sto_hristo··on D.C.-area startup wants to solve the public bathroom problem
First you have to know what you're actually up against. It's not a particular human behavior that is to blame, but stupidity itself. Some people are total morons and the behavior you're complaining against is merely a consequence of that. You can't defeat stupidity, it's a nature thing.

You can suppress it though. Public shaming, forced fines, get violent with them... All these things work to certain degree and will get you through the day. But again - you're not solving the problem, you're just suppressing. Stupidity is ultimately unsolvable, because nature; and that is why all those utopic dreams always fail with impressive death counts.

sto_hristo··on Tell HN: Banned site-wide from Reddit for helping a fellow mod fight hate speech
Anything social that tech enabled has become so toxic and damaging to normal f**ing human beings that i kinda wish governments step up and go full autocratic on these sites and services.

This stuff is 21st century digital bubonic plague. Revert life to the 90s and 80s snapshot.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: What technologies have made your life worse?
Restricted OS like Android. Awesome hardware has been dumbed down to a pathetic handheld console, turning you into a brainless ad clicking zombie.
sto_hristo··on Monkeypox declared global health emergency by WHO as cases surge
I wonder, is public WCs (like in the office) a potent vector for this disease?
sto_hristo··on Equals Raises $6.6M from David Sacks at Craft Ventures to Replace Excel
I've seen seemingly immortal tech giants die to the newcomer, but MS's office is just too ubiquitous and embedded everywhere. So even if there's a superior excel alternative, who would use it when they already have Excel along with tons of other office tools.
sto_hristo··on JCOF: JSON-like Compact Object Format
Thing about JSON is the ease of reading and writing it, regardless the size of the document. Compression deals with the rest.
sto_hristo··on Microsoft Joins Jakarta EE and MicroProfile Working Groups at Eclipse Foundation
I'm not sure what to make of this as .NET is "competitor" of Jakarta EE. In quotes, because who really would prefer that to Jakarta EE/Spring...
sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Has Marvel got out of hand?
Isn't everything produced for mass appeal algorithmic? They even have a tropes wiki. And i'd take that any day over the arthouse originals the Elevated folks spawn.

At the end it's economics that dictate what goes out hand or not.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Has Marvel got out of hand?
So you're an authority on adults and proper things to watch? Link me to the codex, must read it.
sto_hristo··on Data leak reveals how European politicians helped Uber
I wished Uber succeeded in my country. And by "succeeding" i mean being allowed to enter the market. Can't stand taxis.
sto_hristo··on 4th Gen KDE Slimbook – Linux Ultrabook with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U
Something like that but in the clothes of a XPS (but not as thin for the sake of thinness by sacrificing cooling). I'd eat it right away.
sto_hristo··on World’s Highest Website
This is something that even my Logi MX Master mouse is unable to handle.
sto_hristo··on Kubernetes is a red flag signalling premature optimisation
In a lot of cases it's pattern abuse. I'm dealing with this all the time. People like to split things that can work perfectly as one whole, just for the sake of splitting it.
sto_hristo··on Tell HN: Please stop making more DSLs
And to think that all the energy that went into creating so many new DSLs could have been directed to making even more linux distributions. Such shame.
sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Can you both take climate change seriously and against nuclear energy?
Renewables are no match and no substitution to nuclear energy. No matter how much investment you dump into renewables, their energy density will remain inferior and sooner or later you will hit a threshold where, like it not, you will switch to full nuclear, because calculator batteries can't power industries. Nature has nothing better to offer (according to our current knowledge of physics) and that is not an opinion, but pure reality.

People don't want to accept this fact in the same way flat earthers don't want to accept that Earth is spheroid. They want to live in their imaginary worlds simply because they're insane.

But, today, if we were all 100% nuclear, you still have to deal with the fact that battery tech is inadequate to replace fossil. I believe that once a miracle happens such that a superior battery magically becomes trivially available to anyone, demand for power and pure market forces will cut the throat of renewables and society will completely shift to nuclear.

sto_hristo··on DevOps is a failure
I simply quit a job with 2 months after they pinned devops duties in addition to software development. And i've yet to be proven that this can be done by a single person.
sto_hristo··on Who is going to replace Google for us?
The evolution you described happened only because the internet is freely accessible to anyone, anywhere, except if you're a communist. Reverting it back to some state you deem worthy is saying the internet was broken. Trying to nudge the Web into some direction you like is exactly the thing that will destroy the Web.

If you don't like subreddits, twitter, or the mass produced crap - avoid it and focus on what you like. The early internet stuff has not been banned and banished. Some if it has been forgotten, maybe, but nobody is going to go through the trouble of keeping a VHS store just to tickle your nostalgia.

I still can find a community to play Re-Volt with. That is only possible because of the internet and the way it is.

sto_hristo··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
Total nonsense. Chernobyl was covered up by the most brutal and inhumane regime ever. It's this exact cover up and lack of responsibility that disgusted a lot people and lead to the hatred and fear nuclear energy is drowning in.

There will always be cavemen that will fear what's beyond the cave exit, but they are powerless, albeit vocal, and are not responsible for the stagnation of nuclear research.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Do You Use RSS?
I use RSS and get all my HN digest (among others) from it, including your post.

I like it because it gives a very clean, simple interface to multiple sources and keeps track of what i've seen.

sto_hristo··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
That is so ironic.
sto_hristo··on I fucking hate Jira
I've seen absolutely ridiculous workflows on Jira. Things like - "i'm gonna make the most ridiculous workflow out of spite and boredom just to troll you."

From that perspective it's easy to hate it, but you hate the actual use of the tool not the tool itself.

Currently i enjoy more sane use of it. Simple workflow. You get in, read the ticket, clicky a button, get out. Slowness in that regard is very tolerable.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: Why are Git submodules so bad?
They have their uses and misuses. People misuse them a lot, get burned, they blame them, and then they hate them.

If you lack a dependency mgmt system, work mostly solo or in very small and tightly coordinated team and just need some githubbed project to make yours work, submodules may be the right tool for you.

sto_hristo··on Google engineer put on leave after saying AI chatbot has become sentient
Making sense out of things real or abstract has got to be way harder than driving. Faking sentience, on the other hand, is a neat trick with no value apart from 1 day of media fame.
sto_hristo··on Google engineer put on leave after saying AI chatbot has become sentient
AI still can't make cat from dog most of the time and fails at driving. And you're telling me it has become self-aware? It looks like a good chatbot with better training.
sto_hristo··on Vladimir Putin, in speech, hints at further territorial expansion for Russia
How far can Putin push the nuclear leverage until it's not leverage anymore?
sto_hristo··on Vladimir Putin, in speech, hints at further territorial expansion for Russia
Pre-WW1: USA was happily supporting allies in the their fight against Mr. Evil. But Mr. Evil sunk an American ship. WW1 started and soon after Mr. Evil died.

Pre-WW2: USA was happily supporting allies in the their fight against Mr. Evil. But Mr. Evil sunk an American ship. WW2 started and soon after Mr. Evil died.

Pre-WW3: It's where we are now. Can you skip the sinking of the ship detail and just go kill Mr. Evil so that life can continue normally? Please.

sto_hristo··on All software is web software now
Well, not all at all. But there is so much desktop software going on the web and that is a good thing. You don't have to install it to use it and it doesn't need the performance and native capability of the bare metal.
sto_hristo··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
That is normal. Even one of the best recent Presidents can "struggle" with interviews. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4bDuFJuriw This is the best speaker on the planet. On the planet. His bread and butter is pro-speaking actually. "Struggle" in quotes, because he's not struggling really, it's just how normal human beings speak as they are constructing answers in their brains.

But why on most of his others interviews he was going so smoothly and effortlessly? Because those were scripted and everything was predictable and prepared for in advance by a huge staff in the background. He already has all the answers in the brain and is merely giving a mental reading.

So ground yourself. You're not giving speeches and your interview is NOT going by a script you've been given prior. Relax, answer questions to the best of your ability and KNOW THAT you'll be judged most likely by people with skills inferior to yours.

Looking at other answers asking you to prepare for interview as if you're running for president. Sure thing. Do that. But only if you're actually running for president and there are millions on the table for the taking.

sto_hristo··on Ask HN: New job at BigCo. Everything has friction
That is what you get with already established projects and teams. And it's only the beginning; legacy code will follow, along with horrible styles and ancient practices, and it will be much worse.

That is why I love startups. I gotta find me a nice startup in need of a sr. full stack engineer with backend emphasis.

sto_hristo··on How San Francisco became a failed city
Sickening. Twisting normality like that has always ended up in annihilation as reality has proven to be quite immutable. Problem is that the process is quite slow in human-lifespan term so such people have to be endured for a while.
