Collision detection is a major reason. If you only sample positions at the frame rate, you're going to have bullets go through walls without hitting anything.

Also, physics is costly to run, so usually it's not run on every frame.

Can I just say I'm so envious of all of you who are able to write publicly without worries?

I did try to start a blog many, many years ago, but I can never get over my fears that whatever I put out publicly will inevitably be used against me, by someone with power, in one way or another. (Yes, including this comment.)

spacehunt··on Riding London’s unexpectedly fantastic Elizabeth line
The MTR was designed 100 years after the first subsurface lines in London; you'd expect them to have avoided at least some of the mistakes. Also, they don't have to worry about funding by holding a property development monopoly around their stations, amongst other factors.

Give them a train network that's almost as old as London's to run (example: Melbourne), and they are just as bad as any other operator.

You can't simplify a double negative like that, when there's more than 1 bit of information. "They are [not] noticeably worse than others" can mean any one of the following:

- They are worse, but not noticeable

- They are on par with others

- They are slightly better than others

- They are much better than others

- They are the best among others

Unfortunately I think it's a mistranslation.

None of the Chinese language media reports him calling it a "war", but instead only a "conflict".

spacehunt··on Google could have updated the Pixel 3 until Android 13, it just didn't want to
I have the S9 too. What was unexpected was that it still received monthly updates for 3 years and then down to quarterly updates after that. (Samsung did not promise anything and the usual practice was updates for 2 years *at the time when I bought it*).

S9: https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-G9600/TGY/doc.html

Note 9: https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-N9600/TGY/doc.html

You can see they still received updates this month.

spacehunt··on Google could have updated the Pixel 3 until Android 13, it just didn't want to
I'm mainly taking issue with the original claim of "No Android phone maker can even make this guarantee for more than 2 years."

I don't really care what Apple does because I'm not in the market for iOS phones.

With regards to non-flagship models, Samsung is providing 3 years of updates for the A52, which still beats the grandparent comment's claim.

spacehunt··on Google could have updated the Pixel 3 until Android 13, it just didn't want to
Do you have proof? My Note 20 Ultra (released in 2020) received 3 updates in the past 35 days -- and this is for a region that's trailing Europe and the US in terms of updates.

spacehunt··on Why is the Zoom app listening on my microphone when not in a meeting?
Not sure what you're expecting here. Do you want their installer to, depending on where it's installing Zoom, be able to 1) directly modify files inside the app bundle, or 2) install an entirely different app bundle?

spacehunt··on What's the most efficient language?
Once I took look at the original passages used, it's clear what went wrong. The "Cantonese" passage is neither in colloquial Cantonese, nor in proper modern standard Chinese. It just reads like a poorly machine translated jumble of characters.

Traditional Chinese:

> 當您開始使用 Google 服務,即表示您信賴我們對您個人資訊的處理方式。我們深知這份責任重大,因此會盡力保護您的資訊,並為您提供相關的管理功能。本《隱私權政策》旨在協助您瞭解 Google 收集的資訊類型以及收集這些資訊的原因,也說明了您可以如何更新、管理、匯出與刪除資訊。

"Cantonese":

> 在您使用我們的服務時,您將個人資料托付給我們。我們明白這項責任重大,因此我們會盡力保護您資料,並確保一切由您做主。此《私隱權政策》旨在讓您瞭解我們收集的資料類型、原因和更新、管理匯出以及刪除資料的方法。

Here are a few problems that immediately jumps out just from an initial reading:

* The Cantonese version uses "us"/"our services" instead of fully spelling out "Google"

* Cantonese speakers don't usually use 您 as it is pronounced the same as 你

* "Data" is usually 資料 and not 資訊; similarly for 了解/瞭解 and a few others

* Finally, the grammar and particles/conjunctions used would be totally different if colloquial Cantonese really is desired.

spacehunt··on Automatically detecting and replying to recruiter spam
The truth is they probably don't know. These days the process of guesstimating an email address behind a LinkedIn profile is highly automated. Very often what a recruiter see on their dashboard is basically a list of potential candidates' LinkedIn profiles, paired with a list of plausible email addresses for each of them (with no indication of how the bots got them in the first place).
spacehunt··on Automatically detecting and replying to recruiter spam
Quite often, it's easier for recruiters to get at your email address from GitHub because it's increasingly difficult to scrape contact details off LinkedIn.
