starbase··on Tesla Gigafactory Berlin expansion is voted down by locals
Tesla's director of public policy weighs in:

> There is zero impact on any future expansion plans. We fully respect the referendum, and agree with @joergstb that this is a good opportunity to redouble our work with the community and all stakeholders. The zoning plan would potentially shift more freight traffic to expanded rail infrastructure and that would be an environmental and traffic benefit for the community. Contrary to the prevailing media narrative, the zoning changes have nothing to do with water - there is no need for additional water for any potential expansion of the site.

starbase··on Teslas crash more than gas-powered cars. Here's why
Controls on the wheel or yoke include: turn signals, horn, windshield wipers, high beams, cruise/autopilot/FSD, voice command, and two 5-way scroll wheel things which are somewhat programmable and enable additional options when another button is pressed. By default I think they control audio, cruise speed, and following distance.

Older models have some of the above on stalks.

Beyond the wheel you've got window controls, gear selector, map lights, buttons and levers to open the doors, a gas and brake pedal, I think that's it

That said, you mostly tell the car what to do with voice commands. "Defrost the windows" or "open the glove box" or "drive to Costco" etc.

Edit: Hazard lights too

starbase··on A 27-Year-Old Codebreaker Busted the Myth of Bitcoin's Anonymity
Irresponsible headline. Nobody who has done an hour of research in the last decade expects that flavor of anonymity on the blockchain.

starbase··on Is the Tesla Cybertruck a Dud? An Experienced EV Reviewer Thinks So
Shame it doesn't have a bench seat up front. That's the retro-futurist vibe I was hoping for

Still a success in the history of automobile design. Lambo-level arrogance at 10x the scale

Practically speaking, if you need to haul sod or tow your boat to the lake an hour away, it's going to be very competitive on the used market once a million units are on the road

starbase··on EV drivers discover fundamental flaw in battery tech as -30F temps hit the US
Realistic take: your 400 mile range EV runs ~300 in the dead of winter. Your 300 mile EV runs ~230 miles.

If you drive less than 200-300 miles per day, you plug in at night and never worry.

Took me a full year to stop worrying about it. Was always doing the range math in my head.

starbase··on A report estimates that some 240M Windows 10 PCs could end up in landfills
No shit. We could send them to scrappers in Africa so they could make a buck but that's verboten now too.
starbase··on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Bought a whole rig with yoke and rudders to play the 2020 version. $3k well spent for probably 200 hours of flight time. Feel like I could Sullenberger a water landing if I had to. Delusional I know but it's a game.

What does the upgrade to 2024 get me?

starbase··on Ask HN: Do you cook for multiple people (> 2 or 3)?
Labor per portion gets better with more mouths to feed. I find 6-8 is the sweet point.
starbase··on EV drivers struggle to keep batteries charged amid winter freeze
2022 Model Y long range and 2021 Model S Plaid. I rarely drive 300+ miles in a day, so topping off the battery overnight is more than enough for my family's needs. Occasionally I'll start the day below 75% (my set point) but it's never been an issue. If we lived 100 miles farther from civilization, I'd install a level 2 charger.
starbase··on Vivek Ramaswamy drops out of race, endorses Trump [video]
I saw some social media posts encouraging Democrat voters to register as Republican in order to caucus for Haley. No idea how big a role that played, though Haley supporters' second choice for prez is roughly evenly divided between Biden and Trump.
starbase··on Vivek Ramaswamy drops out of race, endorses Trump [video]
Fair enough. Vivek put in a phenomenal effort but it wasn't in the cards for 2024. Now it's Trump vs Biden, unless the latter croaks or the former is assassinated.

starbase··on EV drivers struggle to keep batteries charged amid winter freeze
in my experience (we've gotten down to about -15C this week) it's a non-issue. Even on a regular 120v outlet. Car is preconditioned, warm, and has a full tank (battery) when I hop in

starbase··on Ask HN: Do you have any lightning protection at home?
I tacked a strip of metal pigeon spikes to the apex of my roof and ran some wire to a ground rod. It's more repellant than protection, which is good enough for me.
