squiggy22··on The spat between Google and Australia, as reported on HN
I think a more fitting question is why should google showcase the ten megabyte page so far up the results. Perhaps because those ads that cause the bloat are likely served by them.
squiggy22··on The Airbnbs
I have market knowledge in this sector and can confirm the impact. Once the pandemic hit, Airbnb's from private landlords flooded the market due to travel nosediving.

squiggy22··on Carbon – Create and share images of your source code
Where the code is illustrative not intended on being literal copy paste, and the sharing of text without formatting hinders readability and illustrative intent
squiggy22··on Google Warns Developers That All New Android Apps Require 3 Days for Approval
Started dipping my feet in app development recently. To get an app onto an Internal track for testing purposes..you still need to get 'reviewed'. literally a hello world app needs human review that takes 3 days. That blows my brain. Not open to the web. just testers. 3 days. painful. and imo. broken.
squiggy22··on React Native Open Source Update
Is the colour and visual display of errors really considered a significant problem that prevents technology adoption? I must be getting old.
squiggy22··on ProseMirror – A toolkit for building rich-text editors on the web
Of note - the Guardian engineering team have moved away from their custom RTE over to this https://www.theguardian.com/info/2019/jan/24/leaving-scribe
squiggy22··on Tell Your Co-Workers How Much Money You Make
Its probably easiest to do this as a departing gift to colleagues you are leaving behind.
squiggy22··on How the Blog Broke the Web (2017)
The blog also did something else.. give non technical users a voice. Do we celebrate that or mourn for a web full of people just like us?

In the same way that Facebook killed blogging- once a better mousetrap for publishing comes along it finds an audience albeit the great technically unwashed.

squiggy22··on Vue Native
Yes. Its worse than terrible on a mobile. Going to see if its open source and put a pull in for it.
squiggy22··on Show HN: How to Tune a Guitar
I wish more people knew how to tune their beat by ear.
squiggy22··on In web design, everything easy is hard again
Innovation often has casualities and the pace of innovation of the front end particularly has exploded in the last few years combine that with mobile uptake and we have a whole can of soup on our hands. At the moment it feels like we havent quite settled on a proposed standard of build tools and processes which comes across as daunting but imo is also indicative of not reaching the absolute peak. Underneath it all we still have the fundamentals of html css and js and that aint gonna change anytime soon.. I only hope some of the tools we have for layouts settle soon as the browser landscape and chasms are only getting wider as mobile devices and iot throws a whole new can of worms at producing cross browser compatible applications. In my instances that fact alone is choking the web.
squiggy22··on Show HN: CodeOwl – Organize your notes, todos, and code snippets in one place
Very cool. Be nice to have it as a Chrome plugin just to open it quickly, or have it there all the time as a new tab.
squiggy22··on A letter about Google AMP
Once upon a time Matt Cutts used the example of 'a cure for cancer' marked up badly with poor HTML structure but providing the true result versus a well marked up site with the wrong info. Which should rank better?

The same IMO can be applied to speed as a factor. A slow site, (due to depth of content?) badly marked up but providing the correct result should outrank the fast site providing wrong info.

squiggy22··on Ask HN: Getting out of a long employment rut?
It sounds like you werent given the space and time to learn as a junior dev on a project that needed seniors. I'd recommend making some commits to open source to publically demo your skills which will prove youve learnt from early mistakes and show a commitment to learning new things.

squiggy22··on Ethereal Email – A fake SMTP service
Big fan of https://mailtrap.io
squiggy22··on Stripe Elements: Pre-built UI components to help you create checkout flows
..except you will end up with a 300kb js file and a massive Json file. Whilst this plugin generates magic your speed suffers with it.
squiggy22··on Facebook, You Needy Sonofabitch
I went cold turkey a while back, never looked back. Facebook is the digital equivalent of opening the fridge & staring inside, even though you're not hungry.
squiggy22··on Show HN: Page.REST – An API to fetch details from a web page as JSON
Not unlike YQL - https://developer.yahoo.com/yql/
squiggy22··on Inside continues to bet on email, the “largest social network”
Web based mail clients are nearly as bad with how much CSS etc. they strip out. Gmail is particularly aggressive. Yes Outlook is terrible, but there's plenty of security conscious developers throwing baby out with bathwater when it comes to email design .
squiggy22··on Ask HN: How do you keep your energy level up?
woah there conclusion jumpin cowboy. tired after work != automatic depression.

Get a full set of bloods taken. could be underactive thyroid or anything.

squiggy22··on Master Card, Cisco, and Scotiabank Join the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance
There's even evidence of vote manipulation on this very HN thread on the announcement over on Reddit.
squiggy22··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
Have you heard of http://nanowrimo.org

Find out where these people hang out including hashtags etc. Huge community of starter writers.

squiggy22··on Lyrebird – An API to copy the voice of anyone
you got a link anywhere?
squiggy22··on Spaces: A New Way to Connect with Friends in VR
oh great. now my kids have even less of a reason to go outside. thanks fb!
squiggy22··on Ask HN: Do you still use browser bookmarks?
I wish Google would create a separate index of all the stuff I bookmark, and provide it as a subset of the Google search experience. I too find myself Google searching for info Ive previously browsed.
squiggy22··on Ian's Shoelace Site
I love sites like this, that prove content wins out over everything else.
squiggy22··on Ask HN: Does anyone know what image recognition algorith the app “Foap” uses?
Google's Vision API FWIW unsurprisingly blows Clarifai out of the water.

squiggy22··on How Twitter deploys its widgets JavaScript
I have recently come across a bug in relation to this particular javascript widget. Once they dropped the requirement for widget IDs here:

https://blog.twitter.com/2016/embedding-twitter-timelines-ju...

Widgets no longer worked. So basically if you had widget IDs on data elements in HTML, the code no longer executed. Forced upgrade of the frontend code to match the JS requirements.

squiggy22··on Facebook visits pages that you post in messages and stays for many seconds
Correct. This is the open graph bot. You can force fb to scrape your site at will and clear the current cached image preview.
