subatomic··on Microsoft’s purchase of GitHub leaves some scientists uneasy
So will Nature be comfortable with having scientists cross publishing on GitHub in the name of "Open Science"?
subatomic··on Evidence that drinking baking soda can promote an anti-inflammatory environment
NFI FTI?
subatomic··on Are My Friends Really My Friends?
I think you're proving the point OP was making. In the past you found people by proximity, as, not so long ago, there was no online.
subatomic··on Building a $30k/Month User Testing Service – Askable Co-Founder Interview
Bloke, surely?
subatomic··on Reinforcement Learning – Bandit Problems
I was heavily into reinforcement learning around the turn of the century, and at the time, "Reinforcement Learning - An introduction" (Barto and Sutton) https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/reinforcement-learning was an absolute goldmine for me getting started. I think parts of it are online somewhere including all their pseudocode and solutions.

subatomic··on The Amiga Consciousness
I highly recommend the documentary "From Bedrooms to Billions: The Amiga Years" http://www.frombedroomstobillions.com/amiga

The significance of the architecture and Jay Miners brilliance in system design cannot be underestimated.

subatomic··on Show HN: Subform, a UI layout tool
I don't understand the downvoting going on here. Even if you don't agree with the comment, it's still a valid point.
subatomic··on What Made Lisp Different (2002)
Clojure has clojars: https://clojars.org/
subatomic··on Vue.js vs. React: what happened in 2017
Not sure about the inspiring talks or whatnot, but I've been writing clojure/clojurescript (reagent, re-frame et al.) professionally for a couple of years and there's nothing I can't find that I need in a project. With simple js interoperability, native use of js/react components in reagent and ease of wrapping any vanilla js library, there really is nothing you can't do with clojurescript. You should take a closer look!
subatomic··on Why we never thank open source maintainers
If you mean something like contribution guidelines, then they're everywhere. Here's one of mine as an example: https://github.com/benhowell/react-grid-gallery/blob/master/...
subatomic··on A Man Who Has Lived Alone on an Island for 28 Years
That would be Ed Stafford https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Stafford . He has many TV series where he survives starting with nothing (other than camera gear) and some other shows. Probably the most entertaining, down-to-earth and genuine survivalists on tv.
subatomic··on Cost Effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
> That aside, you have to work a little bit harder to discern religious practices that are rooted in activities that are observably and directly beneficial to individuals and society (meditation, compassion)

Leaving meditation out of this, I think the religious practices you're implying were basic human moral practices adopted _by_ religion, not the other way around.

subatomic··on Joseph Campbell’s daily routine for “the most important period of my study”
> I think many of us have deployed this graph in our own lives. I watch movies this way - watch more movies made by a director I like. Then watch movies by the people this director likes. Its a wonderful exploration.

I use https://www.metal-archives.com in this manner. The number of dimensions on which you can find connections and similarities makes finding new music a joy. A version of IMDB based upon the ideas in MA is what you seek.

subatomic··on Lost Laughs in Leisure Suit Larry
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the text adventure documentary "Get Lamp", so I will. http://www.getlamp.com/
subatomic··on DigitalOcean Intermittent NYC2 Connectivity Issues
I've been struggling all week with issues from nyc3 spaces (object storage). I haven't been able to get any explanation or confirmation of my issues although I have submitted a lot of information at each of their requests.

I hope these problems are temporary and the reliability improves very soon because I feel like I've wasted this week beta testing a flaky product. I might be small-fry but I need to spend my time wisely.

Having said that, I've got my fingers crossed because this sure as hell beats the pricing of AWS S3 and It'd be nice to host app and objects under the same umbrella.

subatomic··on Request for Education Startups
Different etymology though. Grundies <- Reg Grundy's <- Undies <- Underpants.

> However, achieving such a milestone will require you to (on an ongoing basis) look deeply inwards, answer fundamental questions about yourself, and change your life.

> most people haven't even figured out what they want and so they default to mainstream consumerism

Not everyone defaults to mainstream consumerism. Some of us just don't understand and cannot comprehend why others are such consumers. Keeping up with the Joneses? Why?

For my family at least, we require no deep inward analysis, fundamental questions about ourselves or changing of our lives. To sum up: this is just how we are.

subatomic··on Annual note to self: most of the world exists outside the tech bubble
> i'm sure there are some people are responsible enough to never incur a finance charge from a credit card by always paying their monthly balance. I've never actually met one of those people.

Hi, I'm one of those people. Nice to meet you!

We use our (no fee) credit card for everything we can and pay it off at the end of the month. Initially we did this to allow as much of our own money, for the longest possible time to sit in our mortgage. We've never paid a cent in charges, fees or penalties.

You can save incredible amounts over the years just by shifting the time at which your money sits where.

subatomic··on How to Interview Engineers
It appears what they're alluding to is this part: > the appointments conflict just when b > c and a > d.

which I first understood to be a conversational statement rather than a statement of logic (which I assume GP is referring to), in which case it should be (b > c or a > d).

subatomic··on Monash University trigger warning policy fires up free speech debate

subatomic··on Programmers are confessing their sins to protest a broken job interview process
For 99% of situations in normal software dev, just being able to find X in collection is enough.
subatomic··on Why Shitty Products Survive and Thrive
In the same vein, I have various org-mode files that I can switch buffer to whenever a thought needs to be noted. org-twbs outputs a nice html rendering with a couple of keystrokes.
subatomic··on How Following Others Will Leave You Broke
Just doesn't compute. We live in what the author would call a high income neighbourhood but that's because we wanted to live walking/bike distance to everything, which turns out to be a pretty frugal way to live. We have an old beater for a car and have never had any intention of trying to keep up with the rest of the street/neighbourhood. We see a lot of fancy around the place but meh.

I really like your site too. I would like to see a slider so I can navigate the show and like the poster above, I'm not sure about the name.
