spilk··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Wunderground. Whatever they've done to the site in the past few years is just terrible.

I still have an unopened bottle, it does not look very tasty anymore though.
spilk··on ARM releases free Cortex-M processor cores for FPGAs
so how many LE's do these cores consume compared to a similar RISC-V or any other CPU design? Are there advantages just beyond familiarity of ARM?
spilk··on When Blockbuster Video Tried Burning Game Cartridges on Demand
They did do this for SNES:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Power_(cartridge)

Obviously it was limited to games that did not use enhancement chips as you mention.

spilk··on When Blockbuster Video Tried Burning Game Cartridges on Demand
Nintendo did this extensively in Japan, first with the Disk Writer for the Famicom Disk System and then later with Nintendo Power kiosks for Super Famicom and Gameboy.

spilk··on Intel can’t supply 14nm Xeons, HPE recommends AMD Epyc
I'm not super familiar with HPE's product lines but I'm just kind of surprised they are still using the Apollo name.

Maybe we'll see some Silicon Graphics branded HP gear too?

spilk··on The Life and Times of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (2014)
Wouldn't you have needed to use a Japanese text encoding (JIS?) and a corresponding font to get the "tsu" (ツ) kana in pre-Unicode days?
spilk··on Why Use an FPGA Instead of a CPU or GPU?
some have the configuration memory on-die as well to keep part count down. Also good to help protect your bitstream, but this isn't infallible of course.

spilk··on Yes, Amazon Is Tracking People
I guess we will all have to wear a full face of juggalo makeup to remain anonymous in public from now on.
spilk··on A yak shave with SGI's EFS
Good to see some folks using my 'irixboot' utility in the wild. Looks like it worked!

Also, the whole process by which the Development CD image is extracted could have been easily handled by irixboot and you can use irixboot as a 'dist' install source within the already-installed OS.

spilk··on AI chip startup Wave to buy Silicon Valley old-timer MIPS
I think rms famously used one of those. Lemote Yeelong with the Loongson CPU.
spilk··on AI chip startup Wave to buy Silicon Valley old-timer MIPS
Crazy to think about the range of devices the architecture supported, from small battery-powered things to giant multi-rack SGI Onyx machines.

I'm still impressed with my dual-R12000 Octane today.

spilk··on GitHub XP – GitHub Windows XP Theme
I miss the days of the Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines and when Apple actually more-or-less conformed to them.
spilk··on America’s Teens Are Choosing YouTube Over Facebook
I don't really use it to communicate with people I actually know anymore, but I'm a member on several Facebook hobby/interest related groups (of strangers) that I enjoy. Also some local neighborhood groups. I do occasionally peruse the Marketplace but haven't actually completed any transactions using it.

This is what makes Docker for Windows useless to me.

can this do 2x 4K @90Hz? e.g. for VR headsets.
spilk··on Bitcoin Blows Past $9,000
I see a lot of similarities in the kind of people that get pulled into Amway/Herbalife/etc and Bitcoin people.

spilk··on [dead]
Probably possible in New York City and San Francisco (proper), but nowhere else.
spilk··on AthenaX – Uber Engineering’s Open Source Streaming Analytics Platform
Putting "X" and "Athena" together just makes me think of the Athena Widgets (Xaw) toolkit for X11.
spilk··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Microsoft build its own Android “fork”?
I think this is roughly how Amazon's FireOS fork works.
