sto_hristo··on Have an old iPad lying around? You might be able to make it run Linux soon
I already explained it to you. Re-read the replies and try to comprehend them like the normal people did. You don't have to a software engineer to do so, as these things are pretty soft to assimilate.
sto_hristo··on Have an old iPad lying around? You might be able to make it run Linux soon
You're missing the point. It's about what you can with that hardware. If the world was limited to ProCreate only, then we wouldn't be having this discussion. But there's much more to be done on that hardware and the only thing standing in the way is the artificially crippled OS that is really a platform for advertisements.
sto_hristo··on Have an old iPad lying around? You might be able to make it run Linux soon
I expect an actual computing device, not a locked up console, which is what these things are.

A device running on a real OS, in the sense of an actual operating system - the thing that just controls hardware and runs whatever you throw at it, will be found even more useful by your partner as it will stretch far beyond ProCreate.

sto_hristo··on Have an old iPad lying around? You might be able to make it run Linux soon
Latest tablets rock some pretty spectacular hardware. It's so sad that the horrible OSes completely waste all that potential.

Why is it so much to ask for a tables with an open OS?

sto_hristo··on Java Has a New Website
And it doesn't allow you to select which java version to download.
sto_hristo··on Workers quitting over return-to-office policies
To judge the way the pandemic has been handled, you have to be an expert yourself. Because right now it's like telling a physicist how stupid his theory is while you're flipping his burger at BK. Sure, their theory may sound stupid to you, but that is your problem.

> frightening the daylights out of people

Yeah, infantilize the populations, shield them from reality, tell them "don't worry, Karen!" Virus will surely take notice and stop being so murderous.

sto_hristo··on Workers quitting over return-to-office policies
There is no silver lining and the next pandemic will play out raw, just like this one. Antivaxers will blame it on Bill Gate's son and 6G. That is because of human stupidity - it's immutable and ever present.

So my hope is that science will come up with better vaccines quickly and natural selection will trim off the Enlightened to a more tolerable level.

sto_hristo··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
I have the MX Master 3 and it's so close to perfection:

1) put the device swap button on easily accessible place along with the device led indicator (perhaps incorporated in the battery led indicator); 2) make it able to work directly via usb cable for redundancy.

That is all.

sto_hristo··on Now Monkeypox
Will you tell about the aliens and 5G again?
sto_hristo··on Ask HN: What developer tools would you like to see?
Some kind of vulnerability tracker for dependencies. You type `gradle somecommand` and it will walk the dependency graph, incl all transient ones, and show you which dependencies currently have an active vulnerability affecting them and the version that fixes it.
sto_hristo··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
> Why are you choosing a meaningless metric to decide on the technology?

Learn to express yourself better. It's like building a house - your first choice is what ground you build it on - quick sands, swamp, or solid rock. If you don't take power density into consideration you're not going to make the right choice and then all your efforts will be meaningless.

Denmark is almost 100% renewable (it imports some). France is 70% nuclear (net exporter). Denmark household pays 170.5% more than french household. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php...

Here's a lecture on nuclear economics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbeJIwF1pVY

sto_hristo··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
That is just politics speaking. Massively subsidizing renewables and smack talking nuclear is an easy pass to a political career. But reality is immutable - nuclear energy is without competition.

https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php...

Check the above. Denmark is 100% nuclear free (runs on mostly renewables but it imports), Germany i think runs on about 10% nuclear. France runs in 70% nuclear. The cost speaks for itself.

sto_hristo··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Considering power density meaningless puts you in direct confrontation with reality. In physics you can't create energy, you can only convert it. So from what you're converting from is the key consideration to take as that also determines the cost.

And while nuclear is expensive at first, its longevity and reliability pays for itself. As it's further developed, that initial tax will only be reduced.

As if you guys don't realize that this "renewable" stuff is pushed by a nuclear reaction that happened thousands of years ago in the core of a plasma ball that is 8 light minutes away? That is not efficient.

sto_hristo··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Sorry. Largest power density is still in the atom. Can't work your magic around this. The only reasonable and sane strategy is to R&D around nuclear. Whoever gets it right will rule, the others will be ruled. Not single bubble kept its integrity; renewables will burst as well.
sto_hristo··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
Actually that "modern tech" of yours is the subsidized one. President Obama was basically trumpeting how many new and awesome futuristic jobs those solar parks will create when the government unleashes the cash flood.

Nothing competes with nuclear. It's just pure physics - atom is the biggest source of energy on this planet according to current physics. Whoever can't agree with that reality fact should see a psychiatrist.

Despite all the obstacles, nuclear constantly develops and will continue to do so, because market.

Industries can't run on calculator batteries. Sorry.

sto_hristo··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
Have you tried Sony WF-1000XM4? I currently have them and have had 0 issues with them so far. Bluetooth connectivity is great and i regularly switch them between a linux laptop (used for meetings, slight media) and android phone (calls, music).
sto_hristo··on Go's Concurrency Examples in Java 19
I find it hard to be convinced to use GO at all. If i wanted efficiency, i'd bite and go with something close to the metal. If i wanted something that can build huge applications and has a rich framework ecosystem - i'd go with Java. GO seems like a middle solution for some exceptional cases, which i haven't deal with.

It is a fresh language and i quite enjoyed exploring it, but i just can't see the use of it. (also, the multiple return value functions are great, but if only there was a way to use a particular value directly from the function without having to assign them to variables)

sto_hristo··on 90% of software engineering done today is integrating poorly documented APIs
... to 0% documented enterprise applications. But, you know, it's "clean code", right?
sto_hristo··on Qualcomm’s M1-class laptop chips will be ready for PCs in “late 2023”
You're a niche. But if linux fixes the 10^10^10^10 different distros problem and gets an awesome desktop environment that large companies can confidently program against knowing that all linux users will be covered, then everything else will pretty much disappear overnight.
sto_hristo··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
And you can count on one hand the guys responsible for this right now. It's crazy to think that some guy with mental issues, just within a month or two, triggered a massive militarization.
sto_hristo··on Emmanuel Macron is re-elected French President, defeating Marine Le Pen
Stalin was pretty Hitler-y. He also had nukes. Shit didn't go down.

Not saying we're in sunshine and lollipops land, free of total annihilation, but things have to get really, really extreme for this happen. Sure, Putin may be clinically retarded enough to believe in his fantasies, but do you really think his buddies will walk the walk to the end with him?

sto_hristo··on Emmanuel Macron is re-elected French President, defeating Marine Le Pen
In nature there are no guarantees. Eventually you're going to trip and fall. Point is not to trip and fall all the time and recover quickly. That is just how it is. People will eventually pick their French Trump, then get sober, then revert back to someone normal (but hopefully not ancient years old and with the balls to fix problem directly).
sto_hristo··on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Upgraded to it via do-release-upgrade -d and for the most part it went smooth. I had to reinstall pulseaudio and some bluetooth connection profiles as wireless headphones completely broke - they would connect twice in a row with failing audio (thus reinstall pulseaudio), then at some point, they wouldn't connect at all (thus reinstall bluetooth connection profile).

Previous upgrades didn't had such problems. This with the KDE desktop on a desktop machine running old Ryzen.

sto_hristo··on Nearly half of Mariupol has suffered grave damage
But if you just looked the Putin in the eye. You'd found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. You would have had a very good dialogue. You'd be able to get a sense of his soul; a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country.

Putin didn't sprung up from nothing. He was nurtured and cared for by all western leaders. He's that disease you did nothing for for so long. And now you're complaining? That is like a cop blaming the victim for what a criminal did to them.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
I'm actually on the fence for something like this. Waiting to hear about cooling capabilities of the upcoming Dell XPS 15 though.

In this case, instead of laptop i'm thinking of tablet with a big screen instead.

sto_hristo··on Even mild Covid-19 can cause your brain to shrink
Do you have anything in concrete to share with us or you simply like the clicky sounds your keyboard makes?
sto_hristo··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
My latest job is like that - from home with just a laptop. I used it as a secondary monitor (chat, email). At end of day i simply close it and turn on the desktop.
sto_hristo··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
Remote to your desktop from your laptop and never worry about losing/breaking the laptop. I've spent little over a year on a job where i remote desktop'd to office computer from home in a WFH scenario. Was perfectly doable and stable.

In this way you won't need the laptop at all and can use a nice tablet. I'm thinking of going this way, but not quite there yet.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Would you buy a modern Toshiba Libretto?
I'm on the fence. On one side, those dell xps' are ultra compact and cover all my coding needs, but the price/performance ratio is absurd. And i'm thinking of why not simply get a powerful desktop and a tablet. And if i'm in the forest and need to do work while being chased by bears, i can simply remote desktop to the powerful PC and do the job.

It's obvious that you can't have the best of both worlds in a single package, but the latter option comes close to it with little compromise. And this compromise will become negligible if android becomes open and grants full access to the system so that you can actually compile and run whatever you want on it.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: What would you do with a million dollars today?
Unify mobile and desktop. Mobile hardware can run loads that required actual desktops 5-10 years in the past. For everyday use, especially office and productivity work, mobile hardware goes beyond capable.

But it's limited by the handicapped mobile platforms, who are nothing more than ad clients.

All it takes is to create an open (as in user has full access, no limits), responsive platform and current status quo will disappear overnight, nobody will look back. Same code running on your high-powered desktop and you "phone" or tablet, making no distinction between them other than to adapt to screen size. What programs you use on either device will solely depend on the actual program's resource requirements, nothing else.

Your AAA game will make no sense to be run on your phone (which can be attached to a screen), unless the game is engineered to scale to such low extremes. Your code editor, on the other hand, can be run wherever.
