sufehmi··on Nvidia's Crazy New Neural Engine Is Redefining Realism in Graphics
Sorry I've read the last paragraph multiple times, but still couldn't figure out whether you're saying that id Tech is the best, or the worst...?

I think you're saying that id Tech engine, even the old ones, are the best by a long shot; but some words in that paragraph seem to contradict that.

And despite being a fan of John Carmack's works, I understand that the Unreal engines have its own advantages.

sufehmi··on How to Subvert a Democracy, Stage 2: Condition the Masses
The easiest way to subvert democracy is by

(1) creating political parties, then

(2) claim that its party members represent the people, while

(3) they actually represent its political party, and therefore, of course, prioritize its interests.

In my country, every major oligarchs have its own / is a member of a political party.

So our "Council of People's Representatives" actually works as "Council of Party's Representative" - and therefore work very diligently to fight for the interests of our oligarchs.

And yet no one is upset, not even our "democracy activists" - because they're already conditioned / believe that, political parties are a requirement for a proper democracy.

Nope, they're not - and they're actually the way to subvert democracy, and enabled the oligarchs to create massive profits AND control the people at the same time.

sufehmi··on Heroku has been running a second copy of my scheduler instance
Clearly the author still hasn't learned his lesson: his "no more vendor lock" solution is another vendor(s) - which is always able to vendor-lock him, again.

It is truly mind blowing on how many people keep falling for one of the oldest trick in IT : vendor lock-in.

===

No more vendor lock In 2018 Heroku was pretty much the only option for a newbie like me to get started with web-development. The landscape is very different now with providers like Render, Railway, and more

sufehmi··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
::: MIC ::: too often I heard people in Zoom / Teams / Meet sounded so bad, at times I couldn't hear what they're saying.

Cheap gaming microphones, like my HyperX Solocast, is massive change from those. It's probably the best bang for the buck of all other accessories that I bought so far.

::: NOISE-CANCELLING USB MIC DONGLE ::: sometimes my work environment can be very noisy and nothing I can do about it. In those cases I plug my mic into Asus Noise Canceling adapter - and instantly all the noises are gone: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Noise-Canceling-Artificial-Intel...

At $35, it's an absolute steal.

Unfortunately it only accepts 3.5 mm jack as input - so no joy for the USB mics.

::: EARPHONE ::: when I'm mobile or need to use my Asus Noise Canceling dongle above - I use Apple Earpods.

It's light, it's very comfortable inside my ear for prolonged periods, it sounds amazing, even better than some of my expensive wireless headphones, and it include mic as well, a good quality one too.

At $16, it's a steal: https://www.amazon.com/Apple-EarPods-3-5mm-Headphone-Plug/dp...

::: WEBCAM ::: at first I was like the others, and use Logitech's webcam.

Soon I found out that even its most expensive one suffer from stupid AF (autofocus) problem - it kept making my face out of focus at random times, it's so embarrassing.

So after checking many reviews; I bought Nexigo N60 - and I still can't believe a webcam this cheap actually produces better picture than my previous more expensive webcam, wow. And no more stupid AF. And it works straight away in Linux.

It also claim to have noise-canceling mic, but I haven't tested it yet.

https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-NexiGo-Computer-110-degree...

::: PORTRAIT MONITOR ::: I bought a cheap HP E190i monitor - which can be turned into a portrait monitor.

Suddenly editing documents, Terminal/SSH, etc become much, much more comfortable.

::: Ultrawide Screen Monitor ::: it's a game changer - bought LG ultrawide monitor, and it's so comfortable.

I can put 2 portrait document side-by-side, and quickly compare them, or reference from each other, etc.

Not to mention editing those wide spreadsheets is becoming so much more bearable now.

It's also so much nicer watching movie and playing games using it.

::: GAS-SPRING MONITOR MOUNT::: use it to mount the ultrawide monitor above ; and it's even more comfortably positioned + frees up so much desk space.

::: VACUUM-COOLER ::: my brand-new laptop used to suddenly slowed down to a crawl at times, not only puzzling but of course also, very, frustrating.

Turned out it's unable to expel heat efficiently. Damn this thin laptops.

So I plugged a vacuum cooler on its exhaust port - and instantly it no longer throttled the CPU at random times, yay.

It's now able to consistently run at its peak frequency.

When gaming though it still overheats. I've bought a Carbonaut pad, from Thermal Grizzly. It's supposed to conduct heat about 5 times better than a thermal paste, so hopefully it'll help.

sufehmi··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I used to own the original 3M gaming mouse pad.

It felt amazing, just a bliss to use everyday. Sturdy, it was abused everyday yet showed no sign of any damage. It just works - it does not move from its place, felt rock solid, yet very thin. It always looks clean; they say that there are microscopic ridges designed to trap dirt etc, so it stays clean, yet cleanable.

Small things - but everything adds up, making it the superior mousepad.

I have yet to find a mousepad capable of all those.

Sadly lost it when I moved abroad.

Your comment made me remember this - so I looked around. Turned out now there's 3M Precise mouse pad - however, there are quite some negative comments. Too bad.

Tried to look for that old 3M mousepad instead - no luck so far. Sigh.

Currently using a hard metallic mousepad, it's almost as good, except that it looks dirty rather quickly.

sufehmi··on Managers, stop distracting employees
All the good managers I've ever encountered have the same skill:

They ask smart questions.

====

At the beginning, they try to understand the situation by asking the very dumb questions - but they're not shy about it.

They'll say, "Let me pick your brain", "Sorry I'm an idiot, so let me ask this dumb question" - and so on.

No ego.

But in no time, their questions will become smarter.

Coupled with their big picture view / perspective, their understanding of the system and the business - they quickly became a very helpful assistant for us to understand the problem, and in many cases, even able to suggest the, best, solution.

=====

Bad managers gives no added value, and instead distract you from your job.

Any senior management should understand these, and should be able to pick the good ones.

Otherwise the company/institution will be mired with persistent problems in no time.

sufehmi··on South Korea has the lowest fertility rate, with lessons for us all
Families are already struggling when only the father is working. Work is hard for the father, and raising kids is even harder for the mother.

Now both father and mother must have a job - and that's just to barely survive.

And the government expect us to have kids? Fucking idiotic pricks.

Unless the government start doing something to ensure that all of those shiny GDPs are trickling down, instead of ever continuously pooled up, the situation will only get worse.

sufehmi··on Sued by Meta, Freenom halts domain registrations
Interesting, I thought for stuff like these - you just need to complain to ICANN.

Very interesting to see that Meta feel that it needs to go to court for this. Does this mean that ICANN is broken / does not have the capability to properly take care of these things?

sufehmi··on Effects of Latent Toxoplasmosis on Political Beliefs and Values
It actually happened in Indonesia - people died en masse in their homes, died in hospital's front yards, hospital's hallway, etc ; too many got infected, that the healthcare system simply unable to keep up. We even experienced severe medical oxygen shortage for months.

The only reason they didn't die on the streets was because we're under lockdown at the moment. So instead dying on the streets, they died indoors.

sufehmi··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
That's so good to hear. Very well done to everyone involved.
sufehmi··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I wasn't talking about the product - I was talking about MS using the product to lock the whole world into its own =proprietary= format (so no one could reliably open & process it - and then others got blamed for it, not Microsoft), AND then aggressively attack those who try to escape from its lock, even countries.
sufehmi··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
Been there done that since the era of Powerbooks - and it always causes my laptop's battery to deplete much faster.

Because I'm using my laptop to, well, work on the go a lot; this is a showstopper.

sufehmi··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
"And it runs Office better than Linux or Mac"

Yup, been doing that for decades. It's called "vendor lock-in". And its unethicality has been discussed comprehensively for decades as well.

And when countries tried to move into an open document format - they'll bully the country, using the strong arm of the Uncle Sam, until they're back to MS Office again.

So when people are amazed by Bill Gates' charities - I don't. His money comes from the sufferings of countries.

sufehmi··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
"it's literally unix, man"

Yup, it's NOT Linux.

Been using MacOSX since Powerbook up to first gen Macbook - and I finally gave up: I installed Linux on it instead.

Pretty much all servers are running Linux even back then. Using Unix on work computer/laptop causes way too many encounters with various quirks and glitches. It continuously drags down your productivity too many times everyday.

After much stress, I installed Linux on my Macbook instead - but then I encountered various hardware-related glitches instead.

So I finally gave up, and bought a Thinkpad.

Still gaming on AMD FX-6350 (3C/6T), paired with Nvidia GTX 1060 3GB. Kids are playing the latest MMO with no complain.

I'm still surprised myself whenever I realized this. I did buy it with the intention of using it for as long as possible, but 10 years is beyond even my expectation.

sufehmi··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
I bought my car new about $ 12,000 - then a few weeks ago got problem with its automatic transmission, and do you know how much it's gonna cost me?

$ 7,600

I never heard such thing with cars with manual transmission.

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
POP3 always fail when you have so much emails: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30485039

IMAP only download the index - everytime you click on an email, it'll then download it. When you have 150K emails, then you need to click on all that emails 150K times.

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
OK I found out a feature in Thunderbird called "Offline Work" - it seems to cause it to download the whole emails.

Currently giving this a try, fingers crossed.

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
This is interesting - will give this a try. Thanks !
sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
I was trying to create a script which will create a backup of my whole Google Drive. Let's see if I can find it.
sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
Thanks guys - but I'd like to have my own copy of my emails.

Been bitten by SaaS in the past. Currently in the process of having my own local backup of all SaaS.

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
IMAP just download the index, not the content.

When you click on an email - then it'll download that email. Attachment is also probably you have to click it too.

That's just not feasible when you (turned out to have) nearly 150 K emails in your Gmail account.

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
Then there's the issue of the email client - I'm using Linux. I heard Thunderbird is a mess.

Sylpheed is so old.

Claws email is supposed to be better - but everytime after downloading email, it will lock up for a long time, while it's going through the filters.

With 120 thousand emails, and need for GUI / modern email client, it seems my options are ather limited.

Thinking of using Eudora with Wine.

Any ideas?

sufehmi··on Google Users Locked Out After 15 Years' Use (2020)
Honest question - how do you guys move away from Gmail?

I've been trying, twice, to download my (120 thousands of) email from Gmail. Both failed.

It'll download only about 500 emails per download, then I have to stop for like 10 minutes. Otherwise Gmail will block it.

Even then it'll still fail - after days of downloading, suddenly it'd only download the newest emails.

Any hints?

sufehmi··on Ask HN: I am not a competitive guy, how will it affect my career?
I have never believed in all-or-nothing / aggressive competition. I believe that a win-win situation for everyone is always possible.

That's why I never spend any time in things like sports competition (despite having the talent for it), etc.

I've created communities and foundations, but found that my true strength lies at being "the engine", not the leader / celebrity.

An "engine" is hidden away, not visible - but it's the one that's actually make everything works.

I enjoy staying behind the scenes, connecting with people, encouraging & motivating them, work together, developing strategic partnerships - and leave the stage for others more talented for it.

I helped advocate and assist leaders, but I don't want the spotlight because of its various burdens.

In an IT team, I help people work together, smooth any wrinkles, help my colleagues, discuss strategic targets with my boss and help the team to focus on it, etc. I talked with users, note their concerns, and help raise it internally in my team.

I started as a lowly junior programmer - but rose so quickly I suddenly ended up as Head of IT. I quit soon, because it's putting me in the spotlight; this makes a lot of things suddenly political and involves a lot more drama than necessary.

I just want to have fun, not encountering drama queens everyday.

So yes, it is possible to be not competitive and be successful anyway.
