stackedinserter··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
If the only thing that bothers you is laptop lid pinching your fingers, then no – it won't do it.
stackedinserter··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
It can be predatory pricing that will bite us later.
stackedinserter··on Digital Audio on the ZX Spectrum's 1-Bit Beeper
ZX's audio and video systems are two things that I never missed.
stackedinserter··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
We didn't!
stackedinserter··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
The whole article is so AI.
stackedinserter··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
"Esoteric cypher that no one has seriously tried to break" lol

It's military comms traffic from WW2, encrypted by machine named Enigma. Back in 1940's it was like breaking SSL today, with only difference that they actually could (kinda) break Enigma.

stackedinserter··on Notes on gotchas while migrating 35kb preprompts from Opus to self-hosted Ollama
The main gotcha for local models is insane hardware requirements.

Even for $10K you get mediocre performance.

stackedinserter··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
Yeah, space exploration/colonization can be only made by species that live a million years, or can pass the same goal across many generations forward.

Maybe it's the answer to Fermi paradox: aliens are all around, we're just too fast for them to communicate.

stackedinserter··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
How do you _realistically_ get in trouble for using it? Jam 2.4 at an airport or near military base?
stackedinserter··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Even this highly theoretical harm can be avoided if you jam bluetooth with 50% duty cycle. Like, 2s on then 2s off.
stackedinserter··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
It was Carmen Ortiz, not abstract "US Government".
stackedinserter··on Karpathy’s Pelican
It would be better to ask model to render segmented 3d, with placeholders, like magenta is water, blue is sky, green is grass, purple is Frodo's face, etc, then pass the result through img2img model to properly "render" it.
stackedinserter··on No Stack Overflow, No Autocomplete: What Coding Felt Like in the 80s
Software was way simpler back then.
stackedinserter··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
How do people still "buy" any movies after all these stories?

If "buy" means you can watch it on this specific device while logged in with this specific account, for some limited time, then downloading it to your disk is not "theft".

Seriously, my brain, deformed by years of file sharing, can't get it.

stackedinserter··on QuadRF can spot drones and see WiFi through my wall
That is super cool, man.

Do you have a demo for that 240 elements assembly?

stackedinserter··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
Mass adoption. Two IT guys can communicate completely secure with udp packets via SSH tunnel, but it doesn't scale to family and non-techy friends.
stackedinserter··on The Vespa at 80
It's the coolest thing on 2 wheels only in CBC's imaginary world.
stackedinserter··on Claude Sonnet 5
"Our new model is proudly dumber now!"
stackedinserter··on The war against 'woke' could end US science as we know it
Sure, NASA and NIST are not "woke", but somehow this cancer creeps there. Example: https://tsapps.nist.gov/publication/get_pdf.cfm?pub_id=93249...

Money was paid to Mary Theofanos and Justyna Zwolak, and their supervisors to produce this crap, instead of researchers and engineers that do real things.

stackedinserter··on The war against 'woke' could end US science as we know it
I will not miss "US science as we know it", at least that part of it that gave us terms like "menstruating people".
stackedinserter··on The KIDS Act would require age checks to get online
These people are around you.

Watch this "regulate 3d printers because of children" hearing: https://youtu.be/sue88CXzPcQ?t=2285

Normal people that call themselves good names like "moms for actions" drag us into this totalitarian hell.

stackedinserter··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
How many people are going to buy a $10-20K rigs to run these open models?
stackedinserter··on The unbearable cheapness of open weight models
Why illegal, just pass these 3000 pages FAA-level certification, export controls and KYC. We're free country, after all!
stackedinserter··on IBM debuts sub-1 nanometer chip technology
Since a transistor can't be smaller than a single atom, maybe it's time to start optimizing our software again.
stackedinserter··on For most of the world, open-source AI is the only way forward
So if I somehow read a book for free, then somehow used that knowledge in my paid work, then I owe them % of my earnings?
stackedinserter··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
The main damage is they forced it into us and call it "classic literature".

I hated it with passion, even got F's in my report cards, and could re-read it only in my late 20's. Still hate these "language and literature" teachers, all of them.

stackedinserter··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
Try to read 10000 random numbers, one by one. Ary you able to understand them? Yes. Do you want to read them? I don't think you do. Now imagine it's pushed to you at age of 16 and called "math". You'll hate it for a good part of your future life.
stackedinserter··on For most of the world, open-source AI is the only way forward
It's closer to "that output belongs to everyone, everyone's free to train your own model"

Otherwise, everything you do belongs to all of us, because you learned on total intellectual and artistic output of human kind too.

stackedinserter··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
The saddest thing is that bureaucracy will stay, grow and flourish until the point of breakdown, when the system is not able to pay bureaucrats their salaries.

Or maybe even until they can't physically get to work (read with accent: "that I need to do even if I don't get paid")

stackedinserter··on Mexican government unveils a prototype for a new homegrown, ultra-affordable EV
You don't know what you're talking about.
