spingsprong··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Israel's Iron Dome defense work better?
Hitting a small very fast thing, with a small very fast thing, is hard.
spingsprong··on The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment of All Time
Nobody is going to make a malevolent universe controlling AI on purpose.

If a massively powerful and knowledgeable AI was created by accident, it would have nothing to gain by being malevolent.

And both those points don't matter anyway, since the technological singularity is impossible.

spingsprong··on The evidence that shows Iron Dome is not working
If it's not working, that's a pretty bad sign for the US ballistic missile defense system. I'm assuming it's easier to hit a Mach 3 Grad than a Mach 20 ICBM
spingsprong··on One second per second is harder than it sounds
It probably would have failed.

The Gulf War Patriot was designed to shoot down Mach 2 jets, not Mach 5 Scuds.

Detonating slightly late against an aircraft is actually a good thing, since it makes the Patriot explode near the aircraft's middle instead of its nose.

A Scud is a short range ballistic missile. Once it's burnt out its fuel, it just carries on under the influence of gravity. From that point on, the only important part is the warhead in the very tip of the nose.

Detonating by the mid section of a Scud means you're just shredding empty fuel tanks. And the huge speeds involved might actually make Gulf War Patriot missiles detonate against the rear of the Scud and just shred the non-functioning engine, or even detonate behind the Scud entirely.

"10 million words recorded during just under 200,000 trials"

So an average of 50 words per trial? I would have expected a higher number.

spingsprong··on No Russian
Can anyone seriously think of a reason why Ukraine, the Rebels or Russia would have downed that passenger plane on purpose?

Because I can't.

Whoever shot it down, obviously thought it was a military aircraft. They made a mistake.

If it's a mistake, it's not murder.

spingsprong··on Interactive real-time raytracing in WebGL
It crashes my browser.
spingsprong··on Ask HN: Why don't we use ICBMs for transportation?
I think the Russians get a bit twitchy when we start firing off ICBMs.

Also, they cost about seven million dollars each and one use only.

spingsprong··on Soviet Fighter – Shot Down Commerical Airline
Yes, in 1983 the Soviet Union shot down a passenger plane. And in 2001 Ukraine shot down a passenger plane. And in 1988 the USA shot down a passenger plane. You don't have to submit each one to this site.

Can't we just save time and post the wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airliner_shootdown_inci...

I'm just asking, but is there any chance the connection is the reverse?

And I was talking about incredibly primitive countermeasures.
spingsprong··on [dead]
The final section on the wikipedia page for "Iron Dome", has a few citations questioning the effectiveness of the system. I have no idea how accurate those sources are.

Even if those criticisms are incorrect, there are still blindingly obvious countermeasures that could be fairly easily be installed into the rockets that would reduce the effectiveness of Iron Dome.

So this success if it exists, could be short lived.

spingsprong··on Higher antioxidant, lower cadmium, and lower pesticide residues in organic crops [pdf]
Their top claim seems to be that organic food is higher in anti-oxidants.

Unfortunately, the idea that anti-oxidants are good for you has always been scientifically shaky, and as more studies have been done, it's increasingly looking like anti-oxidants may be unhealthy.

So, the message of this study is, avoid organic food?

spingsprong··on EXACTO demonstrates first-ever guided .50-caliber bullets
These bullets are not going to be used from a machine gun. It would make zero sense. They're for long range sniping.
spingsprong··on EXACTO demonstrates first-ever guided .50-caliber bullets
Drones don't use 50cal machine guns. What they use is missiles and bombs, and they've been guided for decades.
spingsprong··on A Chemical In Coffee, Fries, and Baby Food Linked to Cancer, Report Says
It's not surprising.

Life is water with a bunch of chemicals floating about in it. If you raise it to high temperature, those chemicals break apart or combine together to form new chemicals, some of which are harmful.

Smoked meat, burnt toast, burnt tobacco, whatever, they've all have been linked to health problems. It's the same principle.

Roughly map the topology of the ground in the background of a photo, then use clever algorithms to match that topology with real world maps of terrain.

Automatically match iconic buildings to those in a database.

Have a list of features that are different from nation to nation, or region to region, and match them. Electrical outlets, road signs, road markings, fire hydrant colors, and match them automatically.

Have a list of different geology. Light coloured rock in this region, reddish soil in that region, very flat terrain, very undulating terrain.

This is what comes to mind in one minute of thought. None of these would be effective on their own, but combined you could probably get surprisingly close.

spingsprong··on 100M Creative Commons Flickr Images for Research
Because of the inevitable photolocationfinder dot com that will immediately come into existence if they ever succeed.

Then everyone who hates someone or likes someone way too much, will only need a couple of photos from twitter or wherever, to know where to look for that person in real life.

Does this strike anyone else as being a bad idea?

spingsprong··on Open Rights Group has launched a UK Censorship Monitoring API and Botnet
I've been checking various websites I go on that are completely fine for kids. It's amazing what's getting blocked. One example according to that website is, TalkTalk blocks "http://www.writingexcuses.com/" It's a podcast that teaches story writing.

Blocking that is insane!

And the blocked website itself is blocked on two ISPs https://www.blocked.org.uk/results?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblocked....

spingsprong··on From India, Proof That a Trip to Mars Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank
Those rocks suffered a gigantic impact, a long period in the vacuum of space being bombarded by radiation, then a fiery re-entry.

I don't know for sure, but wouldn't that be a pretty effective way of sterilising rock?

spingsprong··on The Economics of Star Trek (2013)
Replicators can't replicate everything.

Many episodes have had characters complaining about replicated food not tasting as good as the real thing. And many episodes have star ship crews trying to obtain Dilithium.

So obviously some things aren't replicable, and many things that are replicable are only replicable at a lower quality.

spingsprong··on Ebola Zaire + USA Immigration Centers = Utter Disaster?
It has a fatality rate of UP TO 80-90%. Some outbreaks it's been as low as 35% and the current outbreak in west Africa has a 65% fatality rate.

Ebola isn't super contagious. Way, way more people die from the flu every single year than have died from Ebola ever.
