steelbrain··on CUDA Is Still a Giant Moat for Nvidia
> they dropped development and released it as open source.

"They" (being AMD) didn't. The person they contracted put in a clause that allowed him to open source the work (years AFTER) AMD stopped paying him.

Maybe I'm hallucinating but I have read this EXACT line somewhere else before...

steelbrain··on Rolldown: Rollup compatible bundler written in Rust
Based on my experience in writing JS tooling (https://github.com/steelbrain/pundle / https://aneesiqbal.ai/2020-05-17-what-i-dont-like-about-node... ), even if rollup stayed in js and continued to use magic string, but somehow gained multi-core capabilities and cheaper memory operations, it may be able to somewhat compete with the rust tooling.

JS tooling is mostly single threaded. It is expensive to stringify a large AST and then parse it again over IPC vs just transferring an object (which is not allowed by runtime). This cost incentives more things happening in the same process, so there’s a limit to how fast you can be with JS

steelbrain··on Reentry of International Space Station Batteries into Earth's Atmosphere
I was curious so looked it up, this is what the batteries look like: https://spaceflight101.com/iss-expedition-47/wp-content/uplo... (from https://archive.is/D1qbD / https://spaceflight101.com/iss-sets-up-for-battery-switch-c2...)

I wonder how they would remake the battery chemistry if they were to use all the latest advancements.

steelbrain··on AWS acquires Talen's 960MW nuclear data center campus in Pennsylvania

Is that really so? I was under the impression that even data centers go through peak and bottom usage as do most online services.

steelbrain··on 12% of Upwork users are bots
I'm probably missing something but isn't it possible that people simply asked an LLM to generate the cover letters instead of the profiles themselves being bots?
steelbrain··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
You guessed it, it's NAS -(Ethernet)-> SBC -(USB)-> PS5. This is partially because they are on different floors and partially because the NAS server doesn't have any OTG ports.

> Also how does content play on the PS5?

As far as the PS5 is concerned, it just has a USB hard drive plugged into it. It doesn't know how it works under the hood.

steelbrain··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
Raspberry Pi 5 still has a USB 2.0 OTG port. So the bottleneck is USB in that case
steelbrain··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
This is really interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Unfortunately the consoles don't allow installation of such a USB over IP client so I can't use this, but for other usecases where the clients are running general purpose OS, this could be great!

steelbrain··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
This is really interesting. I've been researching some viable options like this. I have a beefy Network Attached Storage (NAS) server that I actively look for excuses to make use of. I have connected with some 40g and 10g interconnects for it across the house. I also have a PS5 & XBox that use USB hard-drives for additional storage.

I looked into whether I could expose my NAS storage to PS5 & XBox. Turns out that it's possible! It's possible by mounting the NAS shares over iSCSI or NFS, and then emulating a USB storage device using the g_mass_storage module that exposes said storage to USB hosts.

Besides time and cost, one major blocker for me right now is the bandwidth that such a system would provide. It's just not that big of an upgrade. Raspberry Pi very famously supports USB-OTG (similar/same as xDCI), but it only does so with USB 2.0 speeds, and so do all the other SBCs in that class that I found, except for one, RockPi4. RockPi has a Gigabit ethernet port, so if you max out ethernet, you can provide stable HDD speeds to both the PS5 & Xbox.

It would be really interesting to explore a solution where you have the ability to plug in a custom PCIe network card (or an express card) that lets you go beyond 1gbe because then you can really saturate the USB 3.0 interface.

steelbrain··on Show HN: RAM Prices
Thanks for building this. As someone who got bit by this, could you please add a column for SMR vs CMR? Thanks again!
steelbrain··on Show HN: RAM Prices
Someone correct me if I am wrong but isn't DDR5 ECC by default? I know this from an anecdote that I used to enable XMP all the time in my builds and run RAM stability tests, none ever caught anything but on my DDR5 builds, if I turned on XMP and played a game for an extended period, I'd get a BSOD after 4-5 hours, which I figured is the ECC built into DDR5 flagging something unexpected.

steelbrain··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
> and there was a notice to check for loose bolts on the Max.

For a different part of the aircraft, yes. I don't think airlines check for every loose bolt ever when the bulletin says something specific.

steelbrain··on Windows 12: Savior of PC makers, or just an apology for Windows 11?
> Windows 11 could cause one of the biggest environment disasters in recent computer industry history.

That would be the case if there was vendor lockdown on the hardware to only ever support Windows. Thankfully, for most people, this isn’t the case and Linux exists.

Yeah? Like what?

steelbrain··on Finding that lead emissions from aircraft engines contribute to air pollution
My understanding (and I'm no authority in this subject) is that adding lead to gasoline allows achieving better octane ratings (ie lower chance of self-ignition). This reduces engine knock, which makes the engine live longer, also allows pushing more fuel into a cylinder per ignition cycle more confidently.

These things are possible without lead as well, it just costs more money to do so.

steelbrain··on Protecting Chrome Traffic with Hybrid Kyber KEM
While I understand and admire the efforts to optimize performance, I think if 1kb spent wisely could be worth it.

Based on the pingdom stats from 2018, the average page size was above 2Mb. See https://www.pingdom.com/blog/webpages-are-getting-larger-eve...

So in the grand scheme of things, it could be a sub percentage price for better security. I do see how even small numbers compound for large populations, but this one is fine IMO

Not trying to pick a fight but just posting because I hear this often from my friends, re birds being happy.

The choice, if between coal-fired plants and windmills should be pretty obvious to birds. Sure we may not see them getting splashed to bits with coal-fired plants but they are silently getting ill/dying over time.

You’re missing another variable here. In your case it may just be the thermal interface material (TIM) isn’t doing a good job of transferring the heat from the processor onto the heat sinks that the fan blows over.

I’ve had temperature drops of over 15 degrees c by opting for Liquid Metal, everything else being same.

Unions can go either way. They suffer from the same problems as democratic governments, ie prone to corruption and bloating and working against the people they are supposed to protect.

What do you do in that situation? Do you have a Union for you Union?

Just a few days ago, this was trending on HackerNews: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36188406
