stevenpetryk··on Show HN: Mafs – React components for interactive math
Thanks for calling this out—I couldn't find anything when I tried emulating an SE. What's broken?
stevenpetryk··on Show HN: Mafs – React components for interactive math
That's all there is to it.
stevenpetryk··on Show HN: Mafs – React components for interactive math
Of course, builders gonna build.

Thank you! I actually can’t remember what made me start building it. I think I was learning differential equations and wanted to try visualizing some parts of that, and it spiraled into a full blown thing. I kept getting impressed by the flexibility and accessibility of SVG.

I don’t really have a target audience, I just enjoy building it. As I add more examples I expose more weak spots or feature opportunities.

Regarding your SO, Mafs could be a good fit if she knows React, but if not, Geogebra is a fantastic WYSIWYG visualization editor. Mafs would have the cool benefit of being able to show the underlying logic to the student though :)

stevenpetryk··on How Discord supercharges network disks for extreme low latency
That's a common theme here. We try to avoid making tools into projects.
stevenpetryk··on Blitz.js – Fullstack Toolkit for Next.js
This is not the kind of framework you can casually build and maintain yourself to support another project.
stevenpetryk··on The state finally letting teens sleep in
That's amazing. My high school started at 7:05. By senior year, I began systematically missing first period because I just couldn't get up and ready on time without feeling terrible.
stevenpetryk··on Humans did not evolve to ride bicycles (2017)
In case you didn't know, they make bikes with carbon+rubber belt drives now, rather than chains. It's kind of nice for commuter bikes because there's no grease to get on your pants.
stevenpetryk··on Humans did not evolve to ride bicycles (2017)
I don't really see it as a matter of efficiency. It's more that I never have to really think about where my feet are on the pedals. They're just always in the right spot and no extra work has to go into keeping them there.
stevenpetryk··on Blender 3.1
Make sure you have macOS Monterrey 12.3 beta (the Metal backend requires 12.3 or above).
stevenpetryk··on My smart home 2021: A Home Assistant love story
Kinda related but I've always imagined selling a house and leaving behind a "readme" with the latest state of things. I know inspections cover many things, but it'd be nice to have something from the previous owner talking about how specific things work.
stevenpetryk··on Astronomers uncover largest group of rogue planets yet
From the article:

> Some scientists believe rogue planets can form from the collapse of a gas cloud that is too small to lead to the formation of a star, or that they could have been kicked out from their parent system. But which mechanism is more likely remains unknown.

And also worth pointing out that traditional engines catch fire far more often. Battery fires are just harder to extinguish.
stevenpetryk··on Rich Harris joins Vercel to work on Svelte full time
Vercel's increasing control over the frontend ecosystem worries me a lot.
stevenpetryk··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
Foam doesn't run on my phone. Because VS Code doesn't run on my phone. So I use Obsidian to edit a synced folder on my phone, just because it is functionally similar to Foam but runs on iOS.
stevenpetryk··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
I like to use Obsidian on iOS and then Foam on my computer. They happen to have a lot of the same custom Markdown syntax, and I prefer using VS Code on my computer :)

stevenpetryk··on America is substantially reducing poverty among children
Consider this: the intention is quite obvious, and the gravity of the situation makes pedantry like this come across as completely tone-deaf.
stevenpetryk··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
How would you feel about unlimited with an enforced minimum?
stevenpetryk··on Building apps in minutes, not months
Seems pretty clear to me that this isn't designed to build scalable apps. And that's okay—it's still a very thought-provoking exploration into a different paradigm of persistence.
stevenpetryk··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
A lot of negative sentiment for unlimited PTO here. I had unlimited PTO at one of my previous jobs (Intercom), and my boss was very clear about how much felt like too much, but still encouraged me to take plenty. I took 30 days off one year and nobody batted an eye. It's an overly cynical viewpoint to say that all unlimited PTO policies are bad/meant to fuck over employees, because some management chains really _do_ want people to lead fulfilling lives.
stevenpetryk··on Why Authorization Is Hard
I've never used it in prod, but have heard great things from former Intercom coworkers about how easy it was to rewrite the whole auth layer in Oso. Never heard someone describe being "blown away" building an auth layer but here we are.

Congrats to the Oso team for building a great product :)

stevenpetryk··on Storybook: UI component explorer for front end developers
Not to mention that every time you start Storybook, it seems to compile itself. At Aha! we use it for hosting our component library (which are web components written in Stencil, and which don't require webpack to be built), and even then, we spend about 20-30s waiting for webpack to startup and compile everything inside of Storybook.

Just FYI, a cynic is someone who assumes people are selfish. A lot of people confuse it for pessimist.
stevenpetryk··on MIT Mathlets
Dang! I did test on iPad at one point. Thanks for the heads up.
stevenpetryk··on MIT Mathlets
Funnily enough, I built it largely to impress them when I applied last year. But they black holed me. Still happy I made it!

Shameless plug for my React library for creating interactive visualizations on the web, in case anyone wants to make similar things. Probably needs a little work to make things this sophisticated though :)

stevenpetryk··on Manim: An animation engine for explanatory math videos
SVG works much more naturally with React, since it’s able to be managed via the DOM. Doesn’t have to be an <img />.
stevenpetryk··on Manim: An animation engine for explanatory math videos
SVG. It's remarkably powerful given that it supports arbitrary linear transformations and all sorts of computer graphics things.
stevenpetryk··on Manim: An animation engine for explanatory math videos
Nope! I like Three.js though. These visualizations are pretty intense.
stevenpetryk··on Manim: An animation engine for explanatory math videos
Shameless plug for my React library for creating similar-looking, interactive visualizations on the web. Highly inspired by 3blue1brown/manim's style. Less focused around animation, more focused on interaction. :)

Edit: probably needs a bit of chores done, especially around typescript declaration organization. I built it during a brief 3-week funemployment last year. Side projects are hard!
