I'm confused. What's the age definition of child? 12, 15, 18? Does this mean its against the law for children to install an operating system? What is the penalty for a child doing this and putting the wrong age or just doing it at all? What is the penalty for a parent or guardian of the child that does this? What happens to the parent or child if the child circumvents this control? Will child services be involved? Criminal penalties? Of course the only way to know an adult is the administrator is to tie the users government I'd to the account. Could this be done in some zero knowledge anonymous way? Sure, but I don't think it's likely. This seems to be the thin end of yet another wedge. The trend seems to be to be that we should be identified and survield every moment of our lives. The question is who does this surveillance serve? How much access do you have to your government or employer's data or advertisers or educators or ...? How does their access serve you?
spigottoday··on The normalization of corruption in organizations (2003) [pdf]
Corruption empowers, and absolute corruption empowers absolutely. It seems to me that some people adopt this perspective.

In Philadelphia PA wait staff in restaurants are paid less than $3 an hour. Yes they get tips. So does the wait staff in NYC that get $15 an hour. I was told this by my daughter who worked in both places. Any discrepancy with the $ is mine.

I have a typewriter written manuscript that is interspersed with hand written editing. Tesseract worked fine until the hand written part, then garbage. Is there a local solution that anyone can recommend? I have a 16gb lenovo laptop and access to a workstation with a with an RTX 4070 ti 16gb card. Thanks.
spigottoday··on Her dad, the 10k records he left behind and a viral lesson in grief
You might want to try non commercial listener supported wbgo.org if you like jazz and blues, for example. There are others. This is a local station, so as a bonus, there is no surveillance when I listen over the air.
spigottoday··on Ask HN: Recommend a sci-fi movie I can watch on the new year's eve
Zardoz is definitely SF. The Dark Backward probably doesn't quite fit the category, but has some awsome world building going on and an A list cast.
spigottoday··on The unbearable slowness of being: Why do we live at 10 bits/s?
It seams interesting to me that what we refer to as the conscious mind is unconscious a third of each day and the part we call unconscious is active 24 by 7.

Cheap and cutting corners might be better described as externalizing costs. As we know increasing shareholer value trumps all. That being said our civilization would have to roll back to something like the 1800s level of technology. I'm not advocating for this, medicine and transportation can not exist without plastic, but our clothing furniture and rugs and other items don't have to be. And plastic recycling doesn't have to be a joke. But we can't expect shareholders to interalize those costs and not get as rich as fast as possible, can we? After all it will be someone else who will be affected by the wanton distraction of the environment.
spigottoday··on Too few people donate their organs, dead or alive. How can we make it easier
I'm in the US. When I was obtaining medical power of attorney for a family member my attorney advised me to not opt for organ donation because if they don't use the organ, the donor or the estate will be charged for the removal, storage and disposal. This should be in bold print at the top of the form. If donation drops as a result maybe the medical establishment shoudn't do that.
spigottoday··on Paying People to Have Children
>population goes to zero.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

>A possible solution to the fertility problem that has not been tried yet is paying families a real lot of money — a can’t-ignore-it amount of money — to have children. Millions of dollars!

If you do a search on this: "children food insecurity usa" you might find we seam to have a problem feeding the ones we have. This could be part of the problem. We might like to break off some $$ for the kids, and maybe for housing and job training too.

spigottoday··on Don't Fire People for Making Pornography in Their Free Time
I agree! They could be making movies like Winnie the Pooh, Blood and Honey or maybe the Saw movies. Lots of creativity there and no law against it. Probably wouldn't have been fired. But people-a husband and wife pleasuring each other? Intolerable! And while we are at it, you know that statue of David? Put some pants on it!

spigottoday··on Banks use your deposits to loan money to fossil-fuel, emissions-heavy firms
Then where do our deposits go? If not loans to these companies are they investing in them by buying stock or something? The sum of deposits the bank holds are not available for withdrawl all at once. So where is it?
spigottoday··on OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model
In the Monkey selfie copyright dispute Slater could not claim copyright because he did not operate the camera. Corporate personhood or juridical personality is the legal notion that a juridical person such as a corporation, separately from its associated human beings (like owners, managers, or employees), has at least some of the legal rights and responsibilities enjoyed by natural persons. If Mr. Slater was incorporated would his copyright ownership be clear? If an ai was a corporation not an asset of a corporation and could prompt it's self would the output then be copyrightable? There are a lot of ifs in there but still interesting.
spigottoday··on Rogue superintelligence: Inside the mind of OpenAI's chief scientist
An llm is a database modelled on the concept of a neural (the tissue in our heads) net (because our neural tissue appears to be highly interconected like a net). An llm is a very interesting and complex tool that the creators and many users anthropomorphize this shit out of. Llm's are a spherical cow, a statistical model of a very poorly understood organ and difficult to define process; intelligence. Do we "prompt" our sql databases? When our querry results are incorrect is the database hallucinating? As amazing and usefull as these new ai tools are they are it seems to me they are no more intelligent or conscious than a hammer or guitar or the computer your using right now. I thinks a usefull perspective to apply to ai is competence. To clarify this I will compare an llm to a flea. A flea has a neural network that outperforms any hardware used for ai. Fleas eat, mate, avoid preditors and probably exibite a great deal of complex behavior that we are not aware of. Fleas are highly intelligent competent actors opperationg in a complex environment. Llms are not actors any more than a hammer or a sql database is and only an actor can be competent. I will agree that in most cases llms have more utillity than fleas. Consciousness seems alot more slippery than intelligence which is hard enough by itself.

spigottoday··on Ask HN: Advice/Recommendation for Therapist that works with IT contractors?
Seems like your therapist is not a good fit for you.there are a lot of theraputic modalities, some are directive and some people want that. Seems like you don't. See if you can find a therapist that's a better fit, someone who will help you explore and clarify your feelings might be better.
spigottoday··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
I don't like being recorded all the time when out in public or in stores or hospitals or other places or institutions. The thing that I find completly unacceptable is having the recording sent off to meta or google or somewhere to be analyzed and monetized without my consent. Not only do I not benefit from this I consider it a profound abuse of my privacy and autonamy. before all this invasive corporate surveillance being seen in public was a localized and ephemeral experience and privacy laws were adequate to cover this. This is no longer true. Not that I think this will happen any time soon (or ever) because, you know, money; and not enough people outraged about this or that feel safe enought to express thier outrage, but a simple fix would be that if I am not a consenting user of a corporate service like meta or google or ticktock or whatever then that service is not permited to retain or use that (personal) information in any way. So when the service recieves video it must remove or completely obsure any individuals image and audio from the video that are not current users of the service. Better yet and more feasible would be to just flag and delete the video, which puts the burden on the person making the video, where it belongs. Of course this would apply to any and all information conected to all non users of the service. To motivate compliance an automatic award of, let's say, $10,000 to an abused party would probably do the trick. If this sounds extream to you I just consider it a good start.

If there are less people shouldnt there be more empty and available housing? If the cost of housing is high because investment companies have purchased all of the vacant housing and jacked the price put a hefty (monthly ?) tax on vacant housing that is not sold or rented in 3 months. Somewhat more affordable housing becomes available to people that requier a house to raise a family in. Lower the price to something people can afford or pay the empty housing tax. Could work for commercial properties as well.
