spiritcat··on If Solar Panels Are So Clean, Why Do They Produce So Much Toxic Waste?
I was thinking more along the lines of, solar flare coinciding with massive earthquake causes multiple simultaneous Chernobyl's type thing.

"That also includes every nuclear disaster ever."

Assuming there won't be any disasters worse than what has already occurred.

Presumably any new nuclear capacity would use safer designs, but still, the tail end single event worst case scenario is a lot scarier.

Not sure what it is, but his lectures are amazing to go to sleep to. Thinks it's the voice.

Also really interesting stuff too.

spiritcat··on Experts Urge U.S. To Continue Support for Nuclear Fusion Research
So hypothetically, if all developed countries suddenly decided that it was worth whatever the cost, could we get to 100% renewable in say.. 10 years? How much of our activity would need to be directed at this? Not even research, if the plan was just make as much renewable energy as we can with current methods as fast as we can.

Of course this would never actually happen and we're in all likelihood gonna continue to trash the place, but is this possible even in theory?

Got to be at least partially offset by the likelihood of new code/major rewrites introducing vulns. Kinda curious how the numbers work out on this. Best to install patch updates but hold off on major versions by default?

the dependency is open source ya?

if upgrading is that bad can always (usually) patch it yourself

I spent all that time convincing my mom it was just as easy as facetime, and all for nothing after the stream kept cutting out the first time we tried it. Now we just facetime, which is the only reason I have an iPad.

Earth seems to be an extreme anomaly in an extremely violent and cold and hot and dead universe. I'd prefer not to test it's resilience.
spiritcat··on Monarch butterfly populations in U.S. west are down an order of magnitude
A Nuclear war/accident taking out most multi-cellular life would take more than a few million years to recover from. Then on those time scales sun's luminosity will start to shift, might not be time for intelligent life to evolve again.

spiritcat··on Flutter: the good, the bad and the ugly
I think I can more or less say that we would not have been able to build what we have without RN. At least not with same budget. There is a large class of apps that would suck @ in a webview but can get by just fine in RN with 90% cross-platform code re-use. If you're already a team of experienced react developers the learning curve mostly just comes down to learning how to resolve build issues. And possibly expo can take care of that depending on your app. (anyone actually use expo for real stuff?)

With RN + React Web + [PaaS/FaaS] I feel like a lone dev can be dangerous theses days.

Doesn't mean Flutter or PWA's won't obsolete it eventually, and I'm optimistic about Flutter's approach. Just saying that there's a reason RN is a thing.

spiritcat··on Google May Have to Get Used to Third Place in the Cloud
> Enterprise products and consumer products are very different and subject to different terms. Please do not consider them as the same thing.

Now watch as i consider them the same thing.

Personal anecdote: I had some basic question about their usage policy/pricing for one of their api's that was unclear in the docs. To get it answered by a real person was basically impossible. Our company does have a support contract, but only the person who controls the account is able to contact them. So to answer my simple question about making sure our usage was in-line with policy I'd have to go bug the bosses boss to ask them to forward my question to support and play the telephone game back and forth trying to interpret the answers.

Or try to contact sales since that's the only real person I could reach and have them answer my carefully and precisely worded question with a sales pitch.

Though, fwiw, we have been continuing to move stuff to gcp/gke despite my annoyances, and I do generally hold a positive view of the product.
