staticvoidmaine··on Moved a server from one building to another with zero downtime
That book is Expeditionary Force
staticvoidmaine··on LibreOffice: The Next Five Years
Thank you so much for saying this. I had no idea until I read your comment and immediately opened the view menu. I am blown away I didn’t know about this after over 10 years of using LO...
staticvoidmaine··on How are you using Huggin?
If corona virus, then no hugs
staticvoidmaine··on I Got My Attention Back (2017)
This is very cool! I’ve recently started using my wife’s old Kindle for reading the pfSense book and the Google SRE Handbook and have been loving the fact that it isn’t a bright screen or filled with distractions.

This is a great idea that I’ll be trying out with a couple technical blogs.

staticvoidmaine··on New system76 laptop: Oryx Pro

staticvoidmaine··on New system76 laptop: Oryx Pro
The difference is likely just whether or not you financially back/support all of the firmware/software/support services offered by System76
staticvoidmaine··on New system76 laptop: Oryx Pro
Don’t forget that part of what’s wrapped into that premium is excellent support & warranty along with the development of firmware and Pop!_OS. It’s more than just the hardware. It’s ensuring you can rely on that hardware to work end to end.
staticvoidmaine··on We Are Trying Out PeerTube
I can’t agree with this enough. I’d love to hear more about how to accomplish what you’re asking in the current state of the fediverse. I’ve been reading into it but am not sure how to use my own instance as my “who I am” and “where I am from” while not allowing others to be from my “home” yet still safely connecting and conversing with others.

It’s marketed as easy, but once you start digging into the details, it quickly becomes more complex than I was expecting.

I’ve been looking into Mastadon, Pixelfed, and Matrix to use in this way, but it seems pointless since I don’t want to host my friends and family’s content, and they’re not going to sign up for some random odd sounding instance. I’m then left with an empty social network or communication tool that’s little more than a tech demo.

staticvoidmaine··on Jitsi Meet Electron 2.0
How do you feel about contributing what you’ve learned to the documentation?
staticvoidmaine··on The Brave browser is brilliant, but probably not for the reasons you think
Given that it’s convertible into USD and other “real” currencies, how do you expect this line of reasoning to hold?
staticvoidmaine··on I have seen things
One of the things I find interesting is this:

In computer programming, a “solution” to a problem is in essence, a structured framework of thought.

As an example, why are there many different programming languages? Well in addition to various other reasons, for the sake of solving problems in a new or different way of thinking.

Is youth constantly reinventing solutions to already solved problems due to amnesia, or are they perhaps creating new ways to reason about already identified problems?

Just because you saw the problem first doesn’t buy you the right to providing the only solution.

Computer science is unique in that it is art as much as science. Allowing for multiple frameworks of thought on a solution allows for the best solution to rise to the top.

If we are still seeing an influx of new and interesting solutions to existing problems, perhaps our field isn’t as mature as we’d like to think it is.

staticvoidmaine··on Eternal Terminal
Maybe he’s not that smart. Maybe he’s like a worker bee who only knows how to push buttons or something
staticvoidmaine··on Update on free software and telemetry
Wow what an arrogant person. I was originally interested, but in reading that comment chain, all I heard was, “I don’t care what you think. My way is clearly the most superior way and you are less than for thinking any other way could possibly be valid.” That’s my cue to stay as far away as possible from a project, and it would be a shame to have such a daft and stubborn coworker for which I’m thankful I don’t!

An equal and opposing argument:

Email patches? You’re going to make me send an email patch? I can’t tell if you’re joking or serious... you’re... serious? Shall I write my patch into the computer via morse code as well? How could you possibly expect someone to take the time to jump through all the hoops that your massive ego and nostalgia for the past requires?

Oh wait, that sounds arrogant and childish too...

staticvoidmaine··on From FOMO to JOMO: the joy of missing out
Having just taken a brief look at your link, it seems your link does more to discredit NLP than justify it. How did you come across it, how did you vet it before subscribing to it, and how has your experience applying it been?
staticvoidmaine··on OpenDrop: An Open Source AirDrop Implementation
Rather than the google solution suggested by a sibling comment, I’d suggest a look at send.firefox.com.
staticvoidmaine··on Soulver – Notepad, meet calculator
It’s a little different, but take a look and see what you think:

It’s desktop cross platform

A great option which is similar but different and which I enjoy very much is:

staticvoidmaine··on New Raspberry Pi 4 Firmware Lowers Temperature by 3-5°C
I relate to this so much. We are meant to adapt to our climate. Why do we resist so much? I ended up quoting osha regulation to ensure coworkers don’t turn the heat down below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. One coworker set it at 60 degrees at one point early this spring when it was a pleasant temperature outside. I biked in in shorts and a T-shirt and was shivering at my desk.
staticvoidmaine··on What's a Linux User?
I’m an arch hobbyist but I use Pop!_OS professionally as I have a System76 Darter Pro and am a genuine fan of the journey they’re embarking on with the introduction of their OS even if it’s barely different than Ubuntu “right now”. I get that it might not be a popular choice here on HN. I just don’t have the time to tinker like I used to.

It comes down to the fact that it’s super stable and the modifications they’ve made are in important areas for me such as keyboard shortcuts, TPM, drivers/firmware support, and a unified look and feel. It makes for a snazzy, low hassle low maintenance dev machine.

staticvoidmaine··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
I have been using a System76 Darter Pro (max cpu and ram) with Pop!_OS 19.04 and it’s been a dream to use. My day to day workload includes docker, node.js services, Postgres, mongodb, and gis tasks. I get about 6 hours of battery life while working and about 8 or so when doing non-work tasks. It’s the real deal. I’m also driving a 4K monitor with the laptop display on as well. Smooth as butter. However, I’ve tried some modeling with Sweet Home 3D. That didn’t go so hot. The Darter can use thunderbolt external gpus though and I’ve been meaning to pick one up and see how well it works
staticvoidmaine··on Show HN: Swift Budget – Envelope Budgeting for iPhone
Hey this is really cool! I’m a big fan of the envelope system.

Is there support for having a separation between my personal finances and my shared as a couple finances? If not, are there plans for that? For example, we have a joint account and our own personal accounts.

staticvoidmaine··on Protections Against Fingerprinting and Crypto Mining in Firefox Nightly and Beta
I'd like to challenge your attitude on this. Does it not make sense to have your browser handle this out of the box? Personally I'd rather have overlapping functionality for a bit while we work toward a sane browser by default than the alternative which is maintaining some number of extensions each with their own configs etc...
staticvoidmaine··on Microsoft CTO on the future of software engineering [audio]
Hey, I mean build it and I'd buy it
staticvoidmaine··on Ask HN: What terminal emulator do you use and why?
Gnome Terminal. It's simple and easy. My runner up is Konsole from when I used KDE a lot. It has the quake style drop-down feature and introduced me to my preferred keyboard shortcut configurations for navigating terminal tabs.
staticvoidmaine··on Engaging New Hires
Interesting suggestion. Have you put any of this into practice? Do you have any observations, learnings, or things to watch out for to share as to how this goes in practice?
staticvoidmaine··on The gray area of charcoal toothpaste
What a coincidence! Curiosity got the best of me this past weekend and I picked up Tom's of Maine with Activated Charcoal. It's very interesting how this ingredient has been in and out of toothpaste for so long yet we don't know how it affects our teeth... I'm beginning to second guess my impulse decision.
staticvoidmaine··on Request’s Past, Present and Future
I because think maintenance mode is a responsible alternative to abandoning the package altogether as it has (from the post) ~41k packages that depend on it.
