ssnistfajen··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
At least the outcome is favourable to the customer who was misled, and since Canada is a Common Law country, this ruling will establish a precedent for future corporate negligence with their chatbots in Canada.
ssnistfajen··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
If a human employee makes mistakes, the company will claim responsibility and in turn reprimand the human employee instead of claiming the human employee is its own "separate legal entity".

Idk about you but I would not consider AI-generated memories of my grandparents even remotely close to being an authentic experience whatsoever. One of my grandparents passed before I was born, so any synthetic depictions of us are fake. That frankly sounds like a post-apocalyptic experience, if not worse than that.

The e/acc camp will tell you AGI can solve all of those, which is why AI research needs to move as fast as possible. What they don't tell you is only an aligned AGI can solve it in a way beneficial for humans.

We had a half-assed lockdown for a few months where most people just kind of stayed indoors and saw noticeable environmental improvements world-wide. An unaligned AGI can easily conclude the best way to fix these problems is to un-exist all humans.

This is the same as slacklining over a ravine with no harness. Are the views epic? Yes. Does the adrenaline rush feel good? Yes. Are the consequences irreversible if you happen to mess up? Probably yes. The last point is why there's so much more doomerism compared to OpenAI's previous products. We don't have that harness and we don't know if we'll ever have it.

AI and AGI are practically two different concepts that most of the industry and the mainstream media are doing a poor job making the distinguishment between them.

Also, 100 slightly wonky houses will sell like hot cakes if each one costs less than 1/100th of a not-slightly-wonky house. People will buy 100 of them instead of 1 and just live in a different one every day/hour so they always notice the novel parts instead of the wonky parts. We've had mass manufacturing for centuries and they always prevail when the trade-offs are acceptable.

Isn't that basically what Stardew Valley is? Obv the creator isn't a suburban mom but the premise is very similar.

Yours is an optimistic take and frankly I do agree with most of it: there isn't an upper bound to economic opportunities as long as everyone gets to use the tools, since the cost/risk to produce something new will significantly decrease, this will boost the diversity of creative industries from which countless gems will be made. However the problem is what if everyone loses their current opportunities before these techs become widely available? How to handle the transition period? A monopoly/oligopoly is not going to care about helping the average person in accomplishing that transition, because it won't make their next quarterly earnings report look pretty.
ssnistfajen··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Why? Anyone paying taxes to the state has fully earned their right to exist, especially if the state has a welfare system.

Not having children isn't even a new concept. People have done it since time immemorial. What if they had multiple children and then lost them all to the statistically high child mortality rates? Were they being selfish by not furthering their lineage due to external circumstances?

ssnistfajen··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Birthrate by income levels is approaching a dumbbell distribution in industrialized nations. Lower income people have kids due to the lack of options, while ultra-high income people have kids due to the need for heirs (and they can afford to completely offload childcare to dedicated high-quality staff). Those in the middle are stuck because having children is a net negative to the continuation of career advancement, especially women due the unavoidable need for parental leave. The commitmments required to raising children, especially newborns, will disrupt travel plans which is a significant component of the typical middle class lifestyle. Childcare will also cost a significant sum of money, sometimes as much as mortgage payments in high CoL areas, without completely relieving the parents of their duties.
ssnistfajen··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Housing isn't the sole factor in declining birthrates. Every industrialized nation is going through the same phenomenon and not all of them are having housing crises. It's a combination of various associated costs to raising children (housing, early childcare, food, schooling, extracurriculars, hobbies, etc.) that have risen faster than most people's wages. The nuclear family model also significantly diminished the role of parents and other senior relatives in early childcare which would've created significant savings in terms of both time and money.

Also, living without children or even a partner at all has become significantly more viable in the past 40+ years or so. It wasn't until 1974 when women in the United States could unconditionally open bank accounts out of their free will: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Credit_Opportunity_Act. To not marry and have children would've practically been a form of ostracization. So many people, especially women, "settled" into marriage and family life simply because there was no other option. I think the decline in birth rates is a fair tradeoff to forcing fewer people into a lifestyle they did not want which would inevitably result in broken families and broken kids. What society needs to figure out is how to decouple productivity from raw human headcount, as well as how to avert potential humanitarian disasters that may occur when the decoupling happens.

ssnistfajen··on Vesuvius Challenge 2023 Grand Prize awarded: we can read the first scroll
I remember first reading about Herculaneum Papyri more than a decade ago, and pondered about them being read one day. After all, research into virtually unwrapping these scrolls had been ongoing since 2007 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herculaneum_papyri#Virtual_unr...), but I certainly did not expect it to happen so soon. Exponential technology acceleration once again proves itself true.

ssnistfajen··on Fluorite lenses: Corrective capabilities beyond ordinary optical glass
Because it's not really something that matters for the vast majority of consumer photography equipment.

https://istarscopeclub.proboards.com/thread/247/twisting-fac...

^Some 2012 forum post claiming the material cost $2000/kg, although their wording is ambiguous on whether this was the price for the raw material or the finished lens. But based on the manufacturing process described in the source link of this post, it would appear to be a much more cumbersome and complex process than manufacturing regular glass lenses. Fluorite lens are also more fragile which may impact yield %.

ssnistfajen··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
It's possible to negotiate bulk pricing. The billing is also based on the number of active days per user: https://slack.com/help/articles/218915077-Slacks-Fair-Billin..., so a 5000 member community doesn't necessarily mean they'll have to pay $7.25*5000 every month. But agreed Slack is generally a poor choice to host any non-profit-making organizations due to having to choose between either gated knowledge or allocating a hefty expense.

Discord is the better alternative for now due to the lack of content gating in the free tier but that might change when they become desperate enough with their profitability push.

ssnistfajen··on Rabbit: LLM-First Mobile Phone
Automated programs are not limited by stamina, attention span, sleep cycles, etc. so I don't think AIs being better at something is necessarily an indicator of failure for humans.

Dogs were used to rotate roasting spits in Britain during the Early Modern era: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnspit_dog Does this mean humans were inferior to dogs at the task? Absolutely not. It was just a more efficient alternative based on what was available to them at that point in time.

ssnistfajen··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
Do you have an actual argument or are you too comfortable with always invoking a boogeyman without assessing the situation?
ssnistfajen··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
What you are describing is radicalization. People who are doing fine don't get easily radicalized. Why are they being radicalized then? Because they are not doing fine. Why are they not doing fine? Because of the colonial legacy and France supporting the status quo by propping up corrupt oligarchs/dictators in many parts of Francophone Africa.

By instantly jumping to Russia/Wagner you are merely assisting radicalization by further antagonizing Africans. The USA tried to pin everything that went wrong since 2016 on Russia, did it fix anything? Look at any poll for 2024 and you shall have your answer.

ssnistfajen··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
Colloquial speech exists in every language and new learners usually aren't taught colloquial speech in a formal manner (hence their confusing upon actually interacting with speakers of that language). This isn't unique to French.
ssnistfajen··on The pro-Israel information war
What discourse you see online is entirely dependent on who you follow. TikTok is not force feeding you pro-Palestine content (and pro-Palestine ≠ pro-Hamas, people who are unironically pro-Hamas are not to be taken seriously since they usually come with other nonsensical takes on everything). Neither is Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, or any other platform where content is recommended based on user preferences. Don't like what you see? Close it or use whatever feedback function built-in to strongly signal your distaste, and the algorithms will recommend less of that. My tech twitter timeline was unusable for weeks after October 7 because many people I follow started posting pro-Israel messages nonstop, to the point where I had to mute them because it's not what I followed them for despite having sympathy for Israelis after the attack from Hamas.

I started getting ads obviously funded by the State of Israel and pro-Israel organizations on Youtube, on Twitter, on Instagram, and on TikTok (for a day or two). There were "Missing Person" posters of October 7th victims in my neighbourhood street which is located more than 10000+km from Israel (I feel bad for them and hope they will return home safe and sound, but what are these posters trying to achieve here in my neighbourhood? My local representative legislator is already supporting Israel and condemning Hamas). I'm not going to stop recognizing propaganda for being propaganda even if I mostly agree with its underlying message. That's a basic critical thinking skill and evidently that skill is lacking even mong highly successful and "intelligent" people on HN, tech Twitter, and so on.

ssnistfajen··on The pro-Israel information war
Paul Graham posted some figure of children deaths in Gaza since (after) October 7 and a bunch of tech twitter incl. some founders and VCs called him an antisemite. His only commentary on the figures was "grim". I think it's entirely fair for him to say those things out of empathy due to having children who are around the same age as many of these children in Gaza.
ssnistfajen··on An update on Twitch in Korea
Don't take creepshots of people in public and mandatory shutter sounds will no longer be a thing.

"Oppressive" policies exist because people can't behave. Simple as that.

ssnistfajen··on Fukuoka court rules ban on dual nationality is constitutional
The dysfunction is a common law system thing due to precedents being legally binding unless overturned. Japan uses the civil law system where legal precedents are not magical spells that control the outcome of a court ruling.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_law_(legal_system)#Diffe...

ssnistfajen··on An update on Twitch in Korea
The non-mutable shutter sounds exist for a reason, a good reason at that. It's not an oppressive policy.

Requiring phone numbers to sign up or activate accounts is increasingly common outside Korea as well.

ssnistfajen··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
>Google, FB and such are such money machines that they never have to cut.

Not sure what you are trying to achieve by saying something so blatantly untrue that a two-word query into any search engine can debunk it as fast as your browser loads a web page.

ssnistfajen··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
That is meaningless when the vast majority of users aren't paying and won't pay for the foreseeable future. Advertisers pay, and Elon is doing all he can to drive away advertisers. Ad quality on Twitter has severely degraded over the past two months and we all know why.
