stevewodil··on Oomwoo, an open-source robot vacuum you build yourself
Mostly circular, some have slightly asymmetric shapes like Eufy e28. The mid range and higher typically have an extending arm that handles edges or corners
stevewodil··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
There are but it's discontinued. There is no current generation model with page turn buttons.
stevewodil··on Playdate’s handheld changed how Duke University teaches game design
You'd farm more aura with an ereader on the train
stevewodil··on Playdate’s handheld changed how Duke University teaches game design
Sometimes I concede on this point with certain devices, but the screen on the playdate basically requires light at a specific angle for it to be at all discernible, so I don't blame you and can't recommend it as a result
stevewodil··on Playdate’s handheld changed how Duke University teaches game design
In the end, my personal favorite game was selling it on ebay

stevewodil··on Apple introduces new AirTag with longer range and improved findability
I put one in my car when I shipped it across the country - it was great to be able to check where it was and know when it was getting close!
stevewodil··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
The article title reflects the typo, it's an issue with the original publication.
stevewodil··on Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class
I don’t know if this matters much. When I was in school it was rare to actually read a book assignment anyways, and I’m sure with LLMs now it’s less.

I’ve started to have a positive association with reading only in the last few years, I wish schools didn’t force books onto children and make them think they hate reading for their whole lives.

stevewodil··on Join the on-call roster, it'll change your life
On call rotations are part of basically every engineering team that owns any production service at tech companies, not just SRE
stevewodil··on Enjoy CarPlay While You Still Can
>according to GM, the company can create an even better experience for drivers by dropping Apple and making its own software

History has shown that most (especially legacy) car manufacturers make crappy software. I simply don't believe that GM will make exceptional infotainment software and additionally there's no doubt they will charge some subscription fee for parts of the software. It will not be up to the same standard as Tesla or Rivian's software where I can partially accept this argument.

I love CarPlay and my phone already has all the features I need in the car in terms of music, maps, responding to messages, etc. CarPlay is a requirement for me when looking at a car (even rentals).

stevewodil··on 10k pushups and other silly exercise quests that changed my life
I prefer a more optimal ratio such as 10:1 for optimal injury prevention and optimal posture correction
stevewodil··on Satya Nadella says job cuts have been 'weighing heavily' on him
Never that heavily. It’s a tough job at the top
stevewodil··on Kindle is removing download and transfer option on Feb 26th
To use download and transfer you are required to have a kindle device that supports it registered on your account (11th gen or older), so that's why the option doesn't show up for you.

If the files are .azw3 then it's the same

stevewodil··on E Ink’s color ePaper tech gets supersized for outdoor displays
What is the issue?
stevewodil··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
Android has historically done poorly in areas with no signal with regards to battery life. Did it come back after charging it?
stevewodil··on Hold on there: WPA3 connections fail after 11 hours
What happened to the other two hours
stevewodil··on Wix’s new tool can create entire websites from prompts
This guy must really love mattresses!
stevewodil··on If you haven't logged into your Google acct in over 2 years, it will be deleted
They are deleting data associated with the account, but are they still maintaining the address that was registered to the account?

I doubt they are allowing people to sign up with the deleted accounts email address, I was in this exact scenario years back and wasn’t able to sign up again using my deleted account name

stevewodil··on Slack issues
This is very accurate. Or the customer communication lead was shadowing and this was their first incident.

It’s all the same

stevewodil··on Taking Magnesium tablet everyday changes my life
Supplementation won’t have affects unless you’re already deficient in something, so these users are probably having real results but it’s due to an initial deficiency
stevewodil··on Your "simulation" might not need state
The Frontend local data store is essentially what a lot of state management libraries offer. Look at how you store and dispatch changes in something like redux.

I think this type of pattern (not necessarily redux specifically) is definitely the future of Frontend state if it’s not already the current paradigm

stevewodil··on Survey: iPhone owners spend more, have higher incomes than Android users
Ever since I started using iPhone I did land a few new high paying jobs and am starting to spend more money (lifestyle creep). I’m never going back to android now that I’m accustomed to this new life.
stevewodil··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
I have a eerily similar problem with my Galaxy Buds+ on my macbook. 15-20 minutes into a Zoom call and suddenly my audio doesn't work and neither does the mic, I have to ditch the headphones and use the laptop mic + speakers.

Going to guess it's a macOS bug given that other headphones are showing the same behavior

stevewodil··on Ask HN: What tool would you buy to make your life easier?

stevewodil··on I couldn’t get over my brother’s death
