stilist··on Data leak contains 26B records from numerous previous breaches
Nah, it's just a convention adopted from French after the Norman Conquest.
stilist··on Lowercase letters save data
You’d do it lowercase in van Goch’s name because it’s the correct way to write it for him. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tussenvoegsel
stilist··on The Hyperloop was always a scam
How is that his biggest problem? He has no impulse control, or no desire for it; he lies incessantly to further his interests; he's a horrible manager; etc.
stilist··on “Yes” means “no”: The language of VCs
You're looking at it backwards. White people get an automatic advantage because they're white. Any advantages given to minorities are an attempt to balance the game.
stilist··on NASA says SpaceX’s next Starship flight could test refueling tech
‘The future of mankind’ only rests on life beyond earth if everybody gives up on keeping earth livable. The biggest threat to humanity is humanity, and a colony on the moon or Mars isn’t going to fix that problem.
stilist··on That time Verisign typo-squatted all of .com and .net
See also ‘domain tasting’ (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_tasting), where registrars would temporarily register non-existent domains when someone attempted to load them, showing a ‘for sale’ page to skim extra money off registrations.
stilist··on GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in
My problem with code search is that when I’m searching I’ll randomly get dumped to github.com/search with the search blanked, and anything I put in the search box at that URL is ignored. I have to go back in my history until I’m in the normal GitHub UI again. My search has also been discarded there, but at least I can interact with it.
stilist··on [dead]
Yes. I flagged this because it's just Elon claiming something that's at best speculation.
stilist··on Results of technical investigations for Storm-0558 key acquisition
Yeah:

'After April 2021, when the key was leaked to the corporate environment in the crash dump, the Storm-0558 actor was able to successfully compromise a Microsoft engineer’s corporate account. This account had access to the debugging environment containing the crash dump which incorrectly contained the key.'

So either the attacker was already in the network and happened to find the dump while doing some kind of scanning that wasn't detected, or they knew to go after this specific person's account.

stilist··on Brave is a fork, not a Chromium reskin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich#Appointment_to_CE...
stilist··on An update on the Federal Reserve’s Instant Payments Service
I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen ‘an update on’ something that wasn’t an end-of-life announcement.
stilist··on On breaking changes in transitive dependencies
This seems like a case where Go’s ‘minimum version selection’ approach would have helped——Sidekiq would have continued using an older version of the dependency that didn’t have the breaking change.
stilist··on ES Modules Are Terrible
These days polyfills are seen as a bad practice, and instead people recommend ‘ponyfills’ that export the relevant functions but don’t monkeypatch.
stilist··on The Tyranny of Structurelessness (1970)
I don’t think it’s a very persuasive rebuttal. I infer that McQuinn is a libertarian, which explains the issue: it amounts to ‘well [as a white man who automatically has power in every social situation I encounter] I haven’t had any problems, unlike those weak-willed dorks’ and bad-faith implications that Freeman supports capitalist structure.
stilist··on Observable Plot 0.6.7 released: pointer interaction, tip mark
I’ve built lousy versions of these features multiple times, and I’m glad I won’t ever have to do it again.
stilist··on Whistleblower drops 100 GB of Tesla secrets to German news site
I’m sure that’s true, but the premise of giving the responsibility to a machine is that it will consistently outperform humans. There should be less evidence available for FSD critics.
stilist··on Whistleblower drops 100 GB of Tesla secrets to German news site
Is it actually better than a bad human driver? (And what’s your metric for ‘bad’ — tired, drunk, distracted, a teenager who just got their license but didn’t actually practice enough?) Because I’ve watched enough videos of people having to quickly override Full Self-Driving in ordinary situations that I’m really skeptical that it’s better than most drivers. I’d be willing to say that in practice FSD usage is small enough to not be a serious threat to public safety, but I haven’t seen evidence that it’s better than a human.
stilist··on Gilbert Strang's final lecture at MIT: May 15, 11:00am
If it’s something they’re interested in or need to know for their career, then I don’t think it’s possible to be ill-suited, only ill-prepared.
stilist··on Google Pixel Fold
The Live Translate video shows 'aqui' instead of 'aquí'. I don't know if that's an error the software actually makes, or if the person who composited the text into the video had the wrong spelling.
stilist··on Sam Altman says era of remote work is over
How does this claim interact with the claim that AI is going to eliminate tons of existing jobs?
stilist··on [dead]
This is just another anti–affirmative-action/anti-“woke” grievance campaign with the same the same “diversity reduces quality” claims, but framed as a health issue. The only notable aspect is this person had enough money, influence, and time to do something.

Mostly it’s a lot of alarmist rhetoric.

> Surely the radical activists never expected anyone to turn the administrative state against them, but that’s what we did. And it worked—even under the Biden administration.

stilist··on Are emergent abilities of large language models a mirage?
I have zero technical understanding of the math or statistics, but looking at the graphs it seems suspicious that supposed jumps happen across unrelated tasks and models at the same scales--for example, in figure 1, the discontinuities are consistently in the 10^22 to 10^24 range. Obviously I'm just going by what the authors have chosen to include, but I'd expect more variation. At best I'd assume it's something about LLMs in general.
stilist··on NPM repository flooded with 15,000 phishing packages
Would https://checkmarx.com/blog/how-npm-packages-were-used-to-spr... be a better URL? The current URL (https://www.scmagazine.com/analysis/devops/npm-repository-15...) seems like a summary of the original.
stilist··on EU adopts global minimum 15% tax on big business
I assumed it was a tax the EU applied to global business, not a globally-agreed tax the EU signed onto.
stilist··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Or maybe he’s just a jerk.
stilist··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
There's effectively no cost to do it now, though.
stilist··on How I Failed to Change Wasmer
If there's no public acknowledgement that the CEO ran an awful workplace, there's not much to stop him doing it again with another company.
stilist··on Solarwind, Fireeye, Microsoft and Cisco leaks are offered for sale
Sure, but at the time they were creating the mess they were actively opposed to open-source software.
stilist··on How to Gradually Exit Twitter
My heart breaks for this rich, powerful man who has found a place in life where he can’t just ignore things he doesn’t like. It’s an embarrassment to subject someone like him to what non-rich, non-powerful people experience.
stilist··on PostgreSQL 13 Beta 1 Released
An alternative, which I think I borrowed from how Heroku does/did dumps, is 'pg_dump --no-acl --no-owner'.
