squilliam··on A Knife Forged in Fire
Teflon is biologically inert. It's the stuff they use to make it stick to the knife/pan that you need to worry about.
squilliam··on Starlink Direct to Cell
Great fanfic material
squilliam··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> Blue areas aren’t states. They are cities. Democratic voting counties account for over 70% of the nations gdp. Conservative counties quite literally cannot support themselves.

But they can feed themselves.

squilliam··on Show HN: X11 tool to share a screen area in any video meeting
OBS has had the ability to do this for quite some time
squilliam··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
No there isn't. This is just unsubstantiated democratic fan fiction. Please stop spamming this link.
squilliam··on TDK claims solid state battery breakthrough
I was able to completely disable it in a new Ford vehicle with an OBD2 cable and since software on my laptop that can modify PCM values
squilliam··on ISS Docking Simulation
In that case, I'm not sure I want to be evacuated.
squilliam··on EU: Call to introduce common charger for all mobile phones
USB-C is overkill for just being a dumb power connector. I can buy average barrel-jacked PSUs for cheaper than a single USB-C PD cable! and then you have you pay for all the expensive USB PD components on the product as well just to support it.
squilliam··on What Will Happen in the 2020s
"appropriate cause" sounds ripe for abuse. Cops will be able to disable this "feature" in their personal cars, naturally. without consequence.
squilliam··on Turkey unveils first fully domestically-produced car in $3.7B bet on electric
German engineers during WWII seems to refute this claim. History shows that talented engineers drafted machines of mass murder with smile, as long as it would fund their departments and I'm sure there were other considerations in their decision to comply as well.
squilliam··on First all-electric seaplane takes flight in B.C.
A modern jet engine is just a shrouded propeller that happens to be powered by a jet turbine. An electric ducted fan would be the battery-powered equivalent.
squilliam··on Ring Gave Police Stats About Users Who Said No to Law Enforcement Requests
Less than a year according to the US Army and Microsoft.

>The IVAS Prototype Project seeks to provide a HUD 3.0 and integrated STE Squad capability within the Squad Architecture in support of Army, Marines, and Special Operations Forces within 24 months. The PPA shall deliver a baseline standalone STE Squad capability within 12 months, and STE Squad capability integrated into HUD 3.0 within 24 months. This complete IVAS capability shall be suitable to begin production as early as 4Q20 to ensure clear overmatch in Close Combat engagements and drastically increase Squad Lethality.

squilliam··on Where is Notepad in Windows 10? (2015)
Ruggedized keyboards for self-service kiosks don't typically have a windows key or ctrl, alt, and ESC (and if they do there is usually a hardware switch that disables them)
squilliam··on BrachioGraph – a cheap, simple pen plotter
Optical sensors will drift over short timescales so you will never have a repeatable "zero" point. it would probably work for small organic shapes but anything more geometric would not turn out well.
squilliam··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
>We also have a bunch of reasons (protected classes) that a company cannot refuse to do business. Colorado specifically includes sexual orientation in their definition of protected classes.

I don't think this is relevant to this specific case. The baker didn't refuse to do business with the gay couple. He was happy to sell them a generic off-the-shelf wedding cake.

He refused to sell them a personalized cake, which is considered a form of expression. The government cannot compel you to express yourself a certain way if it goes against your religious beliefs.

squilliam··on Apple’s New Mac Pro to Be Made in Texas
I'm pretty sure that it's referring to the requirements to state that a product is "Made in the USA". Typically it means that atleast 51% of the components are USA-sourced.

I think that Apple just got a waiver from the Govt to say the Mac Pro is "Made in the USA" despite not meeting whatever arbitrary guidelines to fulfill that requirement.

squilliam··on Michael Bloomberg launches $160M initiative to ban flavored e-cigarettes
>So, from my perspective, everyone except a few high level corporate people would be better off if we never got people addicted to smoking tobacco.

The tobacco trade was hugely influential to the development of the early US colonies. If there was no demand for tobacco, the early colonist would've most likely starved as the soil was not particularly suited for food crops, but they could at least trade tobacco for food.

squilliam··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
LinusTechTips on YouTube just uploaded a review of this machine and was extremely negative towards the keyboard.
squilliam··on NASA proposes new propulsion to cut Mars voyage to 3 days
It works great for lighter unmanned missions, but becomes less useful as you increase in mass. NASA has had to come up with some interesting solutions in order to land their rovers. Mars Pathfinder used a giant inflatable airbag to scrub the remaining speed it had when hit the martian surface(Lithobraking.) MSL Curiosity, after it jettisoned it's heat shield and parachutes, used a rocket-powered 'sky-crane' in order to slow down the last 200 MPH for a soft touchdown.

This is one of the reason SpaceX is focusing on rocket-powered landings of boosters and capsules vs. parachutes. This is a vital technology required to be able to put large amounts of mass on the surface of Mars

squilliam··on “Smartphone” is the wrong name
'feature phone' is already an industry term for (mainly) bottom-tier Android phones that lack the hardware to be considered among 'smart phones' but have the basic abilities to access the internet, and play basic media files. Basically the phones that come with the pay-as-you-go wal-mart phone plans.

squilliam··on 555 timer teardown: inside the world's most popular IC
I design and manufacture an electronic cigarette device that uses a 555 to PWM a MOSFET for variable power output. Super simple and robust but will be switching to MCUs soon for more features.
squilliam··on Chemical flavorings found in e-cigarettes linked to lung disease
Current generation e-cigs can supply up 200 watts just for vaporizing the E-liquid. That's almost 1/3 of a horsepower and can be used to create obnoxiously large clouds. Many 'Vape Shops' now even sanction tournament-style 'cloud competitions' where 2 participants stand back to back and try to blow the biggest/longest/thickest cloud: https://youtu.be/9oIo_nKOGlQ
