stevofolife··on Binance fired employees who found $1.7B in crypto was sent to Iran
The article title doesn't say "Fired". The HN title is kind of misleading.
stevofolife··on Code is cheap. Show me the talk
Calculator don't tell you step by step. AI can.
stevofolife··on Show HN: I've been using AI to analyze every supplement on the market
I’d love to hear your domain expertise—specifically which supplements you’d recommend avoiding, which ones are generally worth taking, and whether there are any brands or products you trust. I imagine you’ve picked up a lot of insights beyond the technical side as well.

I think it will be nice if there is a summary of that somewhere on the website. It was the first thing I was looking for.

stevofolife··on State of Python 3.13 performance: Free-threading
Can you help me understand, if libraries like pandas and numpy also applies to your comment? Or are they truely optimized and you’re just referring to the standard Python language?
stevofolife··on How to keep up with AI/ML as a full stack dev?
Here’s the plan:

Run the following models:

- Speech-to-text - Text-to-text - Text-to-speech - Text-to-image - Image-to-text - Text-to-video - Video-to-text

Start by integrating third-party APIs, and later switch to open-source models.

Implement everything using your preferred backend language. After that, connect it to a frontend framework of your choice to create interactive interfaces.

You want use your own data? Put it in a database and connect it to your backend, and run these models on your database.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll have completed your full stack development training.

stevofolife··on Ask HN: How to use LLM to update app UI/UX dynamically?
From what point of view is it bad? Technical?
stevofolife··on Ask HN: How to use LLM to update app UI/UX dynamically?
Some that come in mind, both personally and corporately: 1) data analytic, insights, and visualization, 2) dashboards, 3) knowledge discovery and exploration, 4) education & learning, 5) games
stevofolife··on Employees who stay in companies longer than two years get paid 50% less (2014)
Sure you get paid more, but it comes attached with a whole baggage of other things.

A better research should provide insight on the total compensation over the entire career, work-life balance, impact, satisfaction and so on.

Now let's see what is better.

stevofolife··on How to build a $20B semiconductor fab
Downvotes help people skip the noise and focus on the signal. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.
stevofolife··on Daniel Dennett has died
I think what he means is that many of the seminal work related to cognitive science were produced back then. For example, Chomsky, Minsky, John Searle, David Chalmers and many more.

Things still move during winter, just not as much.

stevofolife··on Multiple Stability AI researchers are departing, CEO says
What step do most find the most challenging?

For me, it's the first step. It seems once you get started, everything else tends to fall into place more smoothly.

I'm eager to know others' perspectives.

stevofolife··on OpenAI – transformer debugger release
Elon had always advocated for a for-profit structure so that OpenAI can raise enough money to achieve its vision. In the email they are discussing how the for-profit structure could work. Nothing wrong with that especially when he was the GP.
stevofolife··on Launch HN: Retell AI (YC W24) – Conversational Speech API for Your LLM
I much rather talk to an AI bot than waiting on the line for a human for 50 minutes.
stevofolife··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
That's a wild statement to make about UN's unproductiveness in the history of its existence. I'd like some evidence please.
stevofolife··on The Apple Vision Pro
What is vaseline used for? Does Unilever promote vaseline the way you think Apple should promote their headsets?

Answer is no.

stevofolife··on The Apple Vision Pro
> This is not something that corporate America recognizes, and in fact, seems eager to censor and suppress.

Numerous American companies recognize this and are developing services and products tailored to your needs. The comment just above yours highlighted some of these companies.

However, Apple may not be the best-suited company to take action in this regard.

stevofolife··on Why Don't We Teach People How to Parent?
I don't think that how life really works? Also not trying to be a snide either.
stevofolife··on Why Don't We Teach People How to Parent?
That's not the best conclusion. How many families are pet owners? It's not a hard requirement and it doesn't make sense for it to be a hard requirement.
stevofolife··on Why Don't We Teach People How to Parent?
I think your priorities are different than mine ;)
stevofolife··on Why Don't We Teach People How to Parent?
Seems reasonable but not so friendly in practice. Not everyone can afford to raise a pet due to living conditions, financial reasons, and time and attention.

Edit: "Afford" might not be the best term to use here since it relates to money mainly. "Capacity" might be slightly better.

stevofolife··on What I learned using private LLMs to write an undergraduate history essay
> I don’t see LLMs as playing any significant role in building understanding.

Wrong. LLM plays a significant role in building understanding in this day and age. Combining Google (Internet) Search and LLM to do one's research and knowledge accumulation is the bread and butter.

stevofolife··on Sharing Screen with GPT 4 vision
Ah got it! So basically the prompt to GPT4 is an image + text (converted from audio).
stevofolife··on Sharing Screen with GPT 4 vision
Am I correct to say this is a multi modal model using vision and audio?

What model is it? And how is it understanding the image and the question? Can anyone shed some light on this technical process?

stevofolife··on Every app that adds AI looks like this
If there's a gold mine, and everyone is scrambling to claim a share of it, how can I predict who will achieve the greatest success? The reality is that I can't. Since the outcome is uncertain, the strategy is to invest in anyone actively engaged at the gold mine.

This approach is obviously simplistic and loosely-speaking. In practice the network effect would be precedent where I would favor investing in individuals I'm acquainted with, who possess a track record of experiences and competence in generating wealth.

So the point is, there is nothing wrong with actively engaging at the goldmine and be rewarded for it by investors. These are motivated by clear rationales.
