stygiansonic··on Popular Chinese-Made Drone Is Found to Have Security Weakness
Thanks for links to the primary sources!
stygiansonic··on Amazon Warehouse scam: 16TB HDD swapped for 8TB, returned for full refund
There are scammers who will buy the item, open the shrink wrap and remove the item before rewrapping it to make it look like they never opened it. This becomes more difficult if there are security seals.

The other story about this fellow where his contract was accidentally terminated or not renewed (linked to from this article) is just about as Kafkaesque as you can get:

stygiansonic··on Shell Productivity Tips and Tricks
Another vote for fish. I would say another benefit is that it has a reasonably great out of the box experience with little customization needed to get a lot of its benefits, eg awesome autocomplete.

The downsides have been mentioned, namely the lack of compatibility with shell scripts not written for it. In the same vein, until somewhat recently, operators like && did not work for it.

It’s still my daily shell, and I really only use something like bash when having to remote into a production server.

stygiansonic··on Seinfeld Adventure
For some some reason, this really reminded me of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders: https://www.gog.com/game/zak_mckracken_and_the_alien_mindben...

They really did well with the graphical style!

stygiansonic··on When U.S. air force discovered the flaw of averages (2016)
Great explanation. This is an example of the curse of dimensionality. An intuitive way to think about this is that each dimension you add is another “chance” for one of them to fall outside of the range.

Another way to think about it is the often-cited unit n-dimensional sphere. If you were to uniformly sample points from within this n-dimensional sphere, as n increased, the proportion of points lying near the surface of the sphere would increase.

stygiansonic··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
Nitpick: if 50% was the new 100% then the supercharge option would be to 200%, which sounds even better :)
stygiansonic··on Google to Slow Hiring for Rest of 2020
There may be more page views ("supply") right now, especially on certain types of social media, but I suspect that advertising demand has taken a huge hit.

Lots of companies out there, especially retail, are taking huge hits and I would suspect that an advertising budget is one of the first things to be reduced.

stygiansonic··on How Bird Laid Off 406 People in Two Minutes via Zoom
I found this rather disconcerting:

"A month earlier, someone in Bird's IT department had been tasked by his superiors to write a script that would allow the company to instantly shut down all of a user's accounts – computer, email, Slack – with the click of a single button, according to an employee. He was told the script would be used for general off-boarding rather than the mass layoff that he ended up being included in. Last Friday, the script seems to have been activated early."

stygiansonic··on California governor issues statewide 'stay at home' order
Thanks for all the references. I also couldn't find any explicit guidance around "outdoor exercise" that was as clear as the SF order.

I do also agree that the video you reference implies that the CA-wide order allows the same sorts of things (Newsom references "walking your dog") but hopefully there is more explicit guidance.

stygiansonic··on Aerosol and surface stability of SARS-CoV-2 compared to SARS-CoV-1 [pdf]
Aside: this paper demonstrates an interesting use of Bayesian regression to get the full posterior distribution over plausible decay rates rather than just a single point estimate. See the last few pages.

Is this pretty normal in these sorts of papers?

stygiansonic··on Microsoft recommends WA and CA employees work from home
Thanks for the explanations everyone. I was confused because the title at [0] says "Kurt DelBene’s March 4 guidance to King County employees", but Bay Area is only mentioned in one of the headings. Thanks for the clarifications.

stygiansonic··on Microsoft recommends WA and CA employees work from home
Where does it say CA employees? Does Bay Area in the context of Puget Sound mean SF Bay Area?
stygiansonic··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime
It’s a colloquialism, like Moore’s law.
stygiansonic··on Safari will no longer trust certs valid for more than 13 months
I understand the reasons behind wanting to shorten certificate validity periods, but CA or root certificates often have expiration periods far into the future. What’s the argument for this? Ease of use? Historical reasons?

The thing is, if they bench too many workers, they will also be ridiculed: https://www.networkworld.com/article/2920903/google-really-k...

In fact, this action is probably part of a conscious effort to move away from "benching".

stygiansonic··on Google cuts jobs at cloud-computing group
This is correct. In many jurisdictions, when a certain number of employees are laid off in a given amount of time, they are required to disclose this to the government.

For example, California has the WARN act: https://www.shouselaw.com/employment/warn-act.html

stygiansonic··on Dogs poop in alignment with Earth’s magnetic field, study finds (2014)
You seem to be under the impression that a study like this gives a hard "yes/no" answer as to whether some hypothesis is true. That is not the case, nor is it ever the case with most studies like these. Instead, you need to do some sort of statistical hypothesis test.

As other comments have pointed out, once you start testing multiple hypothesis on the same dataset, you cannot apply the same significance threshold that you would if you had just begun with a single hypothesis before observing the data. Instead, you need to apply some sort of correction that takes into account the number of hypothesis being tested:

stygiansonic··on Tech salaries are risk premiums
Does anyone know if there is any evidence that big tech salaries started going significantly up after this illegal agreement was ended? Intuitively it makes sense, but I am just wondering if there are any data or studies out there to prove or disprove this.
