people think too much when they listen to music when they need to just take it in. But if I didn’t have the same exposure to the music world, I know I wouldn’t be able to do that.

I’m sure the same thing applies to anything you can call art.

sumeeta··on Why most people don't like jazz
I think the author was trying to draw a line between poetry / words and music / tones. I do agree that it doesn’t seem correct to blame culture (or blame anything).
sumeeta··on Hg and Git : Can't we all just get along? (PyCon Presentation)
”Salt Lake City merges.”

Merges with more than one parent.

sumeeta··on Experimental Gmail IMAP interface using oAuth
Any obvious use cases for this? (Gmail IMAP or federated login outside the web browser)

Research for their operating systems?

sumeeta··on Ask HN: Where did you go to college?
Boston University

Why?

sumeeta··on ManPacks.com - a different kind of startup
Beautiful. The site really made me feel like this is something I need.

I’m also confused about whether it's `Manpack` or `ManPack`; I see both. I recommend you stick to one.
