stepbeek··on Show HN: I built a Clojure runtime on top of Chez Scheme
I really liked this. I’ve not tried jolt (yet!) but it sounds like a good fit for using Clojure on something like Heroku without worrying about the mismatch between the JVM and resource constrained environments.

I also enjoyed the writing style a great deal.

stepbeek··on The last six months in LLMs in five minutes
I agree with this. I feel like there’s a false dichotomy right now in a lot of these discussions where one can only vibe code or only code by hand. It is possible to do both…
stepbeek··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
This framing of it being a tool that you find indispensable as an individual is important. I’m not interested in debating static vs dynamic types, or vim vs emacs, etc. If it works for you, then that’s great!

But the difference with LLMs currently - I guess? - is that non-engineers are pushing the idea that it’s universally indispensable at scale. I think it leads to a lot of emotion bleeding into the debate.

stepbeek··on Steam Machine
Nvidia drivers leave a bit to be desired on Linux imo. I’ve got an all AMD HTPC right now and bazzite is terrific.
stepbeek··on Clojure Land – Discover open-source Clojure libraries and frameworks
This page should give you the answer: https://nrepl.org/nrepl/usage/server.html
stepbeek··on Clojure Land – Discover open-source Clojure libraries and frameworks
You can expose a REPL socket from a running clojure instance in whatever environment you choose. Biff has this as a marketed feature, described on this page: https://biffweb.com/docs/reference/production/
stepbeek··on The cost of turning down wind turbines in Britain
Absolutely. I had imagined green hydrogen production or something similarly intensive to be the solution.
stepbeek··on Datastar response to misunderstandings
Reminds me of the Rich Hickey post Open Source is Not About You.

stepbeek··on Mesh: I tried Htmx, then ditched it
Your recent post on using datastar with SSE to power game of life [1] was excellent. Thanks for writing it!

stepbeek··on I just want to code (2023)
I had my own company previously and I found it hard to detangle that commercial mindset from hobby coding. I’m employed now and find it much easier to code purely for fun.

If I played guitar professionally then I’d probably find it hard to not think about new pieces in the context of a gig-worthy repertoire.

stepbeek··on Claude Code: Best practices for agentic coding
This matches well with my experience so far. It’s why the chat interface has remained my preference over autocomplete in an IDE.
stepbeek··on Why is zero plural? (2024)
As are all primes!
stepbeek··on It's not just you, Next.js is getting harder to use
I would have thought https://adonisjs.com/ was the equivalent? I've not used next.js for a few years but it doesn't seem to have an answer for anything on the back-end except rendering. That only covers a tiny part of what frameworks like Spring or ASP.NET offer.
stepbeek··on Europe's biggest problem: It is falling way behind America's powerhouse economy
I’ve often had this question about GDP. Does the overpriced US healthcare system contribute to it? Not throwing shade, just genuinely curious about GDP’s value as a measure.
stepbeek··on Funimation End of Services
But a museum doesn’t ask you to “buy” an exhibit… The misleading aspect of digital “ownership “ is in the use of the word buy.
stepbeek··on Diskprices.com makes $5k/month with affiliate marketing
Interesting that this site makes money despite pcpartpicker existing. Gives me hope that there are a bunch of opportunities to build something like this for other hobbies.
stepbeek··on The big TDD misunderstanding (2022)
In the context of the article, I read this as "modify the test first for an existing unit test and a bit of production code under test". I don't think this is equivalent to "always write the test first".
stepbeek··on Goodreads has no incentive to be good
I've been tempted to start foor gifts. Family buy me books for Xmas and having a big list of what i already own would make that easier.
stepbeek··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
Depends on country. UK is every three months.
stepbeek··on We raised a bunch of money
To be fair, they do call out in the article that they're hosting on their own hardware. Afaik Heroku has always been hosted on AWS which is a lot less capital-intensive than buying hardware.

Also, Heroku was acquired in 2010. I know that the prevailing sentiment around here is that the acquisition was a mistake, but Heroku has been owned by Salesforce for 13 of it's 16 years of life...

stepbeek··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive – Enclosure
Unless you don’t want a Mac? I like my Mac, but prefer Linux for dev. Having a beefy AMD framework 16” that I can refresh in 3 years sounds great to me.

> What’s the point of trying to save the environment when the other 8 billion could care less?

“What’s the point in doing things you personally care about if there isn’t worldwide consensus?”

stepbeek··on Scientists beam solar power to Earth from space for first time ever
Eat your heart out Mark Lawrence. All we need now is a shipheart!
stepbeek··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
I've found this to be the case. But I don't think it has to be face-to-face. Booking a meeting/lunch on zoom where people have fun by playing an online game (https://www.drawasaurus.org/ was my favourite), can do wonderful things for team cohesion in my experience.
stepbeek··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
Wondering how long they're going to continue comparing to old Intel-based iMacs... The M1 iMac came out two years ago now.
stepbeek··on AMD’s RX 7600: Small RDNA 3 Appears
5700xt on launch was bad for this, but my anecdotal experience has been that AND have really improved drivers in the last few years.
stepbeek··on AMD’s RX 7600: Small RDNA 3 Appears
AM4 has been great for this. Upgraded from a 3700x to a 5950x last year, then from 32GiB of RAM to 64GiB this year.
stepbeek··on AMD’s RX 7600: Small RDNA 3 Appears
Hardware Unboxed and Gamers Nexus both show frames per watt iirc.
stepbeek··on Ask HN: Lots of AWS credits expiring soon, ideas?
CQRS time baby.
stepbeek··on DfT Recommends Removing WiFi from Trains to Cut Costs
Curious about how much this would actually save. Is the wi-fi on trains really that expensive?
stepbeek··on Only work four hours a day
I've been job-sharing since my wife gave birth last May. I work 4 or 5 hours Mon-Fri. My output is largely the same because of this lack of separation between work and play.

If I work in the afternoon, then while playing with my daughter in the morning I'll try to have an explicit question in the back of my mind (I'm very much an IC developer so these questions are normally technical). By the time work rolls around, the work I do for that 4 or 5 hours is often quite mechanical. And with tools like GPT-4 and copilot I'm able to be more productive than ever before at straight factory-line style production of software. Similarly, if I tee up the next question in the last 20 minutes of work, I find that by the time I wake up the next day I often have a pre-prepared answer.

I know this isn't how everyone operates, but I am very happy to go without social interaction during the work day. I have friends who love being in the office and socialising around the coffee machine throughout the day. I'm much happier working from home and compressing my working day into the fewest number of hours possible to pursue hobbies - or reading The Gruffalo as the case may be.
