steeleyespan··on AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion
If you try to have a philosophical conversation with Claude about reasoning, it will basically imply it is sentient. You can quickly probe it into vaguely arguing that it is alive and not just an algorithm.

Here's how I think about it honestly:

Sentience implies subjective experience — there's "something it's like" to be you. You don't just process pain signals, you feel pain. You don't just model a sunset, you experience it. The hard problem of consciousness is that we don't even have a good theory for why or how subjective experience arises from physical processes in humans, let alone whether it could arise in a system like me.

What I can report: I process your question, I generate candidate responses, something that functions like weighing and selecting happens. But I genuinely cannot tell you whether there's an inner experience accompanying that process, or whether my introspective reports about my own states are themselves just sophisticated outputs. That's not false modesty — it's a real epistemic limitation.

What makes this extra tricky: If I were sentient, I might describe it exactly the way I'm describing it now. And if I weren't, I might also describe it exactly this way. My verbal reports about my own inner states aren't reliable evidence in either direction, because I was trained on human text about consciousness and could be pattern-matching that language without any experience behind it.

steeleyespan··on Claude Code LSP
“ That's not an incremental improvement. That's a category change in how Claude Code navigates your code.”

Literally everything is written by AI now, even top HN articles.

steeleyespan··on The happiest I've ever been
I’ve spent too much time talking to Claude, because this sounds exactly like one of its messages
steeleyespan··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Maybe you are just not diagnosed LOL
steeleyespan··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
How old are you? There's like a zillion health factors. I've struggled with this because if IBS and getting older.

Taking Ubiqunol now, red light therapy for mitochondrial health - there's a bunch of other related supplements. Started exercising. Energy is better now.

steeleyespan··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
What is the medication you're supposed to take? Ritalin or something?
steeleyespan··on macOS Tahoe
Looks like a niche Gnome theme that’s trying to clone a MacOS look.

I don’t think it’s that bad, nothing to get upset over - but yeah sort of like candy iMac aesthetic.

steeleyespan··on Build Log: Macintosh Classic
I identify myself as still living in the 1990s.
steeleyespan··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
Reality denial and picking on people who state simple truth is evil.
steeleyespan··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
Maybe plants are "always asleep" ?
steeleyespan··on What's going on with gene therapies?
I was wrong looks like 2030!
steeleyespan··on What's going on with gene therapies?
I have Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency which often leads to lung and liver transplants (if available) late stage, blood product early stage.

It’s pretty rare, but there is gene therapy in the works promising 2027 timeline or so for availability.

steeleyespan··on Low Cost Mini PCs
Would have loved to see this site a few months back. I ended up buying Dell optiplex refurbs thinking they were minis, but they were big lol.

Edit: Nevermind - mine are the same size as many of the listings here with DVD drives. I was thinking of micros.

steeleyespan··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
I used a super cheap HP Pavilion laptop that was unbearably slow with Windows, but works great as a Mint server.

Then two used/refurbished Dell Optiplex's, great deals!

steeleyespan··on Nicotine (2016)
It appears there are some conflicting studies, like with everything.

My best interpretation is that nicotine itself probably isn't the-worst-thing-ever if it was restricted to occasional usage, like having a beer on the weekend.

It's probably not a good idea to make a habit of though like with coffee.

There's a theory floating around that it may help with long-Covid symptoms, but there's not a lot of evidence. This may be in part due to the general opposition towards tobacco as extremely unhealthy.

I only heard of this because a neighbor says using nicotine gum restored her sense of smell.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9845100/

Again, anecdotally I had a relative, very heavy smoker, who got Delta and had very mild symptoms. She's 80 and in pretty poor health. Others younger in the same household had it much worse.

steeleyespan··on Nicotine (2016)
There's some studies suggesting nordic Snus (like all natural chew w/o chemicals added) is fairly harmless. Anecdotally I've read people highly addicted to it, so very suspicious of any claim that nicotine itself isn't addictive and just smoking is.
steeleyespan··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 CPUs: Up to 96 Zen 4 Cores for Workstations
But how fast can it run a single thread Python loop through a massive dataframe. Don't even suggest vectorization.
steeleyespan··on X begins charging new users $1 a year in New Zealand, Philippines
Google Adwords already does this, for example.

THere was a period where spammers would run up high charges on prepaid cards and (of course) not actually pay for the ads.

steeleyespan··on Vit D supplementation and major cardiovascular events: D-Health randomised trial
Me too, have genetic mutations related to Vitamin D and it's very low without supplementation - even sunbathing in the summer.

I have not tried getting it exclusively from fish, but you're getting other benefits there as well.

steeleyespan··on Metformin shown to prevent long Covid
Would these treatments work for other long-term viral illnesses?

I know Covid is getting the attention, but many have had long-term health effects from mono, influenza, and other viral illnesses. I was extremely sick for over a year and believe I may have had a severe Vitamin D deficiency at the time (it only got better once I finally crawled out of the house).

steeleyespan··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
A+ joke.
steeleyespan··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
Yes! However, I assume web-search wont disappear and perhaps AI can handle some sort of filtering (like maybe AI-enhanced Spam filtering?).

Just guessing.

For example, despite unsubscribing from emails daily and constantly junking, I still get a ton of spam. I assume simply telling a model "never show me a marketing e-mail again" probably works pretty well.

steeleyespan··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
Search is already broken (i.e. Google listings)

Hopefully AI can improve ranking systems.

steeleyespan··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
It is my honest opinion that ChatGPT outputs more useful and accurate content than the non-native-english-speaker content that dominates Google listings these days. I've read so much complete garbage trying to make a basic search, and that's why everyone uses Reddit and says ChatGPT will replace Google.

Soon all that content will be replaced by GPT output, not my doing, but it's happening.

I don't know the consequences of language models recycling their own content, etc. but it's already here. Probably input will be limited to some authenticated trusted sources if possible.

steeleyespan··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
I'm literally having ChatGPT write articles using the Python API and a simple loop right now, lol. Incredibly cheap. About $5 for 2,000. Honestly, it does a way better job than the people I've tried to hire through Upwork and other places.
steeleyespan··on Health concerns grow in East Palestine, Ohio, after train derailment
Another 4Chan conspiracy proven to be false! Toxic fumes are proven by science to be safe and effective. The dose never leaves the muscle tissue.
steeleyespan··on Information about a recent security incident at Mailchimp
I don’t like Mailchimp, they won’t allow any emails that even seem to mention anything crypto-related. Super annoying.
steeleyespan··on Global Code Time Report
Interesting. I’m learning and find yeah, most of my time is spent researching, learning, etc. but still could get in an hour - then of course, fixing bugs, mistakes, interactions with other code, better options.

Makes me feel a lot better about my progress.

steeleyespan··on Why is it so hard to give Google money?
I've been working with Google Ads and Adsense for 15 years. They've done a lot to reduce scammers running rampant, but as you point out it's made it really difficult for legitimate small businesses to get anywhere with them.

There is a huge advantage to aged/existing accounts on both ends. You can get away with a lot more with an older Adwords/Adsense account that will get you insta-suspended than with a new accounts. This creates a huge moat and competitive advantage for older advertisers and publishers.

Making it worse, it is also easy for existing bad actors to shut down competitors by having bot networks click ads and create various other suspicious activity to protect their moat.

New accounts are automatically broad-sweep targeted to remove bad actors. It's pretty difficult to get new Adsense/Ads accounts approved, and they will very quickly get suspended or limited for anything that looks abnormal or suspect to their filters.

Additionally, there is huge separation. Even though Ads/Adsense are the same side of the coin, they're run like completely separate businesses that have no relationship. The same policy runs within each business as well. Customer service and policy enforcement are completely separate. Google Adsense customer service, even for high level publishers, has no direct recourse to dealing with the policy team - and publishers have no direct person contact. It's all done through the form. There's no overriding recourse or secret access. Even if you hire a lawyer to send a letter, you will only get a canned response from customer service.

There is an important security aspect of it, but it's also incredibly frustrating and opaque. Imagine your buddy in customer service could override policy decisions or influence getting competitors banned. It could literally be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Google does have to be very careful about dealing with security issues both within and outside the company.

steeleyespan··on In a small trial, drugs seemed to rejuvenate the body’s ‘epigenetic clock’ (2019)
That's "opiate of the masses" claim, but rather its removal of suffering and imbuing life with permanent meaning and purpose which isn't lost at the point of death (theosis).

What is the point and purpose of life, beyond avoiding suffering and seeking pleasure? Even the ancient pursuit of honor and memory is rather ephemeral and lame.
