species9606··on Airspace over Lake Michigan restricted due to national defense
The US bombs the air defense, then it bombs whatever else.
species9606··on Airspace over Lake Michigan restricted due to national defense
Relevant interview with Senator Schumer: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/3-objects-flying-us-canada-b...

He's claiming they're all balloons, and that recovering them has been an intelligence windfall for the US - and Schumer would be in a position to know that. Then again, Schumer has seemed to have an obvious anti-China bias in recent years.

species9606··on Vox Media lays off 7% of staff
“Roughly 1,900 people work at the company”

Doing what?

species9606··on HBO Max’s Great Looney Tunes Purge
Not to worry, HBO Max has replaced all that with “Velma.”
species9606··on 'Oumuamua: An analysis of the debate regarding the first interstellar visitor
There aren’t any resources in interstellar space. It’s a near-perfect vacuum and the temperature is a uniform 3 Kelvins.
species9606··on 'Oumuamua: An analysis of the debate regarding the first interstellar visitor
> I read somewhere (don't remember where) that if a ship constantly accelerates in space, it can reach another star system in a few decades and another galaxy in less than a century.

The problem is, it also has to slow down and stop at the destination. To do that, it would have to take all the deceleration fuel with it, and the amount of fuel needed goes up exponentially with the amount of deceleration required.[1] There’s no known or even theoretical form of propulsion with the specific impulse needed to get us to the next star system in under 600 years.

species9606··on Fun, danger, and 70s airplane toys
Yes, I had one, and it was awesome. The thing went high enough to disappear from view, then gyro’ed safely back to earth.
species9606··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
Meta comment, I love HN for comments like this. Collectively, this website is a super-brain that’s far more impressive than any language model.
species9606··on Do you think Binance will colapse?
Binance will likely be subject to clawback of the funds FTX used to buy them out. If they can still be fully liquid after surrendering $2 billion, they just might make it - assuming the rest of their balance sheet is legitimate and accurate.
species9606··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
As CZ has said repeatedly, they’re not a Chinese company. If the CCP bails them out, they’ll have an entirely new set of reputation problems.
species9606··on WeWork’s once robust cash reserves have dwindled, raising chances of default
I predict Binance will collapse before the end of this year.
species9606··on Female spies of MI6
Right near the CalTech campus, there was a barbershop owned and operated by a sole older gentleman. You’d sit down, tell him what you wanted, and he’d give you a magazine (often Scientific American) and cut your hair in silence. It was perfect.
species9606··on How you would die on each major celestial body in the solar system
Yeah, this chart didn’t really make much sense. I think it’s mostly a setup for the “Tories” joke.
species9606··on A software change allowed FTX to use client money
You have a point, but you may be thinking of the CDOs they and other sold, knowing that they were full of risky mortgages but laundering them through overly-chummy ratings firms.
species9606··on Tianeptine, or ‘gas station heroin,’ causes intense withdrawals
Yes, we had a neurosurgeon run for the Presidency who, according to experts, had some foolish tax policies he wanted to implement. You don’t hear me making pronouncements on tax policy, because I don’t know enough about it. Nor should a “harm reduction counselor” try to make authoritative statements about neurological pharmacokinetics and the like.

Seems like you didn’t quite think that analogy through.

species9606··on Tianeptine, or ‘gas station heroin,’ causes intense withdrawals
“state certified harm reduction counselor here”

Which means almost nothing. Unless you’re a pharmacologist, or a neuroscientist (as I am), please refrain from giving scientific opinions in this field.

species9606··on Tianeptine, or ‘gas station heroin,’ causes intense withdrawals
“VICE News reached out to several manufacturers and retailers that sell tianeptine to ask for comment on the health concerns surrounding the drug but did not receive a response.”

Name them. Why not?

species9606··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
Indict them too. There’s every indication that they were beneficial participants of the scheme.
species9606··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
The reputation washing will have a mixed effect, since he’s portraying himself as both innocent and incompetent. Not sure I’d do business with someone like that.
species9606··on The mid in fake midcentury modern
You should watch “The Unbrellas of Cherbourg” to experience a world absolutely full of color, color everywhere, and more beautiful because of it. Not every city has to have the same chromatic sensibility as men’s business wear.
species9606··on Caterpillar offers phone with built-in FLIR camera
The term originated in avionics, I believe with the F-16. Before that, IR imaging was top-down, something mounted under spy and reconnaissance planes.

species9606··on FTX Contagion
I’d say that’s true up to a point, and that point is when unsophisticated customers watch an FTX commercial during the Super Bowl and then send $10K into SBF’s pocket. Those people are innocent.
species9606··on What in the Ethereum application ecosystem excites me
That would be terrific, certainly. MC and Visa fees in the US are outrageous, though Congress seems to finally be taking a look at this.

I wonder, though, if there’s an inevitable tradeoff between efficiency and decentralization? The credit card companies are highly centralized, but their services are so efficient and reliable that they’re practically invisible.

species9606··on AirDrop is now limited to 10 minutes
If you can afford one, which most people can’t.
species9606··on ‘Gaslighting’ is Merriam-Webster’s word of the year for 2022
Merriam-Webster, 2023: “No it wasn’t, we never said that.”
species9606··on Lab-Grown Meat Is Safe to Eat, FDA Says
It is a solved problem, UPSIDE (and I believe one other company) now have animal-component-free medium.
species9606··on Lab-Grown Meat Is Safe to Eat, FDA Says
This is wrong. UPSIDE’s meat is grown in animal component free medium. That’s one of their key innovations.
species9606··on The AI war and how to win it
Exactly this. The "AI race" is yet another nuclear arms race, where the American public is terrified into believing in some sort of (nonexistent) capabilities gap, and the only way to avoid utter defeat is to funnel billions, eventually trillions, of dollars to the right companies.
species9606··on Launch HN: Kalshi (YC W19) – A regulated exchange for trading on events
I added an edit, indicating that this thread already has quite a bit of it.
