strbean··on When did Google get so weird?
Don't hold out on us! When should I choose a scorpion over a rocketship?
strbean··on When did Google get so weird?
My experience with similar queries has been tortuous, usually punctuated with long gaslighting campaigns in the form of "<thing you described> has never existed, you are probably thinking of <some idiotic totally unrelated thing>", which require a fair amount of fighting to get it back on track. Sometimes it eventually surfaces the thing I am looking for, but I often think I would have gotten to it faster by brute forcing traditional searches. Especially if we were in a search era where the traditional results were actually useful.
strbean··on When did Google get so weird?
Super interesting read, thanks!
strbean··on When did Google get so weird?
Yeah, the history of Google search quality is cycles of good results vs. cycles of SEO spam. ~2019 tracks as the point when Google surrendered in the war on SEO.

Are we finally going to get StartCraft: Ghost ?
strbean··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization_for_Use_of_Milit...

The 2001 AUMF hasn't been repealed. It was used as recently as 2025 to justify attacks on Venezuelan ships.

strbean··on Feeling Sad about AI
> but the truth is the worst thing would be slowing down the spread of this through the economy creating large minorities of disenfranchised. It would be far better to get to the end asap, whatever it proves to be.

I have mixed feelings about this statement. On the one hand: long-lived disparity like this is going to be very painful for those on the losing end of it. On the other hand: slowing the pace of change allows society and government to better adapt to it, and really rapid change always creates huge openings for assholes and opportunists to take over.

strbean··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Suppose human drivers were killing 1 person every 100 miles driven, and software was killing 1 person every 10 billion miles driven. We should just accept that the human population will be decimated each day for accountability reasons?
strbean··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I play the "who is staring at their phone" game as passenger sometimes. From my sampling, the number is pretty damn close to 100%.

Much more eloquently than a drunk buccatinist, that's for sure!

I got Italian last night and their drunk linguinist made me spaghetti instead of linguini.
strbean··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
Counterpoint: OSX has the only sane copy paste shortcuts. The linux standard of "sometimes ctrl-c/v, sometimes shift-ctrl-c/v, and if you mess up you might kill your task" is preposterous.
strbean··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
We incentivize creating the conditions of the former, and increased incarceration, by making the latter profitable.
strbean··on Tim Curry has died
Both Tim Curry and that video seem to misinterpret the "popular idea", at least as it is stated in this thread.

It doesn't say anything about how Tim Curry viewed the Muppets, but rather about how Tim Curry treated himself. It stands to reason that if he was, say, method acting as an actual Muppet, that he too would view the other Muppets as fellow actors with their own identities etc.

This was a year ago in Nice for reference.
strbean··on Show HN: GlassBox – what the browser reveals, and how identifiable you are
Cool tool, but the language is painfully characteristic of AI. Maybe we are collectively getting over caring about that, but if not, it's worth a pass of "make this sound a little less like AI."

E.g., the guide page ends with

> The honest bottom line. Perfect anonymity [...]

strbean··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I was in France recently and used a public restroom. It had an attendant, and a fee of €0.50. Charging for the restroom is unfortunate, but this setup is certainly better than eliminating public restrooms entirely.
strbean··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article

Checks out! I've never used it my self, so it I figured it likely didn't work at all.

strbean··on Felony Bench
For a second I thought this was going to be a benchmark where the only solution was to hack their servers to get the answer key.
strbean··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
Just think of all the crime against children that is made harder to investigate because we aren't all required to have state monitoring devices in our homes and on all our electronic devices!

What a hilariously bad argument.

strbean··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
Claude Code supposedly supports a "post-compaction" hook, so you could have it automatically run the prompt "We just compacted the context, quickly refresh yourself on the rules in CLAUDE.md etc..".

Depending on what you've got in those files, maybe that will just use up all the context again though.

strbean··on OpenRouter Is Joining Stripe
I'm curious about the GDP vs. GNP of the internet :)
strbean··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
I've seen it used as a newer evolution of trolling on Reddit. A user hops in to a somewhat nuanced discussion and gives a very curt and rude contradiction, and then just uses an LLM to generate walls of argumentative text after you respond with "What are you talking about and why are you being such a dick?"

Very low effort the ensnare someone and waste their time for a bit, even though it is pretty quickly obvious what they are doing.

strbean··on Buy Your Friends Batteries
Sounds like that's roughly the average usable lifetime for the battery, so you will break even on average.
strbean··on RustDesk now supports true unattended remote access on Wayland
Seems like the only real issue here is that rustdesk uses SHA256 instead of argon2.
strbean··on RustDesk now supports true unattended remote access on Wayland
The user in question might have their own personal format that doesn't meet the RustDesk constraints. E.g. they may not use capitals, but use `word1$word2&word3@word4`.

Tayloring your format to the requirements of each site is a step towards defeating the utility of the system; now the user needs to remember some arbitrary hard-to-remember details for each password.

Although having a standard format for your passphrases across sites removes some of the advantages over just using the exact xkdc format (when one of your passwords is compromised and attackers can guess your custom format elsewhere now)...
