spacehunt··on A mistake that killed Japan's software industry? (2023)
It doesn't work fine for Korean and Chinese either, we just accept it begrudgingly.

Check out the Noto Sans CJK fonts repo[1], as of now it has five variations: Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hong Kong. There wouldn't be a need for so many variations if Unicode works perfectly.

But Unicode is already infinitely better than what existed before, so as I said above, we just kind of accept it begrudgingly.

spacehunt··on Flags Are Not Languages
Hong Kong people speak Cantonese, and there is no "Canton" flag. (Hong Kong does have its own flag, but sometimes people want to show only "country-level" flags and well...)
spacehunt··on Show HN: We built the fastest spreadsheet
Is there a way to push data into it, rather than have it pull data from data sources? I have some use cases where users want <3s latency from source data updates to the display being refreshed. For reference, I managed to get to ~10s using Google Sheets' API.
spacehunt··on Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective
The transmission tunnel indeed is an issue, but they do use it as additional space for batteries to make the seating position a bit better for the rear left/right passengers.
spacehunt··on Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective
The XC40 was in the middle of a refresh which might explain the waiting time. Availability should be much better now, and MY24 has some really nice upgrades.
spacehunt··on Show HN: IP Guide – Info on IP addresses, Networks, and ASNs
Reverse DNS does not give you all the hostnames that can point to a particular IP address though.
spacehunt··on Binance founder Changpeng Zhao agrees to step down, plead guilty
You don't have to put all 10,000 BTC in a single wallet.
spacehunt··on I visited over 120 EV chargers: why so many were broken
Interesting. Here in Hong Kong, apparently the non-Tesla chargers work so well, the Superchargers often lie empty because most Teslas charge at non-Tesla chargers as they are usually cheaper.
spacehunt··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Speak for yourself. I would pay for RiF to add HN support, while I couldn't care less about other clients, including Apollo.
spacehunt··on Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud (2021) [video]
Living in Hong Kong, I'll tell you what's loud: the constant remodelling, both in apartment and office buildings. Try working in an office where someone is trying to drill 50 holes into a concrete wall next door.

In comparison, all other noises can be easily ignored.

spacehunt··on CarSized: A way to visualise car dimensions
Unfortunately this site is not useful for me, as it seems there is no way to select my current car, a VW Golf Mk6 5 door.
spacehunt··on Safari blocks gitlab.com because Tencent says it contains misinfo
Unfortunately yes it has, but I don't think Apple should be helping the CCP to speed up the process.
spacehunt··on Safari blocks gitlab.com because Tencent says it contains misinfo
But Hong Kong is still a separate legal jurisdiction, and in this particular case, the "misinformation" law does not apply to Hong Kong.

If what you say is the reason, then why won't Safari block gitlab.com in Macau also?

In short, Apple messed up.

spacehunt··on Ask HN: Best tips for reducing eyestrain while coding with astigmatism?
Agreed, for me also a light theme, with the screen's brightness turned way down (I prefer 10%, sometimes even lower). The room itself should also be neither too bright nor too dark.
spacehunt··on 35% of Japanese people say they’ll ‘never travel’ again
Apologies. It was the only "foreign" / "imported" thing I paid for while in Japan (I was road-tripping around the Fuji Five Lakes which does not have a train network at all.)

Accommodation and food prices seemed to be roughly around the same as before, but I did note some bottled soft drinks seemed to come in smaller sizes than before (450ml vs 500ml).

Checking my notes again just now, I did see the Nest Mini 2nd Gen for ¥2980, but that seems to be part of a Christmas promotion going on, so not a useful data point.

spacehunt··on 35% of Japanese people say they’ll ‘never travel’ again
I just came back from Tokyo. Everything seems cheap right now, especially food, but prices are starting to rise. For example Uniqlo has announced they will raise prices by quite a bit next year.

Imported goods have been adjusted already. Regular unleaded petrol is around 170 yen per litre around Tokyo.

spacehunt··on McDonalds Event Driven Architecture
Is it really scalable? Every time the local McDonald's have some cross-promotion going on with a certain boy band (for example this week's collectable cards), their app's backend always crash right at 11am when the promotion starts.
spacehunt··on Binance to acquire FTX
The seminal HK show about the stock market would be The Greed of Man (大時代) [1]. It's 30 years old, but classic scenes in it are still used in memes even today.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention the "Ting Hai Effect"! [2] Wikipedia has a great summary which I'll just quote here:

> The Ting Hai effect, also known as the Adam Cheng effect, is a stock market phenomenon in which there is a sudden and unexplained drop in the stock market whenever a film or a television series starring Hong Kong actor Adam Cheng is released. It still remains as a popular topic among stock brokers, years after the television drama The Greed of Man was broadcast in Hong Kong in late 1992. The effect is named after Ting Hai, the primary antagonist in the drama, who was portrayed by Cheng.

spacehunt··on Just don’t
"I've worked with similar problems in the past, let me know if you want to pick my brains" would be a much better start. Don't assume people want help, even if it seems crystal clear to you help is needed.
spacehunt··on Apple Execs on iMessage for Android (2013)
Except for Hong Kong, where most people have Whatsapp + at least one of Telegram, Signal, Line, Wechat.
spacehunt··on Low Earth Orbit Visualization
I guess this is US only? The site is horribly broken upon loading. Only after using developer tools I discovered that all scripts and assets return 403 - CloudFront configured to block your country.

Edit: I'm in Hong Kong.

spacehunt··on Wikipedia is not short on cash
NBN has been mutilated to be a so-called "multi technology mix" network that includes laying new copper wires (in 2010s!) instead of fibre.
spacehunt··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
They issued one recall already, so I assumed at least some are in customers' hands?
spacehunt··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
Don't they have the bZ4X? Granted it's only one model, but still it's one more than "doesn't have any EVs".
spacehunt··on Katakana, Hiragana, and Unicode
Another simple technical reason is that that's how JIS did it, and Unicode wants to have lossless round-trip encoding conversions in order to promote its adoption in East Asia at the time.
spacehunt··on Please don't be spooky
Available for what though? Work? Chitchat? The point is that context is important.
spacehunt··on Self-hosted email is the hardest it's ever been, but also the easiest
I recall the original major selling point of Postfix was that it is more secure than sendmail (lots of smaller, easier to reason programs vs. one big monolith.)
spacehunt··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
Of course it would be DDoS-Guard, the same service protecting HKLeaks, a site with the sole purpose of doxxing Hong Kong protesters.
spacehunt··on The Bay Area's lost streetcars
Melbourne is not a great example of a modern fast system though. The trams are far too slow in the inner suburbs, with the exception of parts of 96/119.
