sssilver··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
This looks wonderful.

I wish it had the option to be ordered with blank keys.

sssilver··on US beef prices have soared but farmers aren't making more money
Because people who sell wooden posts and barbed wire use pickup trucks, among other things that have gone up in price.
sssilver··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Sure, the concept of money is only meaningful / valuable to humans.

But isn't there a conceptual difference between the "owners" of the Tomahawk factory vs. the people who are actually putting the missiles together?

sssilver··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Help me understand this.

There's the cost that the employees pocket, and then there's the share that the shareholders pocket, right? Doesn't "margin" represent the latter?

sssilver··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
I'm always confused by prices of "highly regulated" goods in the United States.

When I get a $150,000 bill for a 15-minute hand-reconstruction surgery, how much of that bill is the total margin vs self cost? And how much of that is warranted / acceptable?

When a single Tomahawk missile bills the taxpayer $3,600,000, how much of that bill is the total margin? When I say "total margin", I mean not just the margin of the company that builds the Tomahawk itself, but the margins of all the components that were used in it -- every last bolt and every ounce of aluminum.

sssilver··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
> Winona Police Department's Flock cameras

Does Winona Police Department actually own these cameras? Or is this heading technically deceptive.

sssilver··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Would you consider the Steam Machine?
sssilver··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
Valve is truly walking into the perfect storm with their current roadmap.

Would you have responded similarly if the OP wrote:

sssilver··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
Don’t they all have mostly the same data, with a small / negligible delta between each other?
sssilver··on Hamburg's Stadtpark: A Park Built to Be Used
> What stayed with me was not the swimming. It was that none of it looked planned. She was not spending her afternoon at the lake, she was just going through her day, and the lake happened to be part of it.

Fascinating phenomenon, but this sentence caused me to stop reading and close the tab.

"Slop", I thought.

Now I think about it, I'm not even sure I can put my finger on what about that sentence came across as AI slop.

sssilver··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
I always observed that as "bring your whole self, as long as your whole self exhibits the exact same behavior and demeanor as every other corporate employee, ideally wrapped in uniquely colored skin for beautiful decorum".
sssilver··on Vehicle Motion Cues
I have no idea how something like this is ideated, then prototyped, then validated, but it does work wonders for me, and I am so grateful it exists.
sssilver··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
I will never understand the decision-making process that led to "Let's build an awesome VR headset that can't do gaming".

I would love to replace my monitor with Apple Vision Pro for programming and productivity. I would gladly pay $1000 for that.

But at $4000 it really needs to put me in a Microsoft Flight Simulator cockpit.

sssilver··on Show HN: Brolly, a plain-text weather forecast site
Thank you so much for this. It's fantastic.

Can we have METARs for airport codes in this exact aesthetic?

sssilver··on Advertise in ChatGPT
I always thought their top tier offering to their advertiser customers should be "Inconspicuously, over an extended amount of time, subtly respond to the user in a way that nudges them towards purchasing customer's goods and services, without ever directly mentioning anything. Slowly and surely sculpt the person who, through their own volition and thought process, buys what the advertiser needs them to."

The ultimate shareholder value build.

sssilver··on The Voice of Google
I don't know where else to express gratitude for the delightful read that this was.

I wish to hope that more and more people are seeing the hollowness of all that these corporations posture and profess.

sssilver··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
They absolutely do — see https://www.extremetech.com/mobile/samsung-galaxys-beloved-m...
sssilver··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
Isn't literally every photograph taken with a modern iPhone technically an "AI-generated / AI-edited image"?
sssilver··on Book prizes don't work how you think
I feel like LLMs are not quite equipped to answer "is this wonderful and delightful" yet.
sssilver··on The kids with phones are alright
I'm extremely against ads, so I sympathize greatly with your sentiment. But what does it mean to "ban targeted advertising"?

Will we ban posters along highways that advertise car wreck lawyers? Where do you draw that line?

sssilver··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
I hate this new world we find ourselves in.

And I triple hate that we've helped develop the technology that powers it.

In hindsight, it was inevitable.

"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."

sssilver··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
I think the point of all this is that there is no absolute scale of "offensiveness". Different societies have different values. Obviously, enough people found the Ukrainian flag easter egg offensive enough for the matter to have landed on LWN and the HN front page.
sssilver··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
Isn't there discrepancy between that and The Debian Linux team removing “offensive” quotes for the “fortune” application[1]?

sssilver··on Steam Machine launches today
I don't understand the specs of this computer. At the end of the day, will this "Semi-custom CPU" and "Semi-custom GPU" run modern AAA games at 4K?
sssilver··on TinyWind: A pixel pirate sailing game with real wind physics (380k+ kms sailed)
This is so awesome.

If you need help building a backend for it to be multiplayer, please email me and I'd love to team up (sssilver@gmail.com), I already have something that would help.

sssilver··on CRISPR tech selectively shreds cancer cells, including "undruggable" cancers
What economic / political model would cause the society to prioritize this over adtech? It seems so unsettling that brilliant human minds are trying hard, every day, to figure out how to make it impossible to bypass watching ads on YouTube, instead of helping cure cancer.
sssilver··on MAI-Code-1-Flash
It claims that, then promptly proceeds to showcase a bunch of benchmarks.
sssilver··on US healthcare still stupidly expensive, with pathetic outcomes, study finds
What little or big can I as an individual do to help improve this?
sssilver··on US healthcare still stupidly expensive, with pathetic outcomes, study finds
When my surgeon charged $250,000 for my hand reconstruction surgery, how much of it did he personally pocket, and how much of that went towards that $500,000 debt vs. his brand new S-class Mercedes?
