Avid learner, I'm here to learn on HN.

stevofolife··on My life after quitting social media
> but I still had a part of my brain thinking about the missed opportunities in building value / wealth. Hm.

I think this was your main point right? I also feel the same, but not because of Twitter. I think Twitter is an amazing social platform but it takes certain type of people to succeed on it. I'm sure there are tons of people who are very smart and is making more or creating something cooler but not broadcasting it on Twitter. Maybe you are one of those people.

stevofolife··on ASML, a $300B Dutch firm, makes the machines that make semiconductors
Not “any” one inside TSMC know the company trade secrets. One of the reasons to why TSMC is ahead is due to the fact that many years of accumulated knowledge and experience is distilled into a few minds.
stevofolife··on Ask HN: What's the most life-changing blog post you've ever read?
Seems like mainstream folks tend to give credits of life wisdom to Buddhism and Stoicism but let’s not forget the Bible also mentioned the same in the book of Luke: “Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭17:33‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/114/luk.17.33.NKJV
stevofolife··on Illinois Is the First State to Have High Schools Teach News Literacy
smells like cognitive bias
stevofolife··on What Are Diffusion Models?
I also find Eugene Yan's less technical blog to be similarly fantastic. https://eugeneyan.com/
stevofolife··on Ask HN: Could downvoting be required to include a comment?
If it requires a comment to downvote, then it should be the same to upvote.
stevofolife··on GitHub Copilot: Your AI Pair Programmer
To be fair, it is still easier to lose a finger when you don't know much about a table saw.
stevofolife··on Regularization is all you need: simple neural nets can excel on tabular data
To piggy back on the topic of tabular data, has anyone experienced transfer learning on tabular data in their work or research?
stevofolife··on TikTok owner ByteDance sees its earnings double in 2020
You got it all wrong. You don't use TikTok for critical thinking. This product was never designed to be a critical thinking tool.
stevofolife··on As religious faith has declined, ideological intensity has risen
If that's case, I can hardly take Hinduism as a religion. If the burden is on an individual to discover and accept his/her own truths rather than blindly accepting beliefs, then isn't this the same as any secular belief system? Secular people also emphasize on one's own and discover truths themselves to make up of their own belief system.
stevofolife··on As religious faith has declined, ideological intensity has risen
That's a very shallow statement.

An isolated baby could derive simple math but also similarly deduce there is a greater entity out there.

stevofolife··on Why Can’t I Sleep?
Stress
stevofolife··on Clubhouse doesn’t value privacy, security or accessibility
Change for the better. Definitely not stupid.
stevofolife··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
I like the UI. I like the process. I'm just a basic guy who likes to put in basic numbers. What's next?
stevofolife··on A house 3D printed from raw earth
"In terms of housing the unhoused this doesn’t do anything"

"It doesn’t demonstrate a better solution to existing problems."

"They are bread or nothing."

And this guy starts off his reply with "The negativity is no more unwarranted than positivity."

Why do I always see these kind of comments on the top?

Does HN scrutinize everything based on the "practicality of things"? This article is multiple galaxy away from making such a claim. Why do people respond like the next million dollar housing solution is being advertised here?

stevofolife··on Semiconductors Demand 30% Above Supply, 20% Year-on-Year Growth
Of course, so important.
stevofolife··on 'Big Short' investor Michael Burry says 'prepare for inflation'
I thought interest rates and rate of inflation have an inverse relationship.
stevofolife··on Ask HN: How is GME not a pump-and-dump?
You're also missing the fact that these hedge funds are bleeding interest per day. So buying 20% only will not suffice.
stevofolife··on Show HN: Compare prices that US hospitals charge patients, insurance companies
Can someone explain why US medical costs are so absurd? Why is it the way it is?
stevofolife··on DALL·E: Creating Images from Text
Regulations. That's what the government is for. You think any country is going to let someone operate millions of drones at their will? Yeah ok.
stevofolife··on Introduction to Reinforcement Learning (2015)
No one said "new". You can apply what you said to PC and iPhones. Mainframes and palms existed before them.
stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Work is a function of people and problem solving. A balance between the two provides an effective and productive environment for producing good work. I wouldn't praise or idolize the notion that work is always about people.
stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Back then, Multics was designed to run on expensive and specialized proprietary hardware where as Unix could run on a variety of cheap computers.

One can say the philosophy behind Unix was new. I'm sure that's why modular and micro kernel designs caught on.

stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
No it's not. A formal computer science education at least mention and cover the problems these tools are solving. And for those who want to solve these challenges, they take graduate courses.
stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Tons: Cryptography, operating systems concepts including multi-threading, distributed systems, network communication, mobile and embedded systems which are basic backbones of all the things you use today. You know that's where majority of the tech companies are innovating on, right?
stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Word problem? That's not a technical challenge. That has to do with writing and communications, which are ubiquitous to all types of work.

I think you're misunderstanding the premise here.

stevofolife··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
Your work doesn't depend on operating systems, databases, network communications and data structures? I can go on.
stevofolife··on Show HN: After 10 years my side project has hit $8k/mo in revenue
May I ask, why did you guys wait until now to start marketing? Just curious about your decision.
stevofolife··on Earnestness
I think you misunderstood what earnest is. And more importantly the core of PG's argument.

A genuine fixation or being earnest != interest. Earnest is way more than that. Showing interest is merely a step towards being earnest.

It's easy to be interested in everything but it's hard to be earnest about something.

stevofolife··on Heavy is the Head that wears the AirPods Max
To listen to music. Duh
