sufiyan··on Computer scientists invent an efficient new way to count
Let’s prove it by contradiction: Lets say you pick the larger ones and drop the smaller ones every single round, you have lost the probabilistic guarantee of 1/2^k that the authors show because the most frequent words will be the lost frequent in subsequent rounds as well. This is the intuition, the math might be more illuminating.
sufiyan··on Intel prepares for $100B spending spree across four US states
Although I am rooting for Intel, the leadership is just not an execution machine. Pat is a very good CEO, and he understands technology as much as the business. But the next level simply doesn’t have that charisma to deliver. I wouldn’t be surprised to see many delays and eventually a product which is years behind competition.
sufiyan··on Toward the Decipherment of Harappan (2022)
Exactly. Considering that Brahui is a Dravidian language, I always wondered how can regions so disjointed (Pakistan and South India separated by at least a few thousands of kilometres) have a common origin.
sufiyan··on Immune cells fighting cancer get exhausted within hours of encountering tumors
Is there some way to induce a cytokine storm of sorts so that this weakening is essentially reduced
sufiyan··on The microarchitectures that I saw and the ones that I hope to one day see [pdf]
I don’t get it. If security is so important, then it should be okay to sacrifice performance. Why is there such inertia in accepting this? If security is all that is needed, get an in order completely non speculative core with no branch prediction (you can’t even run your side channels in this case efficiently)
sufiyan··on Dominion Voting Systems and Fox reach last-minute settlement
Wow the guys in the newsroom didn’t believe what they were saying and still said it. If there was a word for journalistic non-integrity, I’m searching for it now.
sufiyan··on Ask HN: How do I start feeling secure financially as a tech worker?
Get a higher paying job. While that is harder said than done, the process of preparing for such a job search, could keep you prepared for the worst should it come.
sufiyan··on Apple AMX instruction set (M1/M2 matrix coprocessor)
I don’t get why other chip manufacturers don’t go this same route. For example AVX is done on the same core that also supports integer math. Many companies have a separate GPU but AVX seems to always come prepackaged.
sufiyan··on Tesla’s Dojo Microarchitecture
This was the case when Google launched their TPU as well. Look where they are now
sufiyan··on I tricked myself into working out 3 times per week
I have always found myself more engrossed and wanting to run if I have a great podcast series or a great audiobook to listen to. Lately haven’t been getting any good recommendations and feeling like it is a chore to run.

Maybe having a bet like this with my sister who is also trying to become more active might help.

sufiyan··on Ask HN: Which parental action increased your happiness and success as an adult?
My parents would talk about their struggles growing up without any money.

My mother who was orphaned at a very young age and was raised by her grand mother would tell us about how she would have to erase their books and turn over their school uniforms and restitch them when they got faded when a new school year began because they couldn’t afford new clothes or books. My uncle who was all of 8 months when my grand parents passed away, had to struggle to make his school fees. Yet they have done well simply because of their perseverance and hard work. When I think about it, luck must have played a role but they still worked very hard to make their lives and their kids lives better.

My father would tell me about the time when they couldn’t afford to buy milk for me as a kid. And his cousin who was many years his senior asked him if he had any savings and when they answered in the negative, implored him to start.

These 2 things have always been my guiding lights. Very recently I have started losing interest in everything that is happening around me due to life circumstances. And writing these things has truly helped me understand where I’m from and what I need to do. Thank you OP

sufiyan··on The sky-high cost of returning to the office
As someone from India, this is far more acceptable than the alternative. Folks around my age just got married before or during the pandemic and as most of us had moved back home (people travel to Bangalore to work although there are decent options in other places). However the strife that I see on a regular basis between my wife and my mother is itself enough to want me to leave and just get back to work. Add a kid to this and it is just a circus at home. I’m sure although I’ll spend a lot on relocating, it is worth it for the simple reason that it is lesser mental tension to keep people away from each other.
sufiyan··on Why is houseplant advice so bad?
Yes you are right in that I have a dedicated place for them.

You could try using water sprays instead.

sufiyan··on Why is houseplant advice so bad?
Something I learned to do is to only water the leaves (ie make them wet). And if the soil is very dry, to pour water directly to the roots.

My reasoning being that rain unless it is heavy, doesn't actually reach the soil directly and then there is the matter of water coming out through the openings in the pot if there is too much of it.

I don't know why this works for me.

sufiyan··on 20K Workers Will Be Jobless in Indian IT Sector, Thanks to Infosys and Cognizant
The Indian government gives them contracts. A lot of big Indian companies also get droves of them to do repetitive work with no visible path of career progression
sufiyan··on 20K Workers Will Be Jobless in Indian IT Sector, Thanks to Infosys and Cognizant
Nah.. That's how much they get paid. The consulting company will charge about 5-10x for this resource though. (source from a friend who was there)
sufiyan··on AMD is having its day
You really need to look a little more at Jim and his style. He has been around from the time of DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation). And has been a great engineer. But what sets him apart is not his technical competence, but his ability to organise great teams around him and get the work done. And he has always been the person who has been given the reins of companies in crisis. It is a marvel how he manages to get the product back up.
sufiyan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2019)
So, there are 2 teams. 1 is in traditional computer architecture (OoO, Branch prediction, memory, prefetchers etc) and the other is in AI/ML accelerators. If you have AI/ML software engineering experience, I would encourage you to apply for the AI/ ML team.
sufiyan··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2019)

sufiyan··on Why Aren’t We Talking About LinkedIn?
So does that mean I can't ever discuss politics at work? Or on LinkedIn?
sufiyan··on How Much Water Do You Need to Drink?

sufiyan··on How and why CPUs do “branch prediction” (2017)
The newest one moved to TAGE
sufiyan··on Intel Process Technology Update: 10nm Server Products in 1H 2020, 7nm in 2021
Intels 10nm is nowhere as good as TSMC 7nm.
sufiyan··on Ask HN: What was your experience starting a tech consultancy?
Where do you find the good ones? Mostly LinkedIn? Reaching out on Hacker News?
sufiyan··on Ask HN: What was your experience starting a tech consultancy?
Wow. Now it makes sense. When I told my first client I wanted to increase rate after finishing a basic prototype (which was the full scope of the project), he ghosted and left me a bad review on Upwork. Well, all in the game..
sufiyan··on Intel Exiting 5G Modems
Optane will be seen as a really big main memory by the OS and that's it. So, I don't get why there will be severe changes in software..
sufiyan··on Intel VISA Exploit Gives Access to Computer’s Entire Data, Researchers Show
Test portions (debug architecture) are necessary for all chips. It is otherwise impossible to make sure what you have actually works as you intend.

sufiyan··on RIOT: Operating System for the Internet of Things
Having used both contiki and riot, I found contiki (NG) very good with supporting more devices and peripherals and much easier to integrate and work with. Riot is difficult in that half the times their tutorials themselves didn't work and there was no support online (this was about a year back and maybe it is better now).

I really prefer contiki ng

sufiyan··on RIOT: Operating System for the Internet of Things
You might say it is becoming riotous
