spanktheuser··on Why Scandinavian Cabins Stayed Warm at -30°F While Modern Homes Freeze [video]
Not to mention that a few centuries of building log cabins (and to be fair, ships) nearly completely denuded Europe of trees.
spanktheuser··on Illinois man has spent 40 years rebuilding a WWII-era B-17 bomber in his barn
Well well… had no idea this was going on a few miles from me.
spanktheuser··on Sleep apnea pill shows striking success in large clinical trial
>>Can these 22% be identified based on some criteria?

Usually the preferred approach in cases like this is to trial the medication and revert back to the prior treatment plan if symptoms worsen. Obviously, this is only viable if the worst-case negative outcome is temporary, easily reversible, and not life threatening.

spanktheuser··on In Memoriam: John L. Young, Cryptome Co-Founder
I miss the sense of possibility, anarchy, and resistance of the early internet. RIP.
spanktheuser··on Jeep owners fed up with in-car pop-up ads
Michael Moore did something very close to this in the mid-90s for his briefly-lived TV Nation. Parked a series of cars in front of the home of a car alarm company CEO and set them off.
spanktheuser··on CIA now favors lab leak theory to explain Covid's origins
My priors include none of the agencies having expertise in epidemiology.
spanktheuser··on A $12k Surgery to Change Eye Color Is Surging in Popularity
What about food addicts? It’s well understood that drive negative health outcomes and costs and are under the control of anyone with a decent income. Want ozempic to treat your diabetes? Submit your grocery store purchase history for analysis.
spanktheuser··on Secret Service Says Users Agreed to Location Tracking in Terms and Conditions
>The Secret Service told 404 Media in an email last week it is no longer using the tool.

Given that parsing non-denial-denials is journalism 101, I wonder at 404’s studious incuriosity about the Secret Service statement. Here are some questions I would ask the Secret Service on the record if this was my story.

1. Does the Secret Service use other tools, partners or methods to collect location data on Americans without establishing probable cause and obtaining a warrant?

2. Does the secret service collect the location data of all Americans, or does it target certain groups in particular? If the latter, how does the service decide who to target?

3. What other crimes become non-crimes if the private company hired to commit them gets the victim to check a box labeled “I agree to the terms of service” prior to watching a funny cat video?

4. Hypothetically speaking, is it now legal for me to start the “uber for loansharking” if my terms of service indicate that the penalty for late payment is kneecapping by non-employee gig muscle?

5. Can the secret service identify my source for this story by determining who i’ve been meeting for lunch at the Holiday Inn every Friday for the past two months? If so will your wife be in a lot of trouble?

spanktheuser··on Archiving "The Famous Computer Cafe"
I was one of those people. Or months at least along with a group of my high school friends. Most of the infocom games took between a few weeks to a few months of obsessive game play to get through & we played them all.
spanktheuser··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
I imagine you’d need circumstances similar to those that nearly resulted in the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937, which would have granted Roosevelt the ability to appoint 6 additional Supreme Court Justices. Namely:

- National crisis unifying popular support for liberal legislation. - Liberal control of the executive and legislative branches. - A series of supreme court rulings that effectively thwart a popular liberal agenda.

I have no idea if this is likely; however it nearly happened less than a century ago during a period with noticeable parallels to our circumstances today.

spanktheuser··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
Long term, I wonder if this destroys the Supreme Court. I see no reason why a future liberal majority would feel bound by any conservative precedent in the future. Replace respect for precedent with whatever position wins a majority and the incentive to pack the court seems irresistible.
spanktheuser··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
Privately-owned ebikes are enormously popular in Chicago and surrounding suburbs fwiw.
spanktheuser··on Faxes From the Far Side (2015)
Damn Interesting feels like the last vestige of the golden age of the Internet. While simultaneously being the best podcast still going today.
spanktheuser··on Martin-Baker Ejection Seat Made Its First of 7,722 Saves 75 Years Ago Today
My dad used to know a marine fighter pilot who survived an ejection at mach 1.2. Each leg broke in four places and the soles of feet were pressed flat against his chest hard enough to break many of his ribs. But the seat worked and was certainly responsible for saving his life.
spanktheuser··on How do our brains adapt to control an extra body part?
If anyone needs further convincing, remember that the journey from power user to experiencing disability is inevitable (age-related sensory & skeletal-muscular decline) and in some cases, abrupt (traffic accident, keyboard/mouse related RSI). We all eventually benefit from accessibility features.
spanktheuser··on Ibiza locals living in cars as party island sees rents soar
The solution to being priced out a market is impoverish the island until is homes are affordable again. A general strike should do the trick.
spanktheuser··on Novo Nordisk facing pressure as study finds $1k drug can be made for $5
>This is a diabetes drug.

It was developed as a drug that increases insulin response, but it also appears to have a substantial impact on CNS processes controlling food cravings and other types of desire.

Given that, it’s possible we’ve stumbled upon the mechanism responsible for genetic differences in how we put on weight, whether that’s appetite, metabolic differences or both.

spanktheuser··on The Pentagon's Silicon Valley Problem
And it wasn’t even the most expensive. The Norden Bomb Sight cost slightly more than the Manhattan Project. B-29 development and production cost nearly 3x the cost of the fission bomb.
spanktheuser··on The case for single-stair multifamily
I’m curious whether this is really the issue in most US cities. In Chicago we achieve significant density with a two staircase requirement. If the goal is to unlock greater density in Manhattan I accept that single-stair multifamily may be necessary. However, it seems to me that the greater need is to bring more density to urban areas such as Houston, Dallas and Phoenix. All of which seem to have ample opportunity for increasing density in a manner that preserves multiple egress options.
spanktheuser··on Why Would I Buy This Useless, Evil Thing?
For those of you who argue that a device like this is useless I urge you to visit someone with Parkisons, essential tremors, ALS, rheumatoid arthritis, limb injuries etc as well as very low vision and observe the difficulty they have interacting with the vision + multi-touch interface of their phones.
spanktheuser··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
I think its fair to say I misread the thrust of your argument. I still come down on the other side; I am comfortable enforcing a widespread deprivation of a convenience in order to further reduce the risk of a rare but catastrophic outcome.
spanktheuser··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
In this case, however, the impact is knowable:

Furthermore, distracted or unprepared passengers impact the evacuation of others trapped behind them. I’ve participated in evacuation training for flight attendants and have personally witnessed how a bungled jump down evacuation slide led to a 5-10 second delay. This was equated with ~20 fatalities due to smoke inhalation in the simulation.

spanktheuser··on 2nd City Zoning
Like foresight.
spanktheuser··on Tesla drivers run Autopilot where it's not intended – with deadly consequences
Possibly because there are circumstances in which speeding is necessary? I’ve been the driver and the passenger in a vehicle being driven to a distant emergency room. In both cases speed of arrival was of the essence.
spanktheuser··on Max Headroom Signal Hijacking
You, sir, are the hero we didn’t know we needed.
spanktheuser··on Candela P-12 taking off – Electric hydrofoiling passenger vessel [video]
I have taken a several hour hydrofoil ride in the Mediterranean in moderate swells.

The ride is deeply nauseating as the foils are positioned towards the outside corners and (on this 200+ passenger craft) catch the swells independently. The result a ride with similar pitch and roll as a traditionally-hulled ferry, with far more yaw and far less periodicity.

spanktheuser··on Ensō: write now, edit later
Every ad / design agency I’ve worked for engages in this practice. Futhermore, in the large corporate rebranding exercises I’ve witnessed approximately 75% of the engagement consists of make-work designed to justify the price.

From a purely psychological perspective I find it fascinating. If you want to get a handle on how it looks IDEO is a company that publishes and speaks on ”process” quite prolifically. Keyword: “Design Thinking.”

spanktheuser··on Quadcopters can now visually track targets more effectively
This puzzle is really starting to fit together nicely but SO FRUSTRATING that I still can’t tell whether it’s an image of Skynet or Big Brother.

Perhaps if I add one more piece…

spanktheuser··on Ask HN: Would you have a surgery that only increased 5yr survival to 25%?
Something to factor into any decision is that the 5 year survival rate is based on a cohort of individual diagnosed 5 years ago. During a period of rapid advances in treatment this data may be unduly pessimistic.
spanktheuser··on The whole of the Whole Earth Catalog is now online
I still have my copy of Future Cities and a few more of that ilk. Perhaps it’s time to dig them out of the dusty reaches of my bookshelf.
