starbase··on Diesel-Electric Conversion Kits for Old Pickups
having driven my share of old pickups, the frames aren't going to be up to the task of carrying any significant load with this kit installed. Might be fine for tooling around town with your girlfriend, but that's about it.

IMO it would make more sense to sell the kits as a complete rolling chassis, with a brand new F250 frame, and let coachbuilders slap on whatever body they want.

agreed. diesel-electric powertrain has a specific meaning, and this ain't it. this is a diesel hybrid

nope. Rivian spins the left wheels forward and the right wheels backwards, or vice versa

starbase··on Teslas Have a Minor Issue Where the Wheels Fly Off While Driving, Documents Show
Tesla vehicles have a LOT of telemetry, which the company has used to establish fault for accidents and damage. I wouldn't be surprised if many of these cases involve the driver being less than forthcoming about what was happening when the damage occurred.

Technology Review covered this back in 2016 after a driver falsely claimed their Model X crashed into a wall on its own.

https://www.technologyreview.com/2016/06/08/70845/tesla-know...

Last month, a court in China ordered an owner to publicly apologize and pay damages after falsely claiming her Model 3 had a brake failure.

starbase··on Ask HN: Why aren't all heaters computers?
We'd need two orders of magnitude more semiconductors than currently exist. We're already building them as fast as we can.

Global energy use for heating: ~150 trillion kWh/year

Waste heat from semiconductors: ~1 trillion kWh/year

starbase··on What rural people think about clean energy
> I hate that I'm going to have to say the word rural over and over again in this podcast. It's my least favorite word

> advanced people who are going out to talk with the rural people

> They are hooked up, trapped by, entirely captured by a gigantic propaganda machine

> rural people's opinions about renewable energy as such are relatively shallow and easily shiftable

> find people who speak [with a rural accent] and train them

The host's condescension towards rural Americans could not be clearer

starbase··on Ask HN: Are You Religious?
Many will incorrectly answer "no" to this question, not realizing their system of values and beliefs and rituals has every hallmark of religion except the belief in a supernatural god.
starbase··on Rethinking "Driverless Cars"
Would be interesting to know the typical duration of a remote intervention on a Cruise vehicle.

I read that Cruise vehicles are controlled remotely about 3% of the time. Does that mean a 10-minute intervention every 5 hours, or a 10-second intervention every 5 minutes?

starbase··on Tesla strike widens as Swedish union expands blockade
Is it laughable though? The union is blockading shipments to a company that chooses not to join. The next step, apparently, will be an embargo on the company's electrical repair work and trash service.

Seems like extortion to me, so I certainly wouldn't want to put my career or my family in the crosshairs of a group that's willing to sink to such lows.

When the mafia demands protection money, it's prudent to fly under the radar.

starbase··on U.S. cities consider banning "right on red" laws amid rise in pedestrian deaths
Lawmaking can be so irrational.

In impacts below 20mph, pedestrian deaths are rare. Right on red is a 0-10mph maneuver and that's being generous.

I'm surprised the government of Sweden allows a labor union to decide what passes through the country's ports.

starbase··on Swedish Ports Threaten to Block Teslas from Entering the Country
The capital itself is not an institution, but organizations fueled by it are (whether private or public)

> labour unions that, at least on paper, actually represent the interests of the majority of people (since most people are workers and not shareholders)

Though workers outnumber shareholders at some companies, Tesla shareholders almost certainly outnumber its employees due to (1) nearly all employees being shareholders from stock grants, and (2) unusually high retail investor interest (large number of shareholders)

starbase··on Swedish Ports Threaten to Block Teslas from Entering the Country
The statement is a universal truth, not specific to sweden, scandinavia, tesla, or the union currently engaged in blocking the port.
